We are recently retired and traveling from Mexico to Argentina in search of our favorite retirement city. Arequipa is high on our list. We are currently in Nicaragua and will be here until February… Then 6 months in Guatemala and 6 months in Mexico. After that we may fly to Colombia to stay in Medellin and Manizales… Cuenca, Ecuador… Arequipa…. Tarija Buenas Aires Bariloche I may have left out a few…. So if you were advising your parents…. Best country/city to retire ? Oh, and we need cool weather ! Thx ! Great video !

You’ve named some pretty amazing places!! We think the best thing to do is exactly what you’re doing: visit each place and spend some time there, then pick the one that works best for you. And don’t forget to look at hidden things like healthcare, immigration requirements, safety, ease of travel, and political stability. Arequipa and Peru are amazing and definitely worth checking out!

This is my plan as well when it's time to retire. I would also include south east asia. My only problem with south east asia is that it's too far from Canada.

I am currently living in the neighborhood of Yanauara Arequipa. One of my favorite cities to live in the 4 years of travel. Great city, Great food, Great people. And yes very cheap. I eat out 7days a week, 3 times a day for around $12.00.

It’s Salinas Lake. We just booked with the hotel when we arrived. You can ask your hotel/host or try one of the tourism vendors by the main square (just check reviews first). It’s a cool lake to visit!

If you have other hobbies and want to spend some time taking in the city, it’s a great place to hang out for a few weeks! Just don’t expect a lot of major attractions, with a new place to visit each day.

Arequipa is also known as "The White City" because of the volcanic rock, sillar, that faces the old buildings. Arequipa has the best produce, beef, and dairy as well! Be sure to visit the Convent downtown, Santa Catalina! The vicunas were almost driven into extinction by the Spanish. Under the Incas, only the aristocracy could use their wool.

Yet another city worth looking into when you're in Peru next time: Cajamarca. It's locate in the north of the country at around 2,000 metres up.

Would Arequipa, Peru be a good city to live longterm as in retirement?. It looks like there is a lot to see and do. The food looks delicious! Can you find rent for $250 on the outskirts of the city, or in the suburbs?. I’m interested in Arequipa! 😊
@ChrisAndEmilie Жыл бұрын
Arequipa is an amazing city and so beautiful with the 3 volcanos surrounding it. It's also very affordable. In terms of retirement, it really depends on what you're looking for. You need to consider the culture, politics, health care, ease of traveling around, and your level of Spanish. If you're thinking about retiring in Arequipa, make sure you spend a few months there first to get a feel for the lifestyle before making any longer-term decisions.

Was altitude sickness a problem?
@ChrisAndEmilie Жыл бұрын
We didn’t experience any altitude sickness in Arequipa or in Cusco, which is quite a bit higher. But everyone is different and we definitely met people who weren’t feeling as good, especially in Cusco. I think one thing that really helped us is taking time to acclimatize, instead of jumping into activities right away, but being able to do that really depends on how long you’re able to stay.

It was awesome that you saw the lovely vicuña. This is the animal depicted in the national seal of Peru and this is the reason why: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqq9nIipjtqjo5o At the end of your video you ate at a Picanteria, a type of restaurant unique to Arequipa and some parts of Peru that predates restaurants that started in the 1800. What’s the difference? It is a country restaurant with more picnic tables where sharing a table is encouraged.
