I love this scene for so many reasons . The biggest reason is it showed how much love Xena had for Ares . Even though a lot of their history was pretty negative Xena ALWAYS had a soft spot for him ! Their relationship gave the show such a interesting dynamic ; a life struggle between who Xena was and who she continued to try to be

Absolutely right ❤️ It's one of the genius things about the show, the balance, the yin yang, the fact that Xena was not "the ultimate good hero" she had her flaws! 🤷‍♀️ She always felt something for him, the way she always reacted to his touch, and the way they had that sort of understanding by the end, she had to keep him at arm length, yes, he was bad for her, but she cared and she did love him ❤️

@@Louellastark of course not, what Xena had for Ares was much more than this, maybe for so long it was right that he didn't take no for an answer, but so many fans always ignore the fact that by the end he did take that "no" and lives with the fact that she's never coming back, and actually when he gave his godhood up by the end of season 5, it was unconditional and he asked for nothing in return! He even said "Xena owes me nothing" when he was a mortal, even when he was back as a god, he realized that he doesn't even want the bad Xena back, he loves the real Xena and he said "you're so good and I wouldn't have it any other way" and that was the best closure ❤️

Xena getting beaten (and almost killed) by Ares is all part of the plan so that the Furies are fooled into appearing. Plus she has a soft spot for Ares. If Xena were actually trying, mortal Ares wouldn't stand a chance. She has even held her own against him when he was a god. We just saw Xena demolish a good chunk of the Greek pantheon in the last episode (Motherhood).

She demolished a good chunk of them because the God of light gave her the ability to hurt them. It was borrowed power. When Ares was introduced in the series (that time he was wearing a black cloak) he was overpowering her and she couldn't keep up with him. The Olympian gods fell because Christianity was introduced in the series, the same way people in Greece stopped believing in them and replaced them with Jesus Christ.

Each of the gods are the god of something different, Aphrodite is the goddess of love, she cannot use her power to harm anyone, but she can make people love to the point they cause harm. There is a goddess of death in this show (Celeste) so maybe she has a say over who lives and dies.

She doesn't love Ares at all? There is literally no evidence. She spends the first four seasons being openly revolted by him: "you make my skin crawl" "i'd rather be dead than join you" etc etc. Her trust in this scene was 100% in Gabrielle and Eve. She didn't kill him because she owed him for saving Gabs and Eve in season five finale. The only time she ever says she feels anything for him is one episode in season five (which is never brought up again) when she was PRETENDING to seduce him, with absolutely no intention to actually ever be with him. She manipulated him all through season five to get what she wanted. He actively corrupts her daughter as he corrupted her and then he pits them against each other - you really think that she loves him!?! That's sick. In this same episode she kisses him goodbye and tells him he will never have a chance with her, even when he's mortal. She constantly is rebuffing him. She hates everything that he is as a god, and views him as a good friend as a mortal.

I think Xena did have some feelings for Ares, but this "love" was probably more lustful in nature (and it may have developed during her evil days). It wasn't the same kind of self-sacrificing love she had for Herc or Gab. I do agree with Rachel that Xena felt indebted to Ares for saving her, Gab, and Eve in the season 5 finale. But for most of the show she despised him for all the things he did to her, despite any attraction she may have had for him. Xena let herself almost die in this scene because it was part of her plan to defeat the Furies. And, as pointed out, she owed Ares for saving them in the last episode. She did have some feelings for Ares and even some compassion. But I'm not sure if those feelings were the driving force for what she did here. At the end of this episode, Xena says "You always got to me Ares, but you were bad for me." This is evidence that Xena always had at least some attraction for Ares, but she knew better than to act on it. Xenalovesares makes a good point.
