Cissy Houston's high notes in the background accentuate every aspect of this song. The energy is absolutely beautiful … her sister's words, her vocals and Cissy's Soprano. I love this, my favorite of all songs... I would have loved to have been in the studio at this time, with them, just wow!!

Yes, this is my favorite of favorite songs of Aretha's. Cissy in the background is just magical. What an arrangement. I get goose bumps listening each time. Honored to have seen Aretha in '72 in NYC. Beyond thrilling. What a super star she turned out to be all these decades. I miss great Motown music (I know she was signed with Arista, but I include her with that great stable of talent of Berry Gordy).

It is absolutely astonishing what our music has fallen to today. Back when songs were written to pour out the heart to a woman or man so strong that you could fell it in your soul. Hence, soul music. There was one major requirement. You had to be able to blow. A song like this permeates your entire being. You outright feel the passion in her voice and feel the heat as she conveys her need to her man. She is saying, if only you would let me try and can love you like no one else. But, you want give me a chance. Aretha was special. Also, listen to the songs and the words of those who sang back in the day. Once you heard their voices you immediately knew who was sanging (I did not misspell that), because those artist's had very distinctive voices. Examples? Sure: Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Glady Knight, Patti LaBelle, Dion Warwick, Isaac Hayes, Frankie Beverly, Teddy. I could go on and on. Denise Williams, For those of us who were born during the hey day of real music we were and are truly blessed. I thank the Father up above for this gift. Thank you Father!

I've seen Aretha live with unknown background singers and one of them hit that note and brought everybody to their feet. Sounded just like Cissy. The only way you new it wasn't Cissy was because she introduced the background singers at the end of the show. There's more to being a great singer than hitting a high note. Cissy was a one or two hit wonder as a R&B singer and her gospel career wasn't much better. Heck Erma had a better career than Cissy. I like Cissy but she wasn't the star yall making her out to be. She was pretty much a career backup singer.

@jeffrey a +++Thank you for this invaluable post and incites. You lauded the extraordinary contributions by Ms. Franklin and Mr. Charles. However, you failed to cite the pivotal role championed by Mr. Sam Cooke (1931-1964) in shaping “Soul” music. Originally from the south, Cooke's family emigrated to the musical promise land of Chicago as a youth. He wound up leading the Soul Stirrers, introducing gospel music to a wide group of young listeners. He was a sought-after object of girls rushing stages just to get glimpses of his matinee idol good looks, show-stopping mass appeal and abilities as a smooth crooner. During a tragically brief life he had a long run of charismatic recordings that hit U.S charts, paving the way for artists e.g., Aretha, Bobby Womack, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Billy Preston. He bolstered the work of Lou Rawls, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave and James Brown. He started his own record label. And later a publishing firm. A prolific composer, writing many of his own hits, it'd be monumental oversight to not acknowledge Mr. Cooke as a principal innovator behind the emergence of this 20th century musical genre.
