You guys really don’t know who Aretha Franklin is?? She is more than a musician, she fought along side with Martin Luther king jr during civil rights. Just thinking about the things she’s done gives me goosebumps.

This was the Kennedy Centre Awards back in 2015. At the start of the clip, an actress playing songwriter Carole King in the Broadway musical gives you some background on how Carole’s career writing some legendary (and still famous!) hits began in New York. That song, You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman, was released in 1967, when Carole had dark curly hair. Today’s real Carole is the one receiving the award in the rainbow coloured medal ribbons. The original singer of the song is Aretha Franklin, who sang it when it became a worldwide smash hit in 1967. By the 2010s, Aretha had almost retired from performing - so that’s why Carole, watching in the balcony, was so emotional when her friend of 50+ years came out of retirement to perform at the awards ceremony honouring her. Oh and Aretha sang at Obama’s inauguration too! Hope that helps!

WTF, this reaction video is symbolic of the demise of American culture, people getting more ignorant minute by minute, video clip by video clip. The song was written by Carol King and there was something personal to the reason why it was given to Aretha (something to do with a late husband I think) . And as for Aretha, the most famous soul singer possibly of all time, and in her 70's (I think), a smoker and still able to school the youths + playing piano which is very rare for her.

Why it's so emotional: the KC Honors are the American equivalent of being knighted. Carol King (and George Lucas, the guy standing next to King, and others) were being honored (the rainbow-like ribbons around their necks). King was the songwriter and performer. Her Tapestry album ranks at #25 on Rolling Stone best albums of all time. Franklin's performance is the G.O.A.T. showing up to honor King. Franklin was in her 70's and in ill health. With her first strong note, King, Obama and the audience realize that she's still got it, but that this is possibly the last time they'll hear her perform.

okay I know you guys know who Aretha is and I'm sure the song is inescapable, everyones heard this song before even if they don't 'know' it. the lady with the curly hair in the balcony is named Carole King, she was an incredibly influential songwriter from the 60's on, she wrote this song for Aretha who made it famous. I can understand how confusing this is to a straight couple, especially since the young woman on stage in the opening of the video was an actor from the broadway musical of Carole Kings life, so that lady was playing young Carole King as she introduced Aretha to sing a song that the real Carole King wrote, and she's singing it to her live, hence the tribute. I hope my explanation isn't too confusing but this truly was a historic pop culture moment which is why emotions ran so high.
