Ty Guys, The reason Carole King lost her composure was Aretha had been quite ill before this performance and had not performed in a while and to see her come out and to sing Carole's song was awesome, hence President Obama tearing up. The Kennedy Centre Honours is a very big deal and to be inducted into it is a great achievement and this night Carole was inducted and what a way to end it. Sadly this I think was one of Areatha's few final performances as she passed not too long after this and the world lost one amazingly graceful and stunning performers Our Queen of Soul RIP Aretha. Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘❤❤🎵🎵🎶🎶🎵🎵

As far as Carole King goes, she had one of the greatest selling albums of all time with TAPESTRY released in 1971. Every song on that album is a delight. If you can find it, there is a live video of her with James Taylor singing YOU'VE GOT A FRIEND, a song that she wrote to James after hearing his hit FIRE AND RAIN about the suicide of a close friend.

An Aretha hallmark also is, she was the sole support for her boys by performing and she wasn't fond on banks, so she demanded back in the day that she be paid in cash, and the cash went in her handbag and the handbag went to the stage with her, because it was payroll for her crew and family. So almost anytime you see Aretha in a public performance like that, the handbag is there, just as it was here! Carole wrote this song for Aretha and also had a big hit with it herself.

A pure good emotional reaction. I often tear up watching this performance (and I'm not a woman) . This may be in other comments so I may be redundant. Carole King was asked to write a song specifically for Aretha Franklin and this is what she came up with. She also recorded her own excellent version of it on her own album. I think Carole was initially surprised because Aretha didn't perform on piano regularly. She set the perfect gospel feel with her playing.

It is a 100% guarantee that you know MANY Carole King songs. Over 400 of her songs have been recorded by over 1000 artists. Not a "great" singer, but as a composer, she is in a class by herself. Tapestry, her 1971 LP release, is lauded by many in the industry as one of the all time best compilations ever. Each song is fantastic, some are masterpieces. Do yourselves a favor and enjoy the whole album.

May I recommend another legendary performance from Aretha Franklin? At the 1998 Grammy Awards, opera singer Luciano Pavarotti was scheduled to sing the aria "Nessun Dorma" but had to bow out at the last minute due to illness. The show had literally already started and they were quickly approaching the time when he had been scheduled to sing. They asked Aretha to step in and she agreed (she had sung the aria before) and this was the result: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWSWpHyEn9NspZIsi=6RYpwGhjjzjn4FDq
