jf17 is a budget friendly 5th gen aircraft with countless upgrades . you can buy this or spend 5x - 10x more $$ on the next best alternative, all to acheive the same goals . its much sensible to buy this for developing counties. this is why a bunch of other countries also use these rather than wasting $$ on western built jets

Probably 80% as good as a 20 year old F-16, for about half the price. Not necessarily a bad tradeoff, as great fighters you can't afford to buy enough of aren't as good as "good enough" fighters you can buy in quantity. Even if only buying a single squadron's worth.

@pm No, not really. Not as capable as a 20 year old F-16 airframe that has been maintained well, much less current blocks. Pakistan isn't using them to replace their F-16s, they're using them to replace their obsolescence Mirages, Chinese copies of the MiG-21 and a Chinese derivative of the MiG-19. The JF-17 also has the advantage (to Pakistan) of not being subject to use limits imposed contractually by the US on how they can utilize their F-16s. But it is no where near "better than" the F-16. It *compliments* the F-16, doing *almost* as good as the older F-16s, but at half the cost. That's a good tradefoff for a country like Pakistan (or Argentina) to make, but it is still a tradeoff of capability versus cost.

JF-17 is best when it comes to Bang for the Buck. No other aircraft gives long-range Air to air missiles and Supersonic Antiship missiles for this Price. Plus it has a reduced radar crosssection due to its advanced design unlike other jets flying in Argentina's neighbourhood.

@linkzable All US f16s are getting updated and this includes new apg-83 easa radar. All new orders for f16s since 2007 include the new apg-80 easa radar. So yes, the f16 has modern radar.

@@hydorah Yes knowing the capabilities of their aircraft and its backdoors would of been very useful. There is also the fact that Argentina has a right to defend herself. Demoralising and humiliating a former enemy can be as dangerous as being too relaxed and letting her re-arm. For clarification I think we have been very reasonable with the Argentines and the Argentine government is mostly responsible for any tension, but its still important to see it from your adversaries perspective.

The SU30 is believed to have been shot down by an F16 (According to PAF denied by IAF) and a Indian SAR helicopter was shot down by panicky IAF SAM operators. I like the JF17 but I am not going to make stuff up for it. The JF17 is combat proven by the CAS missions it runs.

To the looks of it Argentina isn't planning on integrating the jf 17 (or any other new jet fight aircraft) properly for another 7-10 years as the argentine air force announced that there rebuilding the fleet of a4Ars to 12 combat airframes and once that number is met to 18 combat airframes over the next 1-1.5 years The way I look at it Argentina only really wants a plane to counter Chilean early f16s as the a4s has good capabilities over most other countries that share a land border with Argentina (Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay as well as Chilean air forces f5 tigers and c101 jets ) and since argentine isn't in a hurry to go to war with Chile or UK or brazil neither are they in a hurry to get the jf 17

This is EXACTLY what led to Pakistan developing the JF-17, they paid the US for 28 F-16s; the US took the money, sanctioned Pakistan and charged Pakistan rent for storing the F-16s …. Thus Pakistan began the JF-17 programme with China, after Pakistan, Myanmar & Nigeria … Argentina will be the 4th user with Malaysia and Azerbaijan also considering purchasing it.

@@lawrenceweston922 First off, the US delivered the majority of the contracted aircraft. Second, part of the contract was that Pakistan was to suspend any attempts to acquire nuclear weapons. They did anyway, hence the arms embargo and the cancellation of the rest of the contract. Not sure exactly what Pakistan thought was going to happen.

The UK arms embargo means Argentina could not get ejection seats for many jet fighters from South Korea, Sweden and France. Their only option are JF-17.

I'm surprised that none of those nations were willing to just make a revised version using non-British ejection seats. For that matter it's also surprising that the US hasn't sold them F-16s, which uses the entirely American Collins Aerospace ACES II rather than a Martin-Baker ejection seat. Sure, that might piss off the Brits, but it's better for US interests than having Argentina move into the Chinese orbit.

@@helloworld.w6075 Well, Its upto them. I am more then sure JF-17 will be their selection as it has least British influence. Secondly, Azerbaijan, Iraq are very likely JF-17 future operators. Problem is PAC has only 18 - 20 aircraft development capacity / year. There is already order of 50 JF-17 Block IIIs for PAF. As a pakistani, I want PAF to get these first. Rest of the orders can wait. Also heard there will be follow up order by Nigerian and Myanmay airforces. Malaysia could also select but their requirements are Fighter / Trainer (LIFT) whereas JF-17 is primarily a LCA (Combat aircraft) with dual seat option available as trainer / fighter variant.

Convergent design, the JF-17 is a result of the Super 7 program to get an aircraft to replace the A-5C Fantan, Mirage and J-7 in Pakistani service. Of course Pakistan at the time also operated the F-16 so there are some control and design inspirations.

@@FirstDagger Mikoyan was a consultant to this project. If you look up the Project 33 design you'll see a very similar looking aircraft in many respects, only with a chin intake like an F-16. Basically if you put those aero surfaces on the Grumman Super 7 you'll be 99% of the way to having this aircraft. The Super 7/Project Sabre II was an earlier developmental stage of the program that ultimately created the JF-17/FC-1.

But why not buy j-10c, its better bang for the buck than jf-17 blk3. Even pakistanis are going for j-10c after using jf-17 for years. Chinese can integrate western origin weapons in j-10c if asked, they integrated brazilian arm missile with jf-17 on pakistani request. Both fighters are single engine with similar operating cost. Pound for pound j-10c is a SUPERIOR fighter than jf-17 blk3 in every aspect. Unless some undertable 'gifts' are given to Argentinian politicians i don't see how jf-17 blk3 can win this deal over j-10c

JF 17 Thunder Block 3 is a 4.5 Generation Aircraft. And, Pakistan & China have Developed it to fight French made Indian Rafale and other modern Aircrafts. And, it can carry World's longest rage BVR Missiles, Supersonic Cruise Missiles, and many more Weapons. And, it's a cheap Fighter Jet. Pakistan and China have also equiped JF 17 Thunder Block 3 with some features of 5th Generation Aircrafts. And, it is easy to maintain, easy to upgrade and it's Maintainence is cheaper than other Aircrafts of it's category.

Its no longer the Cold War. Nations can and do purchase defense products from countries without becoming vassal states. The only reason they do is that they are ideologically aligned and/or are receiving subsidies (like the Americans often do). Since Argentina isn't strategically important, no offers were probably forthcoming therefore the lack of tenders from the usual suspects.

Not surprising as they have limited number of choices. My speculation is that JF17 will be more expensive and intensive to maintain compared to other single engine fighters. This is mainly due to the engine used as it has lesser MTBF conpared to Mig29 engine and need more maintenance. Malaysia retired their Mig29 at half the lifespan of the airframes.

Malaysia had issues with spare parts. I think this deal includes infrastructure and spares as part of the deal. The MBTF is lower with the RD93 but I doubt the Argentine airforce will blow through the flight hours quickly in the short term.

The British will want to convince Pakistan not to sell some A2G weapons which are integrated with Pakistani Thunders, like the H2/H4 SOW munitions, Ra’ad ALCM etc. Those would be a problem, while even AESA equipped, BVR capable aircraft won’t change the balance, the former will.

If Britain can afford to fuel them and have them on practiced stand by (How lazy the military has become compared to cold war era) then the JF17 is no match. @@Rich77UK Ironically the UK was for all intents going to hand over the islands gradually in the 80s. If Argentina had waited they might gotten their wish. However the Junta miscalculated and were worried about civil unrest at home invaded. Once blood was spilled over the islands there is no way Argentina is getting anything.

JF 17 was developed jointly by the two countries, the avionics, radar, and other stuff comes from china, engine from russia, while the airframe is built and the planes are assembled in pakistan. Pakistan has 58% production share of the jet. The jet was designed to be used by Pakistan and for export. Chinese don't use it or produce it. Although they are responsible for most of the development of newer blocks.

I found this extremely unlikely, not because of the quality of the plane, but due to the incapacity of the Argentine government to generate any income, even less generating credible debt to afford the planes for at least a couple more decades. My guess is this is a smoke curtain from the government to pretend to solve the issue and then kick the decision to the next government and so on.

The mig21 was shot down by a F16 and the alleged SU30 shoot down was by Amraam. Proof of f16 shot is also gives by Pakistan , as they said that their ground forces have recovered two pilots , one was of mig21 and other was of f16. But to save Pakistan from international shame its army made a make up story . That f16 was not used That's why half Pakistan believe jf17 shot mig21 and half believe f16 shot mig21 .

While one-on-one I've every confidence they're more than a match for these "Thunders", it's suddenly gonna be 14 to 4, and there's no guarantee the Argies will stop at those 14. Its a complicated case where political pressure reduces the choices of aircraft the FAA and the government could afford, the fact that the budget is given with the name of the JF-17 (it usually is just a generic name like "supersonic multirole aircraft") says something, although the last contact between the FAA and CATIC was made last year(?). In the end well have to see if this budget is approved an executed, thing that could happen, but its mostly unlikely. And regarding the A-4s, they are not grounded !

@@1IbramGaunt Its true, specially when considering the AR is not just a common A4, a lot of components were made specifically for it, and are not made anymore. We'll have to see if they go on with the JF-17..or if they just keep waiting.

Argentina has always the option on the table of legacy F-16, Mirages 2000 or even Mig-29/35 as well but in the same way the cur left gov only accepted chinese vaxs ( yes you read right at least until was very late for many people ) they will do the same with any arms deal. But not be confused, all budgets since 2010 included money for new supersonic jets but politicians always found a way to avoid any purchase and in any case I doubt the planes come with any advanced weapons

The UK probably will block the sale of the MB ejection seat and as far as I can tell the JF-17 has never been sold with a different one so it will most likely be redesigned to take a different seat. It will cost to do that but I expect the Argentinians will be willing to accept that to get the aircraft. It depends how much of the MB seat was integral to the design. It might just be plug and play in which case they might be able to get a Russian seat to do the job without too much difficulty.

@@chaljhota420 Block 3 has MAWS, AESA Radar, Increased Composites, Better thrust, Cockpit Upgrades, HMD, HUD upgrades, HOBS missiles, better EW sensors, more secure Datalinks, ECM among a lot of other updates. It is a beast in a small jet.
