Lots of people use Mausers here in Argentina to hunt with either surplus ammo, Norma or reloads. Those cavalry models are not cheap and pretty hard to find

My first deer rifle was a Cavalry Carbine. I paid $75.00 for it at a feed and seed store in my home town and tracked down some JSP ammo for it at hardware store elsewhere in town. "The Little Mule" as it is/was also known in some circles (and still is today) was very accurate and served my purposes from the mid 1960s to about 1971 when I traded it for a new Winchester '94 in .30-30 not because I liked the .30-30 more than the Mauser's chambering but because it became almost impossible in those pre internet days to find hunting ammo for it. I especially enjoyed this video because of the fond memories I have maintained for that fine little carbine! Keep up the great work you do!

I love the 1916 Calvary carbine I have from Argentina. It's in 7X57 and the gun just brings it sadly I have to RE-barrel. But none the less a cool piece of history that I was immediately attracted to and knew what it was before I knew what it was.

Sorry to contradict you, James, but 7x57 NEVER was used by our (Argentine) Armed Services. Ours is the 7,65x53 which is magnificent caliber, even Winchester built their Mod 70 in our caliber Unluckily it was not vey popular. Belgium did use it, so did Iran, Peru and Bolivia and some other South American Countries. 7x57 I believe was used by Chile, they had very good Steyr Mausers

Guys, thou art awesometh . That thing was handled by conscripts for forty nine years ('58 is when Argentina adopted the F.A.L.) and even longer than that, federal police was still using them into the seventies, and is possible to think those kids weren't always careful with them rifles. 1400 meters was for plunging fire, like trench to trench or charging cavalry, it wasn't wishful thinking, but a military doctrine adopted by many militaries around the world. Love the sabre, the infantry rifle came along with an impressive bayonet to. Guys keep those milsurp videos coming. Love to see a review of the carb and the full size one side by side. Many years ago. (1972) while home on medical leave I found a few small country stores that were going out of business. Back then if you had a milsurp we were limited to NORMA ammo for 7.65, 6.5 Italian or Swede, 7.5 Swiss, 303 British or 7.62 x 53R. All loaded with soft points for hunting. Having a couple of years of back pay, I bought every box of Norma ammo I could find. A long with a few mil-surps and a few Win M-70's NIB.

If you think the Cavalry carabine mod 1909 kicks, you have to test the 1891 model. She has a shorter barrel, 18 inch, it shoots magnificently but she was nicknamed the "mulita" or little mule. Was my first ever big bore rifle which I sold some years ago. I had mount a Mauser peep sight and was obtaining 1,5 in groups at 150 meters. I was training in those times (1980s ) and we had good ammo. The problem with our service rifles was obtaining consistent ammo. I just bough anothe mulita a couple of months ago, just for the sake of having sux a sexy weapon. The caliber can be compared with the 30.06 favourably. We have resorted to reloading nowadays feeling grateful that America is selling .312 and .311 bullets for the British .303 Magnificent job. I was delighted to see you firing one of ours guns!!!

Non scrubbed crest on the 1909's are pretty common and they were also left in the white from the factory. The 1891's are hard er to find with the crest. Wonderful rifles! Great video!

I’ve got a Modelo 1913, rebarreled in ‘61 to 7.62Nato M1A barrel. It holds 2&3/4” pattern @ 300yds on a 10shot group. Bought it for 150ish

Estimados colegas: mi humilde experiencia dice que es posible que no estén pegando por el caño encobrado ( lo que hace que disperse mucho) también si es que hace poco que lo tienen deberían revisar la boca del cañón que no esté afectada por alguna pequeña deformación por algún golpe; ya que aquí no se los cuidaba mucho. Terrific video! I believe Norma still offers a load in 7.65 soft points in 180 grains, you can find those down here in Argentina (no cheap stuff though)

Now that was a great vid. Absolutely my favorite when You and Chad blow the dust off an old and very cool rifle made right after the dinosaurs went extinct and just blast away. What an beautiful and classic rifle. Can’t beat those German/Argentine rifles. The 1891 was one of my favorite videos too. That 1909 is definitely on my “must have” list. Thanks again guys.

The theory is sound. As the barrel heats it expands. Touching almost anywhere differently the barrel can be sprung up, down, left, right or a combination there of. Indeed the barrel also gets longer and Mauser cut stock reliefs in the rifles with stepped barrels to counter this issue.

I love the Milsurp .I have one Mauser which is the 1891 Argentine.I found it in a local pawn shop.I guessed it to be from an estate sale. Every number was maching.The only thing gone was the ramrod. Even had a sling . I got it with a two gun buy.Ended up with about $ 150 in it. Love the Mauser,.My next to collect is the Mosin,I hope.. I do appreciate all your videos Eric & Chad. These and the Engineer's carbines were really closer to short rifles vs carbines especially when you compare the 1891 carbine with the 1909 carbine.. Calling these 1909 carbines "stumpy" is kind of silly. Got to love the Argentine 1891/1909 battle rifles and carbines. Kind of a late response from me. Better late than never 😀 The scrubbed receivers were more likely with the 18991 battle rifles and occasionally an 1891 carbine.. It is rare to find a 1909 battle rifle or carbine without a crest unless they were a Peruvian variant. Speaking of the variations around countries with Mausers, this 1909 Cavalry carbine had a ton of variations within it's model unlike any of the other Argentine rifles. For sure very collectible. The Ejercito's are my favorites.

It's a shame that you can only get 7.65mm Mauser ammo from one manufacturer. FM Beltran in Argentina used to manufacture the cartridge, mostly because there're a lot of Argie Mauser in civilian hands in-country. I dunno if they ever exported ammunition to US. I do know that the old weapons plant in Rosario (FM FMAP or FM Domingo Matheu) used to export semiauto only metric-pattern FAL rifle to US, either fully assembled rifles, or just receivers (they were even ATF aproved), misc parts. Fun trivia: argentine gun enthusiasts nickname the argentine Mauser carbines (either 1891 and 1909) Mauser Mulita, that is literally "Little-mule Mauser", because, in comparison with the fullsize infantry rifle, it kicks like a mule, probably not as much as, let's say, a M44 Mosin-Nagant.

I've got an all matching argentine 1909 infantry rifle that's practically immaculate. Even has fire bluing on it like on the bolt release, screws, and rear sight. Would love to see you shoot one also. Most beautiful mauser i've ever seen/owned.

Seems that ammo is crap. Down here, we used empty 06 brass and run it through a 7.65 sizing die and trim for length. Used .311 bullets for the Lee Enfield and you had a tack driver. Norma used to make great ammo in this caliber.

Cool. I find old Mauser cavalry carbines to be great fun to shoot. Wood shrinks with age. It is possible the nose cap or barrel band is shifting a little with each shot.

When he was bench rest shooting I didn't notice the recoil that mine has. I'm no wimp and actually appreciate heavy recoil because it translates to equal and opposite reaction but at a smaller psi point.

That's a really cool little milsurp and I'm liking that caliber quite a bit. I bet with some dialed in hand loads, you guys could get that elevation variation dialed out a little more and be on the gong 95% of the time. I may have to try to find me one of these little carbines! Speaking of carbines, I wanna see you guys do this very video with a Spanish fr8, my dad had one back in the day and I never got a chance to see what it was capable of. Always loved the look and handiness of that .308 carbine and it had a little recoil to it as well. Would be a neat comparison to this rifle, at least full power carbine wise

I too have a full size 1909 and use PKU ammo. Numbers match, as well as the cleaning rod. Crest is about 30%. Would love to see you do a video on this rifle.

You didn't cover the blueing on the receiver. The way yours sits with blueing on the receiver is not original but was done later in life either in a refurb or by someone after it was surplused. Originally theses came with receivers that were all in the white or no blueing. If I could upload pictures in the comments I would post some of my all original example.

Finally!!! I have this same rifle! I'm having trouble finding ammo for it that's not too heavy tho! What I've found lately is too heavy and keyholes. Even so, I LOVE this rifle it also has an intact crest and I have the bayonet for it too!

I love these... back in the mid 80's, I bought one of a friend of mine for $50. I didn't know any better and I kick myself in the @ss all the time since he had both the rifle and carbine but only opted to buy the carbine. Should of bought both.. Nevertheless they were both in pristine condition, matching numbers w/crest intact and it's original slings to boot. With silky smooth, presise actions, these are amazing examples of Mauser's pre-war quality and craftsmanship.

I paid $40 for my '91 cavalry model including a 50 rd box of surplus ammo back in 1973 . I think Norma still makes ammo for it but is about $80 for a box of 20 .
