Argument for the Lumix S5 or the GH5 in 2024. Or both. Or either. Can you even tell the difference?

Whether it's the Sony FX3. The Panasonic S5IIx. The Fujifilm XH2S. The Canon R5C. Blackmagic. Nikon. Red. Ari. Full frame. Micro four thirds. APSC. C'mon... I'm tired of all the camera choices lately, because in my opinion, they're ALL amazing. I say just grab one, master it, and go tell stories. Contribute something. Share your work. Art heals. I'm using this video to do a comparison, check these "old" cameras to see if they're still plenty enough to make great art in 2024, and also using the video to get a few things off of my chest. Be nicer people. It ain't hard to do that. Respect and empathy, humility and generosity are all good things. Be them. Enjoy the video...

Rock, I had a guy go to town on me today on social media because of a very minor typo (swipe keyboard capitalized a word that shouldn't have been and I was too lazy to fix it). I know you know this, but it bears repeating that the internet is full of insecure, weak people trying desperately to pull everyone down to the level they feel. All of these internet trolls deep down are self-loathing, scared people desperate for validation. Your videos, your experiences are truly unique and bring a valuable viewpoint to KZbin. I've watched your channel grow over the past year to nearly double what I think it was when I started watching. It's not easy to grow a channel around making heavy, personal content in an algorithm that's tuned for selling products. That should tell you that those of us that are here are real people really invested in your work.

First of all, thank you so much for the kind words, that means a lot to me, and I really appreciate it, and I don’t take it for granted. And I’m always gonna stay true to myself, and post whatever I feel like posting. If the algorithm wants to reward me, awesome. If not, I’m really enjoying sharing, and I appreciate all of the support. as far as what you just experienced, unbelievable that the capital letter police showed up because clearly they need to take up some kind of hobby like bowling, or watching leaves blow in the wind. I agree with you, these are people who are sitting at home doing nothing, hating their lives, hating the world, they’re generally just miserable, insecure people. And so as far as I’m concerned, I’m just gonna keep posting genuine, heartfelt content, and maybe that will make their hearts swell a little bit, and have their empathy grow a little bit. And who knows? Maybe it will inspire them to actually do something themselves. Maybe make some art. Maybe help somebody else and make some kind of contribution to the world. You never know. People focused on a capital letter risk missing something that might actually change their lives for the better. All you can do is keep trying, and just keep being you. Let those people do what they do. Wish them the best. :-) Thanks so much for all the positive energy all the time, I really appreciate it. It goes a long way.

I once came across a comment under one of my videos where this guy basically said that I was too old to be making KZbin videos. His comment had nothing to do with my video. So, I left him a message on his channel telling him that his comment was neither relevant or appreciated. I blocked him. So, if he replied to my message I wouldn't know. Nor do I care. Obviously my content is not for him. No biggie. But, I won't platform such commentary. So, he's gone. I don't even remember his name anymore. As I've said before, your channel is one of the best channels on KZbin. Period. In fact, your channel is my favorite to date. Your honesty and forthright approach to communicating what is important to you is a breath of fresh air, and much needed these days. As far as the S5 and GH5 used in this video goes, I could not tell which one was which. Both the S5 and GH5 are fantastic cameras. And I loved the music you chose for this video. It was perfect. Now, I'm finally going to watch your film, "The Center of Distance". Take care. And thanks again for your content. Your channel is a hidden gem that is no longer hidden. Cheers.

wow. What an asshole. Is Roger Deakins too old to make films? I'm actually posting something tomorrow that is relevant to what you just went thru. and yes, best to just get rid of him. That is the dumbest comment ever. And yes, the GH5 is am awesome pairing with my s5, I'm glad I found it, and so cheap. Crazy. Anyway... thanks so much for the kind words, it means a lot to me, I will continue to be me, that's for sure. ;) Can't wait to hear what you think of TCoD, my smartphone film. I knew nothing when I made it, but I love it so much. Hope y0u enjoy!!! Thanks again, to be continued....

@@RockWILK I just finished watching "The Center of Distance". I have to say that I needed to see this. I mean that with all of my heart. What an amazing story. I can't tell you how honored and grateful I am that I saw this movie. I related to your story on many levels. I, too, learned things about my life many years later, and some of it less than a year ago, that I feel had I knew these things sooner I would have had a different experience. A different life. I don't say this to blame anyone or hold anything against the people in my story. But, that it's important, that information about our lives should not be kept from us. I don't really believe in destiny or fate. But, I do know, that seeing "The Center of Distance" was an important experience for me to have. I cannot thank you enough for sharing your life and pain and love with us. I will be forever grateful for having seen your movie. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

@@AllThingsFilm1 oh man, I really appreciate this. I was just talking to a close friend of mine about how powerful art can be if you’re willing to really open up the window to your soul and share your deepest truth. I know what it feels like to receive that kind of work, and I work very hard to create that kind of art as well. At least that’s always my intention. I really appreciate this a lot, and I’m glad that you got something from it. I’m also glad that you took the time to actually watch. :-) In any case, I’m sure being an artist yourself has helped you along the way of your journey, I think it helps all of us. thanks again, and onward we go!

I think in terms of capabilities the S5 is only necessary when you want to shoot in low light, otherwise the GH5 can get it done for anyone. Cheers friend! Ps - awesome lighting and composition in your interview . looking strong man.

In my mind (and it's been the case for about a decade now) the best way to tell a difference is by using different lenses. Some lenses are just special on some sensor sizes, and some lenses are shit. Apples to apples comparisons between different sensor sizes never impressed me, the difference is usually in post processing, colour grading etc., not in the equipment itself. The camera that can take the best advantage of a lens you really like the look of - that's the one to go for in 2024, or any other year.

HeyRock. I don't usually comment on KZbin. But i just wanted to say how much i can relate to what to said during your video. Your work is very inspiring and i enjoy learning from creators like yourself. The IQ from the both cameras was and is exceptional in my humble opinion. I also own a gh5 and an S5 and i find they work beautifully together in the right hands. Greatings from Ireland man. God bless you.

Thanks so much for the kind words all around, I greatly appreciate that and I don’t take it for granted. And aren’t those great cameras? I definitely mainly use the S5, but I actually have so much fun using the GH5 because I can put these tiny little lenses on it, and just run around and feel really free with my work. But for me, the S5 is absolute magic. Thanks again, I really appreciate it, and have a beautiful day.

@@35raysmith thanks for that high compliment, honesty is everything in art, and life in general. And yes to the GH5. At first I thought it would be sitting on a shelf ready to step in only if anything might happen to my S5, but the more I mess with it, the more I see I have a great team now with both, and so I’ll be using it a lot. I’m actually working on a video right now using the GH5 so I’ll post that this week. Thanks again for all the good energy. It goes a long way for me. Have a beautiful day!!

Internet is a sad place to be. Happily, there are a few like you! Oh, and I just bought a GH5 as my first camera. In 2024! I watched so many videos about all the Lumix models that I knew the second angle was shot with the S5 and the front, with the GH5 ... ;) I love the roundness and warmth colour of the GH5 over the S5. Just found your channel by accident, loved this video and what you said. It resonates with me still using the GH5 after 4 years, in fact I sold my GH5 and bought S5, didn't like it. I've bough Sony's etc etc, then realised I loved my GH5, so re-bought it. It's never about the gear, but about the filmmaker and how you feel about the gear you have. That's it. Subbed :)

Thanks so much for coming through, I really appreciate that. I’m in love with my S5, but I’ve been using it for a few years. I have to admit, though, once I started using the GH5, I know that if I bought this camera first, I probably never would have upgraded to anything else. It is a massive Powerful tool. And it’s actually so much fun to use because you can throw these tiny lenses on it and get the same quality that I can get with my S5, so I totally understand how you feel. Anyway, thanks so much for the kind words, I really appreciate that, And keep making great art with that GH5!

I agree, "old" cameras can still do more than I know to do (or have the talent to exploit). I only upgrade cameras when I hit some limit (stabilization, focusing, DOF, ...) . Delete the negative comments, it is ok to disagree, but with respect. I don't want to see it or see it encouraged.

Most cameras are good now. I can see a tech advancement that will make a big difference in future where upgrading would be useful and that is stacked sensors because then movement in the shots becomes much better without rolling shutter but always stay behind a generation and learn the basics first.

Very surprised by the comment you received. Yep, you should've left it up. I'd have loved the opportunity to craft a response. Its's A real test of one's awareness to recognize that such comments from anyone in life are most likely coming from a deep sense of insecurity. Usually the transgressor is looking for an easy target for their negative energy. Consequently the target is usually the most physically or emotionally vulnerable. Since your bare your soul in almost every video, there's a bull's-eye on your back for the disturbed viewer. So...keep moving forward right? 👍

Yup. It’s interesting for me, because when I perform in the theater, bearing my soul is always exactly what is needed for the best experience for both me and the audience. But on KZbin it’s a lot different. :-) But I’m fine with it, although I was definitely pretty annoyed, mainly because, he was really rude, and it made me feel like I was 18 years old, which would not have ended well for him. I think any camera bought in the last 10 or 15 years is probably the perfect tool for almost any job. At least for most people who are not working on a set professionally with an entire crew. But if you’re just doing stuff on your own, pretty much every camera is off the charts amazing. I have to admit, I am enjoying the GH5 much more than I thought I would. And since I got it so inexpensively, I just feel very grateful.
