It was like a feature-length adaptation of an MTV Movie Awards parody sketch we have never seen nor asked for.

I didn't think we would disagree on this one, but I simply loved it (well, for a 7/10). But I can understand the other >75% that were not prepared for what this had (as plot, or action, or music).

I remember being a kid wondering what movies would look like in the future and here we are and they look worse. How does this cost 200 million dollars?
@moviesaredope
@moviesaredope 8 ай бұрын
I can answer that - most places have misreported the budget. This didn't cost $200M to make. Apple acquired it for $200M. That was to pay for the movie, pay off bonuses the cast & crew would have been owed after a theatrical release, and own the streaming right The reality that most places haven't reported is that this was a COVID movie. They filmed the entire thing on 2021 Best of all, Matthew Vaughn agrees. He thinks there was too much CGI landscapes (a requirement of travel restrictions, etc of the time) & said he never wants to do CGI again unless absolutely necessary

I also was falling asleep towards the end of the movie and had no idea how or why we were on an oil tanker, glad to know even you guys who didn't fall asleep didn't know either. This movie had no reason for being 2 hours and twenty minutes! I was a fan of the first Kingman movie, and to certain extent 2 and the King's Man, and the prospect of connecting those to this make me much less interested than I was before. The post credit scene was just confusing, not sure how anybody thought that was a good idea, but with how much $ this didn't make I'm glad it seems that is DOA. I completely echo Devindra's sentiment about being excited for the Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, that looks dope!

30:53 loving the review. In defense of Kingsman, the head explody fireworks weren't because of a rating - Valentine hates the sight of blood. There is blood on that movie - Valentine's death as one example. In this movie, it was a requirement of the PG-13 rating

This movie was significantly worse then I had hoped it would be, and I didn’t have super high hopes. Really enjoyed this discussion.

So many reviews have used the word "stupid" to describe the storytelling. Maybe Apple intended Argylle to be a stupid film? Stupid in a cool exciting way rather than in a stupid so it's hard to watch this nonsense way.

Good breakdown. Everything else I've read and heard about this movie has convinced me to stay away, but your review here is now the cherry on top of that decision. Still, I did have some comments and a question (for anyone reading this who has seen it - maybe they can chime in). I audibly laughed out loud when Devindra brought up If Looks Could Kill. Especially the part when he mentioned "18 year old Richard Grieco". I also remember seeing that movie tons on television as a kid, but it's gotta be more more than 30 years since I've last seen it. I totally forgot that Grieco was supposed to be a high school senior in it. Guy was in his mid 20's when he made it. He's gotta be the most shot looking 18 year old in a film since 28 year old Steve McQueen played one in the original Blob. The other comment that came to mind is that movie sounds like a dumb crossover of Renny Harlin's The Long Kiss Goodnight (it even has Sam Jackson in it) - surprised you didn't mention this in your review - and the now largely forgotten Walter Matthau 1980 spy comedy Hopscotch (which Argylle actually shares more plot similarities with). The latter is actually based on a pretty dark novel by Brian Garfield (author of the original Death Wish novel). Garfield had a hand in the film's script but Matthau wanted to make it more of an overt comedy, supposedly to better suit his strengths as an actor at that point in his career. The question I had however was regarding the plot. So wait, do they actually give any kind of a reason why both the CIA and The Division have allowed Conway to become a famous author? What was the reasoning given there? I'm assuming they allowed it to happen, and they didn't just miss out on it before - only picking up on it now, with the release of her 4th book? Because the latter option would be really imbecilic.

Discovered your channel via this review! In full agreement with you guys. Matthew Vaughn has been in a creative rut for 10 years and he needs to get out of the spy genre. He's become grotesquely overindulgent in his style.

I don't understand what Vaughan was smoking when he decided on Argylle's horrendous haircut, suit cut, and suit fabric. The smoke shootout and makeshift oilskating knifing scenes are great idea… and executed badly. The former is chaotic and the latter is badly performed. Central to these twin debacles are the amateurish movements of Howard's and Rockwell's characters. Her movement looks so bad in the latter scene that I visibly cringed watching it. I say this with genuine disappointment, because I LOVE _The King's Man_ (2021), his previous film.

2024 may be a significant moment in movie history. From what I've read the domestic and international box office has shrunk since covid. Streaming is becoming more and more popular. Maybe 2024 is the year cinema really declines in popularity? It's possible. The dramatic decline in superhero movies must be concerning for the studios. I suppose a few IPs will still make mega bucks. The inevitable Super Mario Bros 2 or Barbie 2 or whatever sequel will make bank and keep cinema going but if most people are happy to wait until theatrical releases are on streaming apps and digital rental I can't see a positive future for big screen entertainment. Why spend 20 dollars to pay to see Argylle (which has been claimed to have some awful green screen cgi) when you can wait around 45 days and see it as part of your Amazon Prime deal or rent it for $6. There's far less incentive to pay to see films at the theater.

Last Action Hero satirised 80s action movies. I think it’s misunderstood like Starship was. Admittedly, McTiernan is no Verhoeven, but I think it deserves a reappraisal.
