I’ve only seen Hereditary, Midsommar, Beau is Afraid, and Strange Thing about the Johnsons, but my conclusion is that Ari Aster’s goal is to create scenarios where it would literally be better to be dead than still in that scenario. Each film has its own tone and way of getting to that point, but let’s just say he’s VERY into family-based trauma.

Ari Aster is a genius. I'm not even that much of a movie fan, but I find myself hanging on his every word and wanting to watch all the films he references. I think it takes great strength and courage to face the horrific parts of life. In that way, it's very life-affirming to watch a horror film, because it's like you're accepting a dare to look and not flinch.

What I love about that dinner scene is Annie's complaint of no one taking any responsibility applying to her directly. She speaks about her life and history as if it belongs to someone else. She is always distanced, even in her approach to miniatures.

Wow! The Baby of Macon’s play on pageantry, theatre, and audience complicity in watching/participating in the horror is also present in Midsommar. I had no idea that it was not available in the USA. In have also watched those Iconic films discussed, plus I recommend Blue Velvet, and The Innocents (adaptation of The Turn Of The Screw).

Wow, so interesting to hear about Aster's childhood shared cinema experiences with his mother, to which I can relate incredibly hard! Truly, I was exposed to the in-depth classics of cinema from a very early age by my late mother, including silent b&w films, Dr. Kaligari, all that jazz, and on the regular basis, too! (I guess the second blessing was an immortal "Museum of Cinema" in our homecity). My all-time favorite childhood film was Kurosawa's "Kagemusha" when I was 10! (And I saw it at least a dozen times on a large screen).

And then cut to ellen being pushed away from having any contact with peter the first born son of annie and when charlie is born cut to next scence where ellen is breast feeding her grandchild charlie cut scene zooming out of baby closeup sucking nipple as ellen slowly looks up to camera with an evil grin then black screen with director name.

Ari's movies really makes me carry that mood like a dark cloud over my head long after the movie is over, it feels like an amped up version of real life, he makes the kind of heavy lifting horror no one makes anymore (The Exorcist) ... just stop the James Wan factory churn outs already .. ... more Ari please

Horror movies or any darker movies are fun to watch if they are well made but for me the movie need to have something which makes it strong. For example The Lord Of The Rings movies have strong emphasize on evil and darkness and even Harry Potter movies feeds by strong dark characters. But there is Light behind which fights darkness and win at the end. Ari Aster movies are no doubt well crafted and he is one of those filmmakers like Ryan Murphy who is capable to make A lister movie like Eat Pray Love and at the same time darkest horror but so artistically well made that makes horror movies as popular as any commercial romantic comedy with A liste actors and high budget. I remember when horror movies were somehow at the background they did not make high earnings like typical A movies like Godfather for example with rare exceptions like Shinning, Silence of The Lambs, The Exorcist.. But lately horror movies are so well made that they are no more typically in the background and it is already perfectly normal for filmmakers to make movies with high budget like those made by Disney company and then same filmmaker made successful horror movie ! Ari Aster is one of those who can make well crafted horror movie who could even win academy awards no doubt ! SO I am praising him very much be aware of that ! But still I dont like his horror movies cause they are weak and depressing, Not weak in terms of being badly made, no they are very well made, remember I am praising his skills ! His horror movies are weak cause they are lacking strong positive character someone who can confront the darkness and win over it, no matter how dark, gory and disturbing the movie is ! His movies are lacking the Light, The Divine presence, this is very weak. So in his horror movies darkness, evil, mental disease win at the end. Its just my personal taste, I dont like the movies where darkness win at the end. HIs movie for example Midsommar is so good movie, no doubt, mental issues and emotional dramas are artistically crafted ( I like to use that word "crafted" ) but evil, darkness and hatred and mental disease not just win at the end but is even stronger. His movies have no positive solution, no way out. I feel like in twillight Zone but the one without end, without exit ! Creepy, dark and very nightmarish indeed ! One of those horror movies that was made with ridiculously low budget of something like 10k dollars but is earning more than 50 milion dollars after third part The Terrifier is similar, darkness always win no matter what. Like thos Friday the 13th movies, no light, no Divine presence of goddness no God ! And presence in Ari Ater movies are similar, just pure darkness. I call such movies depressing and weak no matter how well made. I just like that positive, good win I hope Ari Aster will change that in the future and become more optimistic and make movies with more positive end.

I think "HEREDITARY" is nothing but 3:17m short of a master-piece ! Why 3:17 minutes, you ask ? That's the lenght of "CLOUDS" as sung by Judy Collins, that closes this otherwise perfect movie - much of which (or witch) rests on the very competent shoulders of Toni Collette ; over and over in my head (which I haven't lost yet, no thanks to the movie), I've tried to make sense of the insertion of that otherwise beautiful song at the very end of that beautifully-dreadful movie... but to no avail ; let's say it's what the director wanted and that's that ! But still, I think he should've listened to Joni Mitchell's "CLOUDS" before making his final choice ; Judy Collins' 1967 cover sounds muffled and dusty, while Mitchell's (original) version, re-released in 1969 on REPRISE records, sounds crisp and truly stereo, as if recorded recently ; now there are songs on that LP that might, I say might, have made more sense for the movie's awkward ending ; for instance "THE FIDDLE AND THE DRUM" ; Mitchell's alluring voice has even chilling "over-tones", as they say, in the business ; but it is the way she plucks at the guitar that draws the most attention ; even the album's cover, a Joni Mitchell self-portrait (yes, she also paints), is premonitious : she somehow looks like Toni Collette... and get this : Joni and Toni (LOL) Is it too late to re-release the movie with Joni's song dubbed on ? Oh, but ask Joni's permission first... I've read she wasn't too keen about Collins' rendition (LOL) !

Simulacrum- In its earliest English uses, simulacrum named something that provided an image or representation (as, for instance, a portrait, marble statue, or wax figure representing a person). Perhaps because a simulacrum, no matter how skillfully done, is not the real thing, the word gained an extended sense emphasizing the superficiality or insubstantiality of a thing.
