Hello Mr. Acker! I wanted to say that when I was browsing Rob Scallon’s channel I found your video. And oddly, you looked familiar! Then it hit me! You played the theorbo at University of Wisconsin Madison in l’incoronazione di Poppea! I was there seeing my sister as Poppea! My dad LOVES baroque and early baroque music and when I got into the theatre he described to me that what you were playing is the theorbo, and during the performance I paid particular attention to you! When I saw you on Robs Scallon’s video I was like, “wow that’s the guy that played theorbo at my sisters opera!” Thought that was a funny story! Your music is beautiful!

I'm not very knowledgeable about opera, so I don't have much of a frame of reference for the music, but this piece on its own was incredibly moving. You get so much expression out of the instrument. It's a great privilege to have people who study how to play these instruments in the most authentic manner possible.

I literally just cried here. What a perfection! What a lovely instrument and melody... I knew the piece, I've heard it been sung... but this interpretation was far beyond heavenly... thank you.
@luisumana14565 жыл бұрын
Something that strikes me when a piece is transcribed for an instrument for which it was not originally composed for, is the relationship beyween the composer and their original idea, the transcriber and their interpretation of the piece, and how it changes in tonality and technicality to best suit the new interperatation. Do they try to keep as much of the original while letting the instrument's voice reflect its own unique character, or do they instead transcribe so that it is the instrument which takes center stage, and the accompanying music is no longer the focus, so much as it is a way to demonstrate what the instrumwnt is capable of? Bach's violin sonatas transcribed for lute come to mind as an example, particularly the first sonata's presto, which is very technically and artistically demanding of the performer, especially to mantain a crisp, full, lush sound amongts the many arpeggios. But when played on the lute, some artists choose to slow the tempo down considerably, probably to allow the strings to virbate longer, and thus allow the delicate tonalities of the lute to take center stage. But with this performance, I think its a middle of the rode approach. The theorbo is allowed to play, and the melody is allowed to thrive, so I thinks its an extraordinarily well made transcription, and a truly lovely rendition of this most famous of baroque arias.

Watching you play and how your body speaks with the instrument is in itself an artwork on top of the music. You play with so much tenderness and love, it's almost as if the instrument is translating it into music.

it isnt practical thats why
@lars73344 жыл бұрын
@@bernardo569 I think it has more to do with the production. It is mosty skilled luthiers making these so they are quite expensive (otherwise I would have one right next to me now). Everyone has a cheap guitar at home because they are mass produced, and that would not be the case if it wasn't for Segovia who spiked the interest in it. It is mainly coincidences that make the 6 string guitar the standard instrument to have. If you're 10 and you're parents have a guitar at home, that is probably the instrument you start playing.

I just love your performance of old melodies on instruments that have become rare nowadays... these are wonderful tools! I'm thrilled... but I have an opinion that you are able not only to repeat the melodies of bygone times, but also to create your own based on classical works... heavy metal and rock do not exclude all this in their content... it is very rare when knowledge and performance of classical music are competently introduced into new music. in Russia, there is such a performance by Kipelov... a rare example.
