Most people seem to find Airplane funnier than the naked gun movies but in my opinion the naked gun movies are clearly funnier and I think the main reason is Leslie Nielsen being the lead role. I think he is the absolute best actor for this kind of comedy. Its a shame he died, he was truly one of a kind!

Between Airplane! (1980) and The Naked Gun (1988), they did six episodes of Police Squad! (1982), a tv series that was the template for the Naked Gun movies. Then, they did Top Secret! (1984) which is a mix between spy movies set during WW2 and Elvis Presley's musicals.

Great movie. The one I most remember. The starting scene with the baby is a spoof on the movie The Untouchables with Kevin Costner . You can also watch Top Secret 1984 from the same directors of The Naked Gun trilogy and Airplane. Fyi the naked gun movies are based on a short lived tv series named "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! " with 6 episodes.

If you liked the "Naked Gun" trilogy, see if you can get a hold of some "Police Squad", the tv show where the movies follow. You'll be glad you did. There are a couple more characters, like Johnny, the shoeshine man, and Al (a super tall officer who's so tall that you can't see his head).

It's great seeing you laugh, Aria. Comedy movies suit you. You might get a kick out of "Old School" with Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson, and Vince Vaughn at their peak. It has some wild physical gags too and for a modern R-rated comedy, it has pretty clever jokes. Another is "Meet the Parents" with Robert DeNiro and Ben Stiller.

The Naked Gun movies were actually based on a TV series called "Police Squad" that ran in the early 1980s. It was a failure, and only ran for six episodes (I think), but they used the same characters for the Naked Gun movies. If you like these, you should check out "Police Squad."
