Thing is, while the language may be evocative from White, Ariels whole angle here is a bit of a reach. Dana is clearly saying that Francis is on the top of the mountain, and wants to leverage that into a major payday in a different sport. Dana doesn't A, think that exists (and there's significant proof to back that), B, doesn't want the optics of his champ getting splattered in a boxing ring and C, wants his champions to defend their titles. If Francis loses his next MMA fight, this fictional boxing payday disappears into ether, that's the 'risk' he doesn't want to take. He doesn't want to blow his shot at a payday, so he's holding out signing a contract that makes him have to fight in a cage. Expressive disbelief that another organisation is throwing money at him while also entertaining this idea is about where I would be. The MMA vs Boxing sideshow is exactly that, and there's a percieved threat to MMA by it. Francis wants to pursue it, and Dana wanted him to fight in a cage. That's all this is. I'm a fan of Heelwani, but this is a reach.

On the part where you're talking about Francis being willing to take risks I'm surprised you didn't mention him walking away from the UFC to find the deal he wanted elsewhere. Remember how a couple of weeks ago there were "experts" lining up to tell everyone that Francis has fumbled the bag because he overvalued himself? And a while before all this, remember how Francis went into the last fight on his contract, as the champ, against the guy who was supposed to usurp him and be the future of the Heighvyweight Division? If he lost that fight he would lose every bit of negotiating leverage he'd built up for years, but if he won he'd have the choice to forge his own path, along with his UFC belt and all the negotiating power he could ever wish for. Well it turns out that Francis is a man who likes betting on himself, and when he does, he wins. I don't know if he has some genius team advising him or whether he just has balls of steel, but it's brilliant watching him take Dana on and beat him over and over at his own game.

Dana made some good points. He said that Francis was NOT scared to fight Jon Jones or anyone else... What Dana means when he says that Francis did not want to take any risks is that Francis looked at this from a business standpoint and realized that he just needs to make it to a boxing match with Tyson Fury for a 20 million to 50 million payday. If he fights Jones and loses, that boxing payday disappears. This is why Francis wants to do boxing before his next fight in the PFL. He isn't afraid, he just wants to minimize risks so he can secure that giant payday before fighting in MMA again.
