Somewhat uninformed question from a MC rookie here: if you get a ton of contamination inside the engine, what is the dynamic that causes engine failure? Love these videos!

Assuming you've got some kind of reasonable airfilter, if not oiled properly, the fine dust particles (silica etc) pass through and form a grinding paste with the petrol / oil. The engine literally polishes itself to death, incurring 2 or 300'000km of wear in 5-minutes.

Keyboard warrior here: Great info on the CR air filter combining air filter oil and 2t oil so it doesn't dry out! Also great stuff with the silicone spray on plastics and rubber. I'm currently in the process of restoring a 1994 YZF 750R and have extensively sprayed all rubber hoses and vacuum lines with silicone spray and it's unreal how soft and compliant it made them after a couple of hours. Definitely going to use it moving forward. Great stuff as always! 🤙

Just keep the Silicon spray off the plastics (as in the cosmetic panels etc) , You will eventually ruin them and strip the coating leaving them looking very faded and dry. I learnt the hard way on two quad bikes thinking I was protecting the plastics only to realise it makes them look good temporarily until it drys again . Never again now just use muck off or similar. Years ago when I told a bike mechanic I used silicon he said that's fine but do it before you sell it and sell it quick, I always wondered what he meant until I eventually figured it out too late.

@@silverdale3207 That is absolutly trut but not many belive me. Silicone spray and ozon (the Sun) olders the plastic in a big and quick way. But like you and I find out....not many belive that. I know for shure, it cost my company a lot of money (mailfunctions on firehose connections) and we let it test by a technical univercity. Silicone on plastics under the influence from Ozon is a kliller, point.

Yep unfortunately the Motul air filter oil is pure crap, basically a glue. other brands air filter oil are much thinner, easier to apply and becomes tacky after the application, works the same if not better - blocking less flow than this heavy sticky compound.

I ve always been nuts by putting silicone on my bike and under the seat, feels good. About airfilters I do same amount of oiling and I will put some extra layers on it, usually some "medicine hats" or sometimes even Twin Air dust cover product. Those uber thin Medicine hats are great, they cost about few pennys each :D I will ziptie the exess fabric right on the center of the filter. Works really well on my KTM, all the flower seeds and and other nature particles will fall off and wont stick on filter. Cheers!

Some more tips for anyone passionate about their bikes: If you're washing bikes regularly, or simply want to do a better job, a cordless blower to get the water out of every nook is a fucking godsend - it's much easier to prevent corrosion, water spotting (on nice street bikes) when you start with less water to disperse with your EZlube/equivelent in places like under clutch lever boots, under your tanks, all those area you see Adam spray etc. Running the bike is great but unless you have pretty clean water you still leave behind a heap of minerals/water spotting - I go around with a cordless blower (I'm talking like an 18V makita/equivelant) while the bike is heating up so it's no extra time. Nothing against Adam's content there is extra nice ways of doing things too for those keen to be more anal in the detail, I still follow up with a water dispersant in places like clutch boots, pivots etc. and SC1 (like a silcone spray with less residue) but venturi/sucking water out with a blower (just like how Adam does his air filter) takes away a heap more water to start off with, especially if you're about to put your bike away for a week or two - nothing worse than putting them away wet. Has to be said not all air filter oils behave the same either, I've switched brands a heap to find one I'm happy with - some are shockers for drying out fast.

That reminds me of a little story when I, about 15 years old, brought my 125 dirt bike to the workshop on my father's construction site so that the boys could check the bike. After a short time, the mechanic, a small Thai guy, came out, pulled my ear, held the totally dirty air filter under my nose and yelled at me if I was serious! Then he took me to the workshop and showed me how to clean the filter in the future! Lesson learned! There was no special filter oil back then. We used regular 2 stroke oil.

Just wanted to add: throw a rag over your brake rotors if you're spraying silicone, or wipe them off with brake cleaner before rotating the wheels. Silicone is very heat resistant and doesn't wash off easily; lubricants can soak into the pores of the brake pad material and they're not going to perform well ever again, and it probably won't burn out of the pads. Awesome video, great practical tips. Thank you

Is this a lube commercial? 🤣Just joking. I've worked in Motorsport and oh boy Adam is right, coat that wires, connectors, and bolts and nuts with WD40 or similar, it might save you from a short or other electrical issues in the future due to oxidation. We used to ship formula cars inside containers to championship most distant events, and the car exposed steel parts would be covered with WD40 to prevent oxide formation. Once delivered you could immediately tell which parts where missed, especially when the car was delivered by sea. There are more durable and specific products out there than WD40 for the job such as ACF-50, but if you do it every now and then WD40 is fine.

So mixing engine oil with the filter oil is not to save money as I initially assumed, though it might do that too, but so the foam stays wet with oil for longer like your 1 year example. Okay. At first you say filter oil is designed to 'stay there' and keep trapping dust which to me means it's designed (by virtue of its tackiness) to stay in place regardless of time and not drip or evaporate away like engine oil alone would. But if even straight filter oil evaporates away, then I'm wondering why engine oil mixed with it does better in that regard, when filter oil should be designed to stay there for long periods. They must know that nearly all riders who don't ride much will not realize this and thereby dust their engines when going for that one ride 6 months after the fall maintenance. At one point it sounded like you were saying that for MX weekend races you can mix it with engine oil, since using 100% filter oil is overkill and $$$$ when you're going to clean it again 2 days from now or after the race. But then I realized you meant that the tacky filter oil is intended for these short periods like an MX race or weekend of riding, and that mixing with engine oil will somehow keep the foam wet with the filter/engine oil mixture longer (even if you oil it and don't run the bike for a year for example). I've done that before due to having multiple bikes and/or life got too busy to ride that one summer. I did what I thought was a spectacularly thorough, careful job oiling it as you do except with only filter oil.......not mixed. Then due to doing it in the fall after buying the bike I won't ride it for many months, or if next summer's as busy building a garage as I think it'll be - maybe not even until fall 2024 so 1 year. Or longer. I'd hate to have to redo the diligent work I just did and reapply $$ filter oil alone or mixed with engine oil when I haven't even ridden the thing ONCE yet. Yet it sounds like filter oil designed for that one sole application i.e. 'they had ONE JOB', is designed for an MX weekend or riding weekend and not for long term use, so you need to go through the trouble of mixing 50-50 with engine oil. This is disturbing news since I've trusted filter oil manufacturers all my life to be selling me oil designed to stay on the foam longer than a week or two - I assumed it wouldn't simply evaporate after even a year or maybe even after a month or two of not riding after oiling it. Perhaps they should give this advise themselves or re-formulate their filter oils if it's better to be diluted with engine oil vs. selling it to us suckers full strength (no I'm not being sarcastic, I'm just frustrated that no matter how hard a guy tries, he still ends up dusting his engine after following their directions). Regardless of that mini-rant I'll consider doing this now for sure but it may just be too late after all these years of apparently dusting my engines using even large amounts of air filter oil.

Adam, I didn't hear you mention about washing your filter with petrol and what happens as a result. 😂

So if my new dirt bike somehow got dirt into the boot and on the throttle valve (still haven’t figured out how because no dry spots on filter and was sealed with grease), does it mean I have to buy an entire new engine?

Everyone jokes about headlight fluid but oiling your air filter is a whole level above that

I use a garden hose to wash my bikes and they always look a bit dirty...and I chuck air filter oil in a plastic bag and do it that way, no mess no fuss....

Could you go over all the gear that you use when riding your motorcycle? I am fairly new to looking for gear and apart from boots and helmets i don't know what to pay attention to.

This guy contradicts himself, uses words he's heard from other people and uses them haphazardly in an attempt to give credence to his theories. For instance he says the oiled filter is 'drowned' he then proceeds to expel most if the oil (as one should)
