Thanks Paul, I’m Bringing my troy Bilt 24 inch blower to my cabin in Vermont and I need a new blower for my primary home in the suburbs of Long Island. I have a asphalt driveway that wraps around the back of my house in front of a two car garage. It’s about 30 feet wide and about 70 feet long. I also usually help out-one or two of my older neighbors driveways and I need something that I can easily make a path in my grass yard for my dog. I’d like to stick to Toro or Ariens if possible. Any suggestions would be appreciated thank you.
@PaulSikkema3 жыл бұрын
If you are happy with the 24 inch width I suggest an Ariens Deluxe 24 or Toro 826 OAHE. The Deluxe has the larger 14 inch impeller for clearing deep snow and throwing it a long ways. The Toro has plenty of capacity, handwarmers and a single joystick chute control.

@@PaulSikkema was looking at both of those. Glad we think alike, thank you.

I have a Deluxe 28 that I purchased new last season (2019) which still has very little time on it (we had a very low snow year last winter). The only issue I had with it was the original Torch brand spark plug. I just couldn't get the motor to start last month while getting it back in service for this winter. The machine was stored inside with the tank empty and carb run dry, so I knew that wasn't the issue. I changed out the Torch spark plug with an NGK (I had as a spare) and she fired right up. Changing the plug is pretty straight forward, just as you described. For any one interested, I used an NGK 7131 BPR6ES plug as the replacement. Thanks again for the great review Paul!
@cardo11113 жыл бұрын
Good points, I had the same issue with mine a few years ago. The LCT factory installed chinese made Torch plug lasted one season, the NGK has performed well for a few seasons 👍🏽

A good vid topic, as always thanks for posting it 👍🏽 Personally I found it performed well under most circumstances, as you said it is a very well-built machine. My peeve with it was on the plow pile it was often underpowered with the 254cc engine. Based on that I ended up selling mine for a very good price and moving to a different Ariens model. Even though the price difference is higher now than it was a few years ago, the dealer only Deluxe 28 SHO model with the 306cc engine and the revised belts and pulleys, is worth the extra money over the Deluxe 28.

This was my 3d winter with this machine, I have the Deluxe 28 SHO, very happy with it. Some people online complain about the auto turn, it does tend to shimmy when going straight when you hit some tough snow as it seems to sense you want to turn but I'd rather have it than not have it. Throws heavy snow very well. Just today I put it away with Sea Foam, shutting the fuel valve to let it run dry then draining the carb bowl, it has a separate bowl drain bolt distinct from the bolt that holds the bowl to the carb.

Nice review, Paul. Very comprehensive and well explained. I run a 2004 Ariens 9.5 HP ( Snow King) 26 inch Deluxe, which is an earlier version of this blower and I can confirm that it will clear itself of slush and ice plugs. Only one in 16 years have I needed to use the tool to clear a blockage. I had until 2 years ago a two car driveway and two city blocks of sidewalks to clear in Syracuse NY ( 120 inches average annual snowfall.) Before that I had an 1980 vintage 8 HP 24 inch DLE. Neither of these have the auto-turn. Both have the one wheel drive differential. They turn easily unless you need to lock the differential. The auto-turn is a great improvement. MY 26DLE has the same tall chute so it throws the snow a long way but it has the old style crank behind the dash. The large tires with the deep tread work well. No chains needed ever. A lot of calcium and salt are used on the roads so we have a lot of corrosion related maintenance as well as the usual fuel issues. Read the owners and service manuals and do the required maintenance and you will be a happy owner. Parts are available for Ariens machines for a long time and many of the wearing parts such as bearings are available from multiple sources. What you say about the balance is very true. My machine weighs 289 lbs dry. In use you are never aware of that. Users may be interested in the optional drift cutter bars and perhaps the nose weight kit. Have you found that you need the nose weight? It really tamed my 26DLE.
@PaulSikkema3 жыл бұрын
I only recommend the nose weight if you are using a snow cab. The Deluxe 28 has enough capacity that it never raises up in the snow like the MTD machines do. If it is raising the front most likely you have a broken shear pin.
@walterbordett20233 жыл бұрын
@@PaulSikkema It raises up from torque reaction as the drive clutch is engaged. Shear pins are good.

I have one of these that I have used for 10 years. I have a large long driveway and live in Minnesota so it gets plenty of use. I’ve owned and operated a wide variety of snow blowers over the past 50 years. Allis Chalmers, simplicity, Gilson, bowlines, Toro, all basically similar size and power. This particular snowblower outperforms them all in every way. The amount of snow it will clear easily, the distance it will throw it, the ease of turning, it is superior in all of those areas. My only complaint and it is a minor one, is that I wish the shoot would turn back just a little bit more than 90°. When I get to the end of my driveway it is difficult to keep it from throwing some of the snow into the street so I just wish I could turn it back a little further.

Hey Paul, thanks for the video and all your reviews. I have the Ariens Deluxe 28 and have used it for 2 seasons now (only 2 times first season but about 10 times in 2020/2021. There are a lot of great features of this snow thrower that give the impression it will last a life time including: Skid shoes (I swapped the cast iron our for Ariens poly skids because of my driveway but both are great), the handle levers are designed better so there is minimal stress on them (I used to have to get my old handle welded back together every few years), The chute crank is super easy to use and always strays in place (my old one always rotated on it own due to vibration and the weight of the crank) and you can adjust the chute tension if it gets loose, the chute deflector design appear to be more water tight then my previous snow thrower (notice how the wire points down not up letting water in to freeze the mechanism) and as you noted the heavy duty spring, larger impeller is great with the cups and the augers do appear to be heavier metal than others, and I was surprised that the tall narrow tires are really better than my shorter wide tires. The machine is super easy to use and the one handed operation seems much better designed than my previous thrower (that broke after about 10 years and could never get fixed). EZ Turn is also super easy and does not really impact traction (occasionally on a grass slope but if you are careful there is no problem). The machine can also ne used on sloped driveways (I would classify my sloped driveways as steep but not super steep). Sounds like I love it but... Changing the spark plug is a pita (you actually have to remove the muffler cover at a minimum) and the standard auto spark plug socket does not fit well/easily (someone recommended I get the stamped socket wrench as it is narrower; I think they are right). The plastic snow clearing tool on the auger housing rattles like a son of a ... (I took it off and leave it in the garage as the machine never clogs). The first gear setting needs to be slower. I modified my machine to make that happen as the standard first gear from factory is too fast and caused the machine to ride up (perhaps the alternative is to pulsate the traction lever but that would drive me crazy; I like to click in and walk behind at a steady pace and direct the snow throw). I throw most of my snow in first gear and move on the open road in 6 gear (it is quick). I rarely use the 2 reverse gears as it is quicker to pull the machine backwards manually. I found the engine very difficult to start but I think I figured out the problem/trick; I turn the choke knob back one click from full choke and it seems to start all the time now). The fuel filter is a terrible design. Mine already has a small tear in it and it makes filling the tank slow and difficult (you think the tank is full but it is not). It would also be great if there were more angle settings on the chute deflector (I often need something in between the notches). My old machine had no notches; deflector stayed where you put the lever. Last major issue that drives me crazy is that the impeller continues to turn (very slightly but definitely moving) even after I have disengaged the auger handle. The suggested fix was to put more slack on the cable but that did not fix the issue. I am convinces there is some adjustment that needs to be made but no one has provided the answer yet (not even Ariens). As well, the electric start module has two hairline cracks in it and I have only used it once. I will bring it back and have it replaced under warranty but that is work on my end and past experience has taught me that getting something minor fixed often leads to subpar fix. (I once requested the zerk fitting be replaced and when I got my new snow thrower back it has a huge scratch and a dent on the auger housing). I will look inside the machine at the end of this season (from below) and I hope I do not find anything scary inside. I saw a video where the guy opened the machine up and the bolts holding the wheel bushings on had broken off on their own (2 sitting in the pan, two snapped as he removed them, and two removed easily enough). Overall opinion... I think my 20 year old Murray Deluxe 28 is a better machine (as good and easier to maintain) but the Ariens Deluxe 28 is very nice, a bit more expensive, but I hope it will last 20+ years (I still use my old Murray as a back up and if there is lots of road salt).

Thank Paul for your quick reply. In fact in the carburator is not 100% empty, there is still as leftover a very small quantity of fuel at the bottom that by the way is harmelss for the carburator itself and they will mix once you add fresh fuel in the tank. I have an Ariens ST 1028 w/ the 10HP Tecumseh engine that was purchased in 1996. Living in the NE (Rhode Island) we don't get Maine levels of snow but rest assured we get our fair share. Over the years this machine has NEVER failed me. Just by executing routine maintenance (oil change, grease and belt changes as necessary etc ...) it has proven to be extremely reliable. Over the years I've picked up things hiding under the snow but a 10 minute shear pin swap later and I'm back in business. Now mine does not have the easy turn so you do have to use a little muscle to turn it ... but you get used to it. The only other thing is need to stay on top of carburetor maintenance but I guess that's true of any carbureted machine. When my old faithful friend finally calls it a day I will be buying another Ariens ... probably the Hydro Pro 28" Rapidtrak. Although, my 21 year old warhorse shows no sign of failure so I may never see my Rapidtrak. I would never consider any other brand ... if you want a reliable machine buy an Ariens. Yes, they are a few bucks more but worth every penny.

Just an observation: order a supply of the retainer nuts that help hold the belly pan in place. The threads wear out after removing the belly pan a few times to service the transmission. They are small parts and can be had for less than $2.00 apiece. Very helpful to have when one goes bad on you. I've had my Ariens Deluxe 28 for about 4 years now and the first time I used it was on a 28" snowfall. It handled that much snow like a dream. Think about getting a set of drift cutters to help you with the really deep stuff. Enjoy the snow!

I got the impression that the "ice drill" chute control is more to let them share more parts with "quick turn" upgrade on the Platinum series, just a guess, tho. I never would've thought about the handle snagging things, but, maybe that is a common complaint. Ariens started with that gearbox brace when they went to "stubby" auger shafts on the non-commercial units. Not my favorite design choice but some cheap blowers use stubby axles without bracing it and that can really cause problems. A friend of mine got burned on a machine like that. He lives in the woods where debris is common. Well, when you don't have a brace, and you hit a downed branch, the whole auger can lift up, binding the auger on the stub shaft which doesn't allow the shear pin to take all the load. This causes the gearbox to break instead. He went through a couple gear boxes on a new machine before selling it and getting an Ariens.

I have owned one of these machines now for 8 years a couple of suggestions I would make would be when you first get the machine take the wheels off and grease the Axel's I did not do this and now my wheels are locked on solid I will try to get them off this summer. Where the auto spark plug is after plugging in an extension into that very small area one of the prongs broke off and the auto start I would suggest attaching a small extension cord in that area and wrapping it around the handles of the machine so it's easier access. Overall I'm very pleased with the performance and I would recommend that anyone buying one do your regular maintenance and the Machine will last

I noticed while looking at some of the new machines how cheap some of the materials are that they use on their machines compared to the older models. There's alot of plastic where there used to be steel (like our cars) and thin cables where there used to be think steels rods for the controls. The reason for the additional bracing between that auger housing and the differential is because of they use thinner metal and need that brace for rigidity and strength, because of the now thinner metal used so it won't bend or buckle. So just like all the others, unless you take good care of the machine and keep it from rusting out, it won't last near as long as some of the older machines.
@PaulSikkema2 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing that you are looking at Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt and Craftsman. Yes they have plastic dashes and some have plastic chutes - but just remember - they have been using that same setup now for almost 20 years and it's working. Watch my newest video on the Troy-Bilt StormTracker and you will get a better understanding of how the "small" cables work well for them. Toro has less plastic than they did 10 years ago and the Ariens in this video is all-metal - and for 2023 will still be.

The engine is designed to run on 87 Octane E10 fuel. DO NOT use E15 or higher ethanol blends. I put 2 tablespoons per gallon of Sea Foam in my storage can (Stabil 360, K 100 also work well) You can run ethanol-free fuel but be careful to keep the octane rating 90 or below. (some people try to run 104 Octane airplane fuel. ) When I'm done using the snowblower instead of turning it off with the on/off switch I let it run and turn off the fuel shutoff valve. This removes the gas from the carb and the SeaFoam coats the internal parts so they don't oxidize. Ariens has three videos you should watch. Paul I really like your informative videos. My 18 year old Craftsman has had a good run, but has developed a surging issue which isn’t economically repairable, so am searching for a new snowblower. Have done a fair amount of research and have zeroed in on Toro and Ariens. Both are good choices, but you have sold me on the Ariens. What I am trying to decide now is a 7 year old lightly used unit worth choosing relative to a new unit which will cost twice as much? I was starting to have some doubts about the newer auto steer systems, but do appreciate your excellent explanation of why they are a good idea.

If it has the autoturn it's probably a good choice. If it has the single trigger under the handle - it's older than a 2015 and that steering system can have issues.

I guess my thoughts are if it was a right hand control, put it on the right side? Instead of reaching across. It's a left side control, requiring the right hand to reach across. I'm left handed and I'd have to reach across for the drive with my right hand to rotate the chute with my left.

I never realized that the excess snow was being returned to the left side. I'll try to take less of a bite when I'm cutting snow from the right side so that I don't leave excess snow on the ground on the left side. My black, plastic belt cover bent inward toward the belts and, over time, wore a hole in the cover. When I installed a new cover, I put a short sheet metal screw in the middle and top of the cover so that it cannot move inward and ruin another belt cover. Ariens should make this modification. Also, I had to make s dipstick to check my transmission oil. Ariens should have included that with the machine.
@PaulSikkema2 жыл бұрын
The dipstick is actually the screw on the top of the case. When you remove the screw - if the oil is OK - the tip of the screw will have a blob of oil on the end. This Ariens video shows you how to check it. It starts a 5:50: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaGXooqhg5p3lbc

My question is what is the upgrades from the 2020 model to the 2021, I saw on a retail website description that they made some improvements with the drive axle placement, is this correct and can you give your opinion on that. Oh, and mine came already with the LED light installed... very nice.

EVerything else being the same if there is a 10% difference in width it should take 10% more power for the 28 to do the exact same job as the 24. That said, clearing 2-10 inches you will not notice a difference. Only when you get into heavy/wet snow or deep snow will you see the 24 inch handle it slightly better. But, for the "normal" 4-10 inches the 28 will get done just a little faster because it's wider.

Hi! Paul! I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. ... I have been using an Ariens snowblower for many, many years, and have been very happy with their performance. I live in central Wisconsin so we get a lot of snow. Last week I purchased a new 24 inch Deluxe like the one in this video. We just got a wet heavy deep snow, and the snowblower performed wonderfully. I am a handy old guy who repairs most everything. So I took a close look at the transmission, and belt drives. ... My question is, do you know why Ariens choose to use Carbon fiber, plastic drive belt pulley, and a carbon fiber /plastic rubber transmission drive rubber assembly, and a very small drive belt on such a large machine? Hopefully it isn't just to save a few dollars. I understand that Carbon fiber plastic is used widely in the automotive industry, and it seems to work more or less ok. I am just an old guy who would think the old style metal components, and the next size larger belt would hold up longer. If this becomes a "weak link" , and people start to have problems they might not recommend, or purchase another Ariens. The reason I am concerned is because there is no slippage in the tires. It has enough traction to drag a dog sled. Ha! Ha! ... Anyhow if a person was to ram into snowbanks, or something solid the wheel drive components seem like they could be a weak link. Especially as the components age. I could be totally wrong, and just don't understand the advantage of the new approach. Like I said I am just an old school, old guy. Ha! Ha! ... Oh! You are welcome to visit my channel. Then you can get an idea of how much snow I cleaned up with my old Ariens. I have a few snowblowing videos on my channel. My old machine is probably over 40 years old. It still runs strong, but I thought I would up date to a new one because of the new features, and to help support our local dealer, and Wisconsin workers. Thank you very much for your videos, and your time. ... Mike
@PaulSikkema3 жыл бұрын
The main reason is todays levlar belts can handle a lot more stress so it doesn't need to be as large as the old fiber belts. In side the transmission very, very few people would lubricate them so poly bushings, sloppy chains and lots of clearance in the gears keeps them running a long time without rusting and seizing up. None of those gears spin that fast so they really don't need high tolerances - just good quality. When the spring on the drive control cable is adjusted properly there will be slip on the friction wheel if it's needed. That will handle the shock of ramming the snowblower into stuff. I have no clue why they went with the plastic drive belt pulley - although the old one-piece metal unit is over $150 to replace.
@ilikoldies3 жыл бұрын
@@PaulSikkema Hi Paul! .. Thank you for your answers. You're very knowledgeable. I agree most people don't lube the inside parts. The new style composite fiber plastic drive wheel assembly can't rust to the shaft it slides on. Parts like the belt sure have improved in strength over the years. I have been retired for a lot of years, so I have a lot to learn about new technology. I wonder if they used a composite plastic pulley on the engine to reduce the amount of heat transfer to the belt, from the engine crankshaft. The changes appear to be for the purpose of improvements. I have trust in the Ariens engineers, I was just curious. Thank's again. Sorry if my spelling, or wording is goofie. I am typing this note on my phone. Thanks, great video. I was looking at the Ariens at Lowe's 28" or 30" but, We have a large 3/4 stone driveway. I'm worried about how easy is it to change the shear pins by the chute? Shear pins are easy to change. I tip the snowblower back onto the handles and that makes it easy to change them. When you get your snowblower change one out before you use the machine. That way you will know what you are doing in the middle of a snowstorm. That said, The only time I've ever had to change a shear pin on an Ariens was when I stuck the snowblower in a chain link fence. I've never had one break just clearing snow.

Just bought a Deluxe 24 from a dealer 2 days ago. I had 3 choices, Lowes and 2 dealers. One dealer had marked it up $300. The other dealer was same price as Lowes. Since Lowes doesn't do service or parts, I decided to give the local dealer my money. I asked about assembly and they said it comes from the factory ready to go. Oil and gear lube in the gearbox. All they did was add fuel and fire it up. My deluxe 24 has grease zerks on the shaft. Watching your video I wondered if mine was old stock but the dealer said they just got them in a month ago. Maybe the 28 uses bushings and the 24 uses zerks still? Anyway I feel like opening the gearbox to verify oil in it, as I read a horror story where someone got a blower with no oil in it and it was ruined very quickly. When the guy loaded the blower into my truck he used a fork truck and the forks scratched the paint on the bottom of the 'scoop'. Do I need to paint that before I use it or is it not a big deal? I wish he covered the forks with something first, I would have said something if I had seen him put it on the forks.
@PaulSikkema3 жыл бұрын
Around 6 minutes in this video, it shows you how to check the gearcase oil. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaGXooqhg5p3lbc The Deluxe has grease jerks on the auger shaft so the auger will spin freely if you break a shear pin. The grease keeps it from rusting into a solid mass over the years. A couple of shots of grease once a year is enough. Ariens uses thicker metal and the housing won't rust out over the years even if it's scratched or around salt. If the scratches bother you go to a farm store like Tractor Supply and get a small can of Kubota/Allis tractor paint. Use a brush to touch up the scratches.

@@PaulSikkema thank you. By the way I though I read that the gear oil should be up to the bottom of the fill bolt but mine is not. Is that where it should be??
@PaulSikkema3 жыл бұрын
The gearcase should have enough oil so the tip of the fill screw has oil on it. So, you should put more oil in your case.
@danwake44313 жыл бұрын
@@PaulSikkema thanks. While I was looking it up I contacted ariens directly about it and they said 2.4 to 2.6 inches down from the top of the gearbox case. Is there maybe a difference in oil requirement between 3 stage and 2 stage? My 2 stage has an aluminum plug in the front where the 3rd stage would go in so maybe the higher level is for those?
@PaulSikkema3 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry - I was wrong. Your gear case should look just like the one a minute 6:00 in the video above. Check your oil using the plug Aaron shows in the video. The proper oil amount is when there is oil about 2.5 inches down from the top of the gearcase. This is discussed on page 13 of your operator's manual. If you don't have a manual go back to the dealer and get the one that came with your snowblower. The aluminum plug is just a cover for the impeller shaft bearing holder. The case is cast iron painted black and the internal gears are bronze.

Snowblowers do not have air cleaners. Why use starting fluid? I suggest opening the fuel tank valve, Push the primer bulb 3-4 times (Make sure you cover the hole in the bulb with your finger), set the choke to full close and the throttle to full open, then using the 110 volt starter - run the starter 5 seconds. If it doesn't start push the primer button again 2 times. Don't run the electric start more than 10 seconds at a time. @PaulSikkema Жыл бұрын
The Ariens 24 Compact RapidTrak will be a lot easier to use than your wheeled 28 inch. The Compact is great for your typical suburban driveway that gets 4-12 inches of snow at a time. It does have a 10 inch impeller so it won't have as much capacity as your older Ariens 28 if you regularly got more snow than that. It will have enough traction to bust through your snowplow drift at the end of the driveway. Ariens does have the 28 inch Platinum RapidTrak. It's more money but it does have the capacity of your old one and it has a larger engine than your old one if you need the higher capacity.

Snow engines don't have any electronic or manual controls to adjust the fuel mixture - other than the choke. So, you can try moving the choke closed a notch or two at idle to see if that evens the surge out. I've also found that adding two tablespoons of SeaFoam can also help. Many snow engines do not have a throttle because of that surging - they run at preset speeds (usually full open)

Here's a question for you that you might have answered before but because I'm new to your channel I probably have never seen the answer. What is your go-to snowblower, what do you use the most?

My "everyday driver" is the Ariens RapidTrak Pro. I have seven driveways to clear and one is fairly steep - so the RapidTrak is always the safest to use on it. It's also the easiest and least tiring to use so I grab it most of the time for the other driveways also. . If I only have a couple of inches to clear off the sidewalks I grab the Toro 60 volt single-stage. It really fast for smaller snows. I had a Troy-Bilt 2860 that was also lightweight and worked well for 2-6 inch snows. (When I get more than a dozen snowblowers sitting around I give the older ones to local charities and veterans in need. I NEVER sell the snowblowers the brands give me to test) I also have two gravel parking lots that hold a total of 25 cars. If I have over 6 inches I'll use the Ariens RapidTrak Pro but if there's less than 6 inches I have a New Holland TC33D tractor/loader that's faster than walking those parking lots. I also use the tractor to clean up after the snow contractors at the Salvation Army and Benevolent Society that are close by. (The guys in their pickups can't be bothered with cleaning sidewalks or around entryways...)

@@PaulSikkema If I had two to four inches of snow I wouldn't be using a dual stage. The whole point of having a dual stage snow blower regardless is that you can do over 6 in of snow And the heavy snow. My Snow Joe courted electric snow blower heavy duty weighing about 35 lb could do two to four inches of snow much quicker than a dual stage. I fly with that thing and it works awesome. The only reason why I bought the PowerMax E24 is because in the blizzard we just had and when it's thick heavy snow 6 in or more I don't have to push to get rid of the snow.. two stage makes it easy. I guess in the best world if I had the money I'd probably buy the power max battery powered single stage snowblower to get rid of two to 4 in or even 6 in if it's light and fluffy.

@@PaulSikkema wow you have a lot of snow blowers that's awesome!!! I can only afford the electric snow Joe corded one 21 in. And I really had to spend a lot of money to get the E24 for the bigger stuff. My driveway is only 3 cars 10 ft wide, And I have a small front walk, and a backyard patio that would need to be done 25x25 So in heavy deep I would think that the E24 should be able to clear that. I guess I should probably buy another battery.. I should be good..

Realy interesting video! Is it realy under $1200 in the US? In sweden they are close to $3000 (including 25% VAT). I'm a bit of a snowblower fanatic, i have had a bunch of snowblowers, right now i have a yamaha ys-828 and a toro powermax 828, and a stiga (crap), but i'm realy intrerested in buying an ariens like this if i can get a deal on it, or maybe trade in the toro, the yamaha i keep, that one is a workhorse but oh so heavy to drive 💪

I didn't see if you addressed anything that gets lubed/greased ?
@PaulSikkema3 жыл бұрын
No, there is nothing that HAS to be lubed or greased. That said, if you want to keep you snowblower in the best shape here is avideo from Ariens that goes over suggestions you may want to do in the Spring kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJrZiYCLaL6KhZI
