Hey Ari, There's one real big mistake in this video: no gloves!😳

This is excellent. I fly a paramotor so I don't always have a harness on, and I totally experience the horseshoe when inflating my wing just in-hand, and now I know why -- because my As are together and on top of each other, rather than 1-2 feet apart. While I don't know that there's a better way of kiting the wing without being attached to a harness, at least I know why it is happening to me. I also don't have a lot of wind near me so most of my launches are in pretty light to nil wind. Kiting with a harness on in full wind will be fun now that I have a few different techniques from this video to try! Thanks Ari!

Happy to hear this was helpful! A lot of people, myself included for so long, dont think about the different line tensions based on where they're pulling

Nice Video but...I don't think it makes any difference to the wing whether you are pulling the As towards the carabiners or lifting them up. As long as you operate the A's one in each hand and you maintain tension on your carabiners, it makes no difference at all. We are talking about the initial lift here. Once the wing is overhead the 'As' become irrelevant. You can maintain a wing in half inflation in light winds just supporting it with the 'As'. I've spent many hours kitting for fun and for launch practice. Sometimes I pull back, other times I lift and I don't find much difference in it. In light winds you can't get enough 'pull' out of the raiser and have to go up the line to get the wing to inflate. In strong winds mostly just lifting the As from the Bs is enough to make the wing come up. The same applies to the Cs or Ds once the wing is flying. I pull down on them hard when I want the wing to collapse but for directional stability I simply push away and or down lightly. It doesn't seem to make much of a difference at all. When pre-inflating without a harness, it is impossible to separate the raisers as you will be holding As in one hand and Cs in the other. This is really not kiting but preparing the wing for launch and making sure all lines are good with no tangles etc. Also a great way to lay the wing into wind nicely and get a feel for the air.

20 years of flying here, makes no difference whatsoever… think about a forward launch…you are not pulling the A’s straight down to launch, you are lifting the leading edge…this is pretty useless advice.

Good points here. This theory would also apply to a's and c's launch technique as your changing the geometry all over the place especially depending on the glider. I see some pilots on launch with this style, staying in reverse kite mode for ridiculous amount of time before turning. They also tend not to move towards wing as they try and do all controls with hands. Is best to to turn just as glider comes overhead and kite in forward position. Risers are not twisted and you have a more true feel for the wing.

I think the biggest kiting error is not moving your feet enough. Good point

I got the yeti convertible (the same in your vid?) basically for ground handling lol. And the odd soaring flight. My pod harness is rubbish for gh because it feels like a big poo hanging off my bum and banging against my legs and so I found I wasn't really doing any practice. So one error is to not have a harness that's good for ground handling.

Hahahahaha! Can't have a poo danglin'

I have that harness, I love it for flying, but I'm glad I already had kids, inflating with it is a bit painful on the crown jewels. I'm suffering by seeing a PI on sand and rocks, I guess is already on its way out. To avoid a horseshoe while inflating with both risers in one hand, I just place the wing as a horseshoe in the ground, it will always inflate from the center first. Then again, different wings behave differently.

Hahahaha! You only have one pair of balls, but you're gonna have lots of paragliders in your career. Tools - not jewels! And yes, the horseshoe layout is the perfect way to pull up without a horseshoe!

Interesting stuff, I grew up with A in each hand but folks today are saying both A in one hand and C's in the other so you can kill it quickly. BTW - where is your training hill, at first I thought the craters in flagstaff

Thanks for the video, just wondering what category is the glider you’re using for this demonstration, A B or C? Cheers 🤘😄

Interesting. There's a lot of psychology in people lifting the As to try and lift the wing (rather than pulling in) and pulling down on the Cs to try and bring the wing down (rather than pulling in to the karabiners). I have been guilty of both.

Dude. Nobody taught me that about if your A’s are together it horseshoes. I have noticed it horseshoe but didn’t think about the lines being tighter on the outside. Do you think if you had the A’s far apart the wing would come up with less power?
@AriintheAir3 жыл бұрын
Maybe if you pulled them like 3' apart it would fuck up the geometry enough to make it less powerful lol
@LiiMuRi3 жыл бұрын
If you get the horseshoe when launching (ie when you may need to have both As in one hand), you can also just grab the inner As. That way the wing inflates from the center and also with less power
@srd2010srd2 жыл бұрын
For me first you must have prepare, and hold the brake lines to always, grabe the A's with one hand and one brake the other hand is control the glider, most of pilots dosn't do that

Your fisrt tip was nonsense. Pulling is wrong and lifting is right , if you disagree than you probably just fount a glider specific tip. Im serious because if i pull on the As while its on the ground it jus folds the glider in half like a taco and closes the cells. If i lift it opens the cells and lets wind in there and allows the glider to fly. The only reason to ever pull As would be to accelarate the glider, it could also be that you have so little wind that you need to accelarate the glider(aditude on the ground) for it to fly at all, i liked the anti horshoe technique, you even mentioned your self that acro glider pilots need to do it all the time, this shows just how glider specific these subtleties can be. I hope you appreciate my useless criticism.--> here is a metaphore for our situation( ari in the aair=bill, me=jim) Bill says"your all white, every single one of ya" jim says "im black", bill says"oh yeah i forgot"
@commentcrafter41583 жыл бұрын
You also want to walk or run quickly backwards... this is important in light wind... you dont launch a paper airplane gently you give it a good huck , its just like my paper airplane metiphore, the running backwards give you a bost of airspeed yo get it up there then you can keep it up in light wind if you are VERY carefull not to stall the glider( in extremely light wind any amount of breaks will stall the glider, if you are about to stall it while kiting put your hands up(no brakes) and run backwards, this is a tip i would have liked to see in the video... oh yeah and show the people how to kill the glider in super high wind if they are getting drug to canada, this is an important tip for safety... you probably already know this but show the people how to kill the glider : to stall the wing in high wind you pull both brakes and wrap them around your wrists till the wing stops flying. If been kiting out in gust s that required me to to like 5 or 6 wraps arund my wrists to stop the glider from flying(draging me across the gound off to canada) not fun and extremely dangerus if you do not know this last resort tip to kill the wing, thank you for your awesome paragliding videos, isnt flying just the funnest thing ever!
