In 2008, a historic event took place: The New York Philharmonic, under the baton of acclaimed conductor Lorin Maazel (1930-2014) traveled to Pyongyang, North Korea to perform a concert at East Pyongyang Grand Theatre. It was the first time since the Korean War that significant US-American cultural representatives were permitted to visit the secluded country. This event captures a historic moment in which music found itself navigating sensitive political realities, and revealed its unique power - the power to awaken human minds and to push for change by creating moments of communication, unity, and hope.
The New York Philharmonic began the concert by performing the national anthems of North Korea and the United States, followed by a program that introduced the audience to European and US-American classics - Richard Wagner, Antonín Dvořák, George Bizet, Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin's "An American in Paris". The orchestra closed the concert with the famous Korean folk song "Arirang", which is beloved in both, South and North Korea.

I was in South Korea when this performance was broadcasted live. It was nothing short of amazing seeing everyone, literally everyone, drop what they were doing so they could watch and listen. For the roughly ten minutes this was heard the idea of North vs South Korea was put on hold. What most people don't talk about is that after this concert the NYPhil was held up coming back to the states. Regardless: history was made here, and it was cool getting to witness it. Fun fact: this rendition of Arirang was composed by a North Korean.

Beautiful ❤. I really enjoyed attending the North Korean, ''Songs of Reunification Concert' in Seoul in 2018. Everyone had tears in their eyes at the end of the performance. Me too.❤

My understanding of that expression is to forcefully prevent someone from leaving some place. If that is the case, could please supply a link? I Goggled this assertion and of more than 50 suggestions, not a single one mentioned such an occurrence.

​@dannyaraujo9515 best bet would be to contact the Phil itself and ask about it. I was in South Korea like I said when both this concert happened as well as receiving word (and not street word via the Lance Corporal Underground nor the E4 Mafia) that they were not being allowed to leave when they intended to. Myself and others began to wonder if we were going to end up going over the border by force to rescue them. The Phil probably still has people who were there in North Korea in 2008, and could probably recall what happened after the concert. Most I can recall is North Korea didn't like someone's information on a visa or passport or something; so I didn't mention it because it isn't clear to me anymore. It was through them however that I found out the name of the North Korean who composed this rendition of Arirang (years before finding this KZbin link).

SO moving! It was incredible they chose Airirang to end on, an American group playing an North Korean arrangement of a song N and S Koreans all have claim to as their national identity. Music can really unite us if only for a moment. The audience was so cool to see too, everyone's reactions and their appreciation at the end. It makes me wonder, do they listen to classical alot in NK? Is it popular? And do audiences observe the same "rules" (no clapping between movements etc) that we do or are there different conventions?

How you can you in all honesty assume that? I am willing to bet was a mission to reach out to the North Korean people as part of a greater mission of reconciliation between our two governments.

So I was in South Korea when this played live in 2008. For all the garbage that we knew Kim Jong-Il to be: one thing he did right was have an appreciation for the arts. The diplomatic negotiations to get the New York Philharmonic of all ensembles into Pyongyang was and is way out of my league for what I'm paid to know and understand, but they got it done. Every facial reaction in the audience I'll assure you was genuine. South Koreans shared the same, and for the roughly ten minutes while this played and was heard there were no longer two separate Koreas; just one. For all the ways American Pie II (band camp) was detrimental to the music industry this gave practically every reason for it to still exist and continue to thrive. I'll also throw out there that this particular rendition of Arirang was composed by a North Korean composer. I looked hard trying to find it, and eventually I came across that tidbit of info, and I contacted the NYPhil to confirm it which they did.
