Music royalties are (intentionally) setup to be confusing AF! It’s overly complicated, with antiquated laws and structures that are not setup for the modern music and technology era we’re in now. Download my free Royalties Flowchart and learn about all things royalties: aristake.io/C9e33o

Thank you, Ari and Jaime, for a candid, inspiring conversation. I am particularly happy that Jaime ended by emphasizing the value/power of cultivating and maintaining respectful relationships (which seemed to be part of why she is OK with songwriters giving some of the ownership of their songs to artists who agree to record/release them). I also liked hearing about songwriters asking for a small piece of the master recordings made of their songs! It would be fascinating if you could do a video, Ari, interviewing a music business historian about how the interests of songwriters/publishers and record labels/artists and media companies (radio/movies/TV/downloading/streaming) have battled/evolved here in the USA ever since the days of the first piano rolls...

Stage actors don’t demand a portion of the scriptwriters’ income; why should recording artists do that?

Ari with what happened at 24:34 needs to be fixed with those producers sending the label an inducement letter from the start as well as split sheet to avoid that legally.

There are average songs , and then there are great songs. A professional song writer should know a great song when he hears one.

Sounds like writers are the least valued people in the business. To be honest this maybe is the reality of songwriters these days but she seems to care more about her own business than about her writers. Just don't be difficult ;) Giving away publishing for nothing? GO. Asking for points? NO GO. Thats why even the biggest writers don't look happy at all on their socials.

I also don't believe anyone should make changes on material that they did not produce or write. If the original concet or the songs intent is the most important thing to the writer.

I personally would not have a problem with the artist getting co-writer status. Their talent brings the song to the public. I think it is right that they should get part of the ownership of the song.

STOP!!! Songwriters DON’T need a publishing deal. Publishing companies do NOT place songs or hookup writers with chart acts….. Publishing companies just collect royalties. Songwriters need to keep their publishing and HUSTLE with the major production and artist management companies of the day to get co-writing opportunities and trade their publishing share with those companies…. Follow the MONEY and the path forward is clear…..🤔

Yes and no ..Curious to know what you think happens when you get an opportunity for a songwriting placement and a major publisher or label blocks you from that opportunity because they don’t get a piece of YOUR publishing. Why you ask ???Because you aren’t signed to them! Do you know how hard it is getting in rooms if you or your manager isn’t attached to the major label/publisher machine? Follow the money?? Who do you think writes these checks? Here’s a hint.. it’s not managers or artist.. It’s a case by case scenario. And any good manager will tell you just that based off where you are in your career at the time. Simply having An ascap or bmi account is not going to bring you opportunities lol ..Let’s not even talk about getting paid your advance and chasing labels for your money if you’re not apart of the machine. So tread lightly on the advice you’re giving.. until you’ve been in the situations I just described. Or don’t what works best for you: most things are case by case.

So what’s the difference between writers and artists in this context other than what seems to be a certain amount of fame and money for the artist compared to writers?
@ArisTake2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ryan, two different copyrights / different royalty streams / different payment companies. Simply, what if you covered my song? You'd be the Artist I'd be the Songwriter. You get all the money from master royalties (Artist share) and I get all royalties from publishing (writers) This video should help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6KVfXqFdt6eps0

Very VERY interesting interview Ari! And Jaime is great. Very knowledgeable and forthright and most importantly to me, genuine. My friend Dan Couch co-wrote Hey Pretty Girl and Truck with Kip Moore but he had to "play the game" for 17 yrs in Nashville networking before being placed with Kip in a writing session. Same thing with my friend Hal, who I've known and played in bands with for 20 yrs. He networkEd and is just a nice guy and out of the blue 6 yrs ago has been Joan Jetts bassist. Although I choose to believe his success came from karma and just being a good dude. It's unfortunate you have to "play the game" so much, but it's a good life lesson in general. I LOVE Jaimes thought process of "keep it moving." I've always been a songwriter of a Ryan Adams, Jason Mraz, alt bands of the 90s like goo goo dolls or mb20 that do their own writing within so I was surprised to hear maroon 5 uses outside songwriters. Great job Ari! 🎉

If the song doesn't fir the Artist or isn't like by the artist, they shouldn't record it . they need to find someting more to their likeing and or style that fits the band or singers sound.
@marlowdurden533010 ай бұрын
Hello, I beleive that if an artist didn't write or have a part in writing a song, should not, get any credit and any material they didn't write. If this is done, it diminish the the song writer as a writer also, false credit to the creator of that material.
@zvw444x3zefaАй бұрын
I disagree. As a lyric writer, I would not have a problem with sharing with everyone involved who helps make the song a success.
