Nice video and explanation, just one little thing. "Telos" in ancient greek means "completion". The explanation behind the etymology of the word is that according to Aristotle when you reach completion, eydaimonia, you fullfill you purpose predefined by nature. It's easy to mix up.

Artwork by Hilbert, artwork by Hilbert, artwork by Hilbert, woman and child sitting in the rain under a leaf, artwork by Hilbert :P If you've never read Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers (by Diogenes Laertius c.300 CE) I highly suggest you check it out. Especially if you're planning to do more on Ancient Greece - it's an incredibly fascinating book, filled with tidbits about the opinions and personal lives of most of Ancient Greece's philosophical elite. I've mostly been using Book II for some of my source information for my videos on Hegesias and his contemporary Theodorus, but Book III is all about Plato and the various schools of philosophy that formed from him - it might be a nice addition to your arsenal of sources :) There's 10 books in total, and it all can be viewed for free online if you're curious: en.wikisource.org/wiki/Lives_of_the_Eminent_Philosophers But I digress, great video as always!

It is prudent to contrast this with existentialism. While it accepts the knife example (sharp knife -> fulfills purpose -> is good), it denies the existence of a universal human purpose (be virtuous/achieve eudaimonia).

Actually, Thomas of Aquinas was a student of the first translators/readers of Aristotle in the Middle Ages in Western Europe who attained it through the Arabs in Spain who preserved Aristotle. The Eastern Empire was more influenced by Plato, and so was/is Eastern Christianity, whereas, Thomas Aquinas (and scholasticism) are the children of Aristotle.

Nice video. Just a few things: deontology and agent centred are not synonymous. Agent centred is often associated with deontology, and I know some like Nussbaum whom believe them to be indistinct, but contemporary VE's do not share this view. Macintyre is not precisely representative of most neo-aristotelians in meta-ethics. For a less conservative, and arguably more influential figure to VE, see the work of Elizabeth Anscombe.

Yeah! Waiting for Milan flag still. Anyway great job. Thomas aquinas is dope. I read that his parents really didn’t want him to become a monk. (Which is weird since he was a noble) So he escaped to France until his two brothers came to pick him up. (Read beat him senseless). They then brought him back to the castle and locked him up. Since he was unwavering in his decision, his mother thought of one last trick: he came to Thomas who was still pretty young, and brought with her a young girl who was naked. She then closed the door to aquinas chamber and waited for the magic to happen. What happened instead is that he charged at a crucifix, grabbed it and used it to ward off the poor girl. What a bigot...

Aristotle was a clever guy but I think some of his ideas are flawed. The Roman politician Cicero makes some great counter arguments against Aristotle's theories about virtue. Cicero says that Justice is the most important virtue and he makes the point that evil people can still be intelligent and courageous. He says that without justice you can't be a good person even if you have all the other virtues.
@shorewall5 жыл бұрын
I like that argument, but I would look at each virtue in its own category. And instead of calling the aggregate good or bad, maybe we call it full vs. empty. A person can be full of virtues, and that makes them...more actualized, more potent. But like Cicero said, goodness, as we usually think of it, would be based off of Justice and Mercy, those kind of virtues. Then again, maybe we can divorce good and bad as describers of morality, and specifically say what we mean. Someone can be just, can be merciful, can be charitable. And then goodness can be the measure of virtues that a person has, the fullness that they attain. I think it is important to be Just, to be Merciful, to be Charitable, but if someone lacks those, but is intelligent, courageous, etc. do we not still admire them? Maybe we should use admirable vs. not admirable. The more virtues someone has, the more admirable they are, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are "good", unless they are Just, etc.
