@dan-us6nk

Two nations wanting the same land. It's not special. The only reason that this seems that way is because of political interests around the conflict, and because it's not resolved in an era where most of these conflicts are history. Take Alsace-Lorraine for example. A region in Germany/France. The locals just want to live in peace, wherever they are granted rights and living standards, they are half German and half French anyways! (as far as I know, bare with me for the example). But France and Germany are not at war or conflict so nobody talks about the two nations both wanting the Alsace-Lorraine. France has it now. A German wants to go there - He can because of the EU passport/citizenship, the French and Germans stopped fighting and now this land is accessible for both nations, why not? Could Arabs and Hebrews just share the holy land? Absolutely yes. Will they? as long as hatred is taught, no. I listened to a person who made a documentary about her friends who lived surrounding Gaza. Those people said there could be life together with Palestinians, they said if they were doctors they would voluntarily cure Gaza citizens for nothing in exchange but the resolving of the conflict. They were murdered on October 7th, non-combatants. It's about education. Two children want the same sandbox, they could share or they could fight and no one can have fun in it - but we grow up and learn to share. It's really that simple.

@@dan-us6nkwow, thank you for these beautiful words. They really moved me. Even though I don't have any connection to these lands, the conflict has felt very close to my heart. To see people fighting over something they could so easy share in peace if only they just did so. To me it feels like this conflict will never end until one side eradicates the other, which is such a gruesome and grim vision of the future. I want all these people to live. I want them to just. stop. fighting. Revenge is such an ugly thing, it just feeds on itself in a never ending cycle.
@Goobiesnoop
@Goobiesnoop 10 ай бұрын
It isn't as simple as two nations wanting the same land, it is the complexity of a nation being given to another people right after the second world war; a people who had not been involved in the persecuation of the Jews being forced to give up their land to make a safe haven for the Jews of Europe. One major problem, that should be obvious by now: You don't make friends by stealing another persons stuff. And now with 75+ years of nonstop occupation and apartheid being brought upon the palestianians, resistance towards oppression was inveitable. This is not to justify any acts committed, it is to state the obvious that now with the Gaza genocide happening, another act of genocide is being brought upon the people of the West Bank, where bedouins get killed and villages set ablaze. So is it a case of two nations wanting the same land or a case of European neo-colonialism once again screwing up another region of the world like it did to South Africa? @@dan-us6nk

Your all a little bit wrong this conflict isn’t “difficult” or complicated. And it’s not as simple as a fight for holy land. This is quite literally a fight for cultural and ethnic survival between Muslim and Christian Palestinians against a occupational apartheid fascist regime. "Once you get out of Tel Aviv it gets much cheaper in israel" Let's put that into perspective Mr. Beat. The prices in a small town in the north are equivalent to prices in London for example. 5:13 The name Palestine comes from the Philistines - a tribe from the "sea people", probably from Mycenaean Greece who invaded and setteled at the southern coast of Cannan, during the bronze age collapse. The name most likely comes from the etymological root "Invader" in Cannanite languages. The most famous if them all is Goliath, from the story of "David and Goliath". The Greeks begun to refer to the entire area of Cannan after them - Philistia. And the name survived also after the extinction of the Philistines at the 8 century BC when the Assyrian empire conqured it. After one of the Jewish revolts against Rome - as Mr. Beat mentioned, the area was renamed by it's Latinized Greek name - Palestina. (Like almost every other thing the Romans did with Greek culture...)

Excellent analysis overall. One point to add was the effects of 1973 Yom Kippur War with Syria and Egypt. Israel was caught flat-footed, lost territory early in the war, and suffered heavy casualties. And although Israel managed to win the war, Egypt gained the necessary leverage to bargain for the return of the Sinai peninsula during the 1978 Camp David Accords.
@ingGS
@ingGS 8 ай бұрын
Israel was caught “flat-footed” because the U.S. and Britain told them NOT to attack, they knew the war was coming, the King of Jordan warned Golda Meier, but she could not do anything otherwise they would lose western support. Also, Egypt did not get any bargaining rights, the U.S. pressured Israel to give back Sinai in exchange for peace, Israel had clear plans to build urban settlements in the Sinai with as much as 200.000 people, but the idea of peace with arabs and that extending to other countries was a better deal to Israel.
@JoshuaFinancialPL
@JoshuaFinancialPL 8 ай бұрын
actually no. Israel wanted to give back Sinai and Gaza for peace with Egypt and Egypt refused to take back Gaza and the people there. Gaza still has a southern border with Egypt, which is closed by massive Egyptian fortifications and military. beyond that border is uninhabited desert - but Egypt wont open their border to gazans even to allow a refugee exodus from the war with Hamas. Wonder why.

Excellent video, Mr. Beat; Just a small correction: Israel doesn't "militarily" occupy the Golan, it just occupies it. A military occupation would be like in the West Bank, where military law is set in place, rather than civil law. This difference is because, unlike the West Bank, Israel annexed the Golan. This annexation wasn't recognized at all by other countries, however because of the annexation, citizenship was given and civil law takes place there like with the rest of israel

@@iammrbeat Hey Mr. Beat nice video, however while you mention that ever since the Romans called Israel, "Palestine", it does not mean that the group who refer to themselves today as palestinians, were in control of the land simply due to the name given by the Romans. In fact when the Romans called the land of Israel, "Palestine"(which was based on the Aegean Greeks"Phillstines"), Islam was not even around until 7 centuries later! The fact that you say all those palestinians before 1948 lived in Israel and grouped together to fight Israel, gives the impression that it was an Arab Palestinian land before, which it never was. There was never a group of Arabs known as the palestinians (of today), they were simply Arabs from the surrounding countries who lived there aside for the Muslim occupiers of the land such as the Turks etc. Also Jews lived in Israel throughout the years as well, of course it was a minority because they were getting killed all over the world including in Israel by the occupying nations. The land was called Palestine so anyone who lived there before 1948 was known as palestinian but it was not an identity of a nation, it was simply a technicality which means Jews were also called palestinians due to living in the land under that name. Palestinians as we know today formed in 1967 by Arafat who had the idea to adopt the false name of the land given by the Romans which stuck until 1948 to give the impression that it was always their land. You never told us when the "palestinians'' declared independence of the land and who their rulers were, because it never happened. If anything it was a Jewish land for thousands of years, and then reclaimed in 1948 through war. So by all accounts its a Jewish land. Just because their were many occupiers of the land doesnt mean it changed anything, those occupiers never declared it as their land they already had a land of their own. Name one Arab/Palestinian king who had sovereignty over a land called Palestine. Can You? P.S. Also when Babylon and Rome invaded, Jews didnt willingly leave at all, they fought till the death and those who left were forced to leave, captured and taken into Exile. If you look at Jewish prayers from those times (which Jews still have in the existing prayer books), all the prayers were about returning to Jerusalem and the Rebuilding of the Temple to serve G-D. They wanted to return to Israel but could not.

Noting that Israel and Palestine are both democracies misses an enormous difference in their political cultures. Universität Würzburg (Germany) ranks 176 nations by quality of democracy. In this ranking, Israel is 35, the US is 36, the West Bank is 166, and Gaza is 168.

@@iammrbeat Great summary... I forgot the details, but didn't the Mongols make it that far west during the 13th or 14th century? Basically, right up to the Red Sea... Not that they were very friendly when establishing their empire... But thought that their reach went that far right around the time when they were able to establish one of the largest contiguous empires; shortly before the Ming Dynasty came to power and they were under attack from multiple directions. Speaking of which, not sure if you venture into the religious topics... But, was always curious as to the extent of Confucianism, if any, with the dominate monotheistic religions as I noticed some common stories when I was studying in China - but never pursued the matter.

Amazing how much you were able to cover! I really appreciate when KZbinrs with a large audience are willing to speak about the region. Also impressive that Harry's is willing to sponsor. Respect. A few things: 1. 3:50 Jews were enslaved by Babylon they didn't just flee. I believe the number is at least ten thousand. Cyrus freed them and allowed them to return, not just encouraged. 2. 10:07 Fun fact: Zionists were not sure at first whether they would settle in Palestine. Among other countries they considered Uganda and Japan. Imagine an alternate universe where it is called the "Japanese -Israel" conflict. 3. 16:40 Syria actually signed a ceasefire agreement in 1974 and it's been the longest lasting ceasefire agreement between Israel and any other Arab state. Syrians often accuse Hafez of selling us out in the six-day war as everyone from IDF, IAF, USA, and Syrian army witnesses claim the surrender of Golan was premature. There is also an article about Hafez receiving $100 million for the land.

About 2, you're wrong in the terminology. There were such ideas, yes, but they weren't coming from zionist (the word Zion is another name for the land of Israel), but by people who called by themselves Territorialist. Anyway, they were a minor movement and faded after a few decades. Their biggest achivement was the autonomous jewish region in the USSR, which was also kinda made possible by the Bund and as a reaction to USSR jews being mostly zionist. About 3, Syria and Israel did fight during the lebanese conflict in a few battles, also Israel pretty regularly bombs Iran and Hizballah places of intrest in Syria, not to mention the destruction of the syrian nuclear reactor. There hasn't been a total war, yeah, but it's a very tense ceasefire.

@@enoch9468 2. In the early 20th century Cyprus and El Arish on the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt and its environs were proposed as a site for Jewish settlement by Herzl. 3. 17:34 The withholding of tax revenues was not simply as compensation, it was specifically because of the PA's Martyrs Fund. The Martyr's Fund is a program run by the PA in which money is given to Palestinians who are killed or imprisoned fighting Israel. Israel argues that, as the majority of those who receive funding through this program died or were imprisoned due to making terror attacks on civilians, this is a "pay-for-slay" policy (the actual wording used), and so has withheld an amount of money equivalent to what the PA spends on the Martyr's Fund.

@Svenskanorden1that’s incorrect. They sided with the British because the young Turk revolution which over through the sultan and made more of a mess out of the empire, which had been in decline. The British manipulated, lied, and pressured for the people to rise up, then stabbed them in the back. Due to Britain’s heavy racist motivation to get rid of the Jewish refugees after WWII, they saw the perfect opportunity to “cleanse themselves” of the “Jewish problem” and make life better for the Jews. European Zionism was founded in antisemitism and racism, and it’s still a core of the belief today. Which explains why Israel is so content with apartheid systems and oppression.

Overall a really solid and informative analysis and history of both places. The only small critique I would make is that you said that overall Israel tends to be “much more free and fair,” and while by no means is Palestine’s democracy perfect or extremely democratic, it is important to give perspective that there is much systemic and fundamental legislature in place in Israel which openly and explicitly advocates for segregation and discrimination of people based on nationality. For example, your nationality is determined by your ethnicity and it cannot be changed or challenged. Many of the rights you are accorded in Israel stem from your nationality, not your citizenship. Therefore, though the democracy of Israel may be more ostensibly free and fair, it is important to remember that there is fundamental systemic discrimination in even the un-occupied (military) sectors and regions of Israel. Just wanted to point this out to highlight a potentially significant piece of information about Israel compared to Palestine.
@ouri1212

for anyone reading this comment, please know that absolutely none of that is true.. I actually had a different problem with the video, it happens to be with the same sentence as you pointed out.. Even though the democracy in Israel isn't flawless it is miles ahead of any of it's neighboring states and it is definitely lightyears away from the Palestinian democracy... The sentence you wrote "while by no means is Palestine’s democracy perfect or extremely democratic" is hilarious really, they don't even hold elections. They are simply not a democracy and never have been.

A fifth to a quarter of Israeli citizens are Arabs. They have full rights as citizens. The only differences: Jews have the right of return while Arabs do not, as letting every single person who claims to be a fifth-generation Palestinian "refugee" claim citizenship would cause obvious problems. If you don't know what I mean, Israel would not exist anymore. Also, Arab Israelis are exempt from the draft.

@@ouri1212 @TizBaz5 Israel has the modern equivalent of Jim Crowe laws… racism, segregation, and racial stratification are core tenants of the Zionist movement. Non Jewish Israeli citizens are established as second class citizens under law. The right of return is not the only thing Arabs are denied. Making the claim that “5th generation citizens” coming back to Palestine would be an issue is nonsensical, most of them are the children (2nd gen) and grandchildren (3rd gen) of the victims of nakba… there are Israelis living in the houses their living relatives built… Compare that to the right of return to Jews who can’t trace their lineage to region for 2000+ years. Millions have been granted citizenships with no verification of lineage but that’s not an issue because it reinforces the colonization, right?? If the living natives, and immediate descendants of them, return to the region, as you said, the colony state of Israel literally wouldn’t exist, it would be a united Palestine again where the Zionist don’t enjoy a privileged status anymore and instead are made equal. I really don’t see the comparison here.

The british also promised itself it would occupy palestine and jordan and promised france Lebanon and syria (which you hinted at). One thing left out was that Britain ALSO promised the entire land to the Meccan royal family in exchange for support to overthrow the ottomans. This is one reason, I suspect, why the muslim nations were against the UN borders at the time.

The word Palestine derived from Peleset, a tribe of “Sea Peoples” likely from Sicily. They are the biblical Philistines, and Peleset roughly means “invader” in Hebrew. “Palestine” or “Philistia” (root of Filastin) was a region in the south consisting of 5 major cities, the chief among them being Gaza and Ashkelon. The Philistines were conquered by the Neo-Assyrians in the 7th century BC and scattered into exile across their empire just like the 10 lost tribes. Your idea of “generally lived in peace” is also extremely dumbed down and an outright lie. There have been countless massacres and pogroms against Jews in Muslim-ruled Palestine, with frequency increasing rapidly in the lead up to the establishment of Israel.

Hey Mr. Beat, I have been a subscriber of yours for a few years now. I will begin by saying that this video is amazing, you covered the subject efficiently, and you have presented the land's history from an objective standpoint. I was extremely surprised that when you zoomed in on the Israeli map you were set on the city i grew up in (Yehud). I was somewhat moved by that, never thought you will ever have an encounter with my small hometown. Anyways, I think that this is a great opportunity to thank you for your great educating content. Additionally, I was a little disappointed that you did not mention how successful the Israeli economy has been. For a country who wasn't gifted with great natural resources, our success was created thanks to entrepreneurship nature of our people. Anyway, great video and really looking forward to that Tel-Aviv Jerusalem comparison.

As a jew who lives in Israel, this was a great and pretty objective video! One small correction though regarding the law of return - The orthodox consider jews to only be ones with a jewish mother (or converted). However, the Israeli law actually allows any person with at least one jewish gradparent to visit and get a citizenship. This is mostly as a result of the nazi policy during the holocaust, which considered anyone with at least one jewish grandparent a jew, and thus to be executed.

@@ezra7088 The first draft stated that the borders would be decided by the UN partition plan, but among others Ben Gurion opposed this by stating: "We accepted the UN Resolution, but the Arabs did not. They are preparing to make war on us. If we defeat them and capture western Galilee or territory on both sides of the road to Jerusalem, these areas will become part of the state. Why should we obligate ourselves to accept boundaries that in any case the Arabs don't accept?" Ultimately the provisional government specifically voted against designating any borders in the declaration of independence, thus there is no mention of borders.
@fe6767

If we are interested in getting things right, both sides prepared for war, not just one. And one side started their preparations decades earlier and put much more money and effort into it. Many Zionists opposed the UN partition plan (and had opposed earlier partition plans). Ben Gurion's way of "accepting" the UN partition plan was a convenient way of "accepting" it for international consumption and keeping his followers happy by planning to take whatever territory Israel could get. A strategy that continues in a slightly modified form today. Voting against setting borders shows an intention to expand.
