Florence Az. I know the family that live in the Martinez cabin. The VillaVerde family lived there in the 1952. Mr. Villaverde worked the old mill, while his wife Connie, son Peter and 2 daughters Vikky and silvia lived in the red cabin. In 1956 this was a flood that can through the canyon and almost washed the family away. Connie and the kids moved to florence where they lived out their lifes. Connie and the son Peter recently pasted and are buried in the cemetery out near the cabin. There are 17 graves there. There is a Highways magazine from January 1997 that Connie did an interview telling the storey about living out there.

Used to go to Martinez canyon years ago. Came in from the Phoenix side. If you keep going you will run into an old mill, that still has the machinery inside. Also what was once a bar inside a cave.

if the rig ain't got Arizona Pin Stipes, ya ain't been 4X4ing with me. pin stripes and Gouges taken out of the skid plates - have a story for most of the gouges - pin stripes just basic badge of courage and use. Nice video. Old Mesa boy. grew up with friends from Kearny area. Road looked in darn good shape compared to some of my past trips. The road has Signs???! Gates??!!! it's been awhile since I was out that way. Did the Coke Ovens with quads years ago. Took a good bit of skill, and puckered up some leather seat cover. drove across the Gila River once to get out. Snuck through the railroad tunnel a couple of times. Stood on the bridge over the Gila. there was a yellow mark showing level of late 1970's Flood. I'm 6ft+ couldn't stand on toes and reach it. heck of a lot of water. Highly recommend do not use tunnel. walked first time, ran like a ape with his butt on fire twice on the quads. When the railroad tracks are shiny - they've been used. Last I heard, you can't even try and do it - someone got caught up in the cow catcher of one. All that area has some gorgeous country. high level of 4X4 required. always let folks know where you're going, when you expect to be out.

I grew up in San Antonio, TX, but have lived in AZ for 15 years. I know what you mean. TX is almost completely covered with barbed wire and private ranch land.
@ericsimpson11764 жыл бұрын
I am from Boerne , now live in a very small town in far west AZ. Texas is almost all private property because after the Texas war with Mexico in 1836 the Texas soldiers were paid in land grants so Texas immediately went into private ownership.
@st1buchanan6984 жыл бұрын
@@ericsimpson1176 I'd never thought about that . I guess back then Texas had no money but plenty of land .I knew that's how the XIT Ranch was formed but hadn't considered the rank and file soldiers.

I lived in Coolidge 2 for a few years in high school and a few jobs there i live in Tucson now I still have family in Coolidge we have been to Box Canyon many times on our ATVs interesting to see there's a gate postings no Vehicles we have ridden to Martinez cabin and the mine many many times you could start out at 8 in the morning for 5 hour ride your back headed home it is a cool ride sad to see you can't ride into Martinez cabin. There used to be 2 diesel generators sitting on the concrete slabs next to the cabin there's an old cable rig dozer pretty cool and you can ride all the way to superior well you used to be able to I don't know anymore with that gate they're very cool ride though
