Tons of fun watching all your videos. I live here in Southern Utah, and it's always fun to see the area being explored through others eyes. I've always loved living here and take advantage of getting out into the country as often as I can. As a note, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is amazing too. Less visited, and only open from Spring through Fall...as the elevation is high and snow makes it impossible to drive there, but because it is so high you get the beautiful forest of the Kaibab Mountain and less people. Also, you do have to be careful with slot canyons and rain. Sometimes it's the rain that is above in the Mountains that you have to be concerned about, even if it's miles away, if it's raining in the mountains, they drain into the canyons and fill up the slot canyons and they can be extremely dangerous. They are so dry most of the year, but flash floods can be no joke, so anyone going into the slots, watch the weather forecast and realize that it still can be dangerous even if it's not raining where you are.

In case you're curious about the species of bird flying below at 4:53, my guess is that it's a California condor. This is a species that nearly went extinct some decades ago, but was brought back from the brink, and is now making a great comeback. It truly is huge. I backpacked in from the trail that starts in the village (Bright Angel Trail), then came back out the next day via the Kaibab Trail, back in '90. The next year, I came in from the North Rim, and back out the same way the following day. Coming out took 10 hrs. 45 min. Re. the nearby tribes, just to the east of where you are is the huge Navajo (NAV-uh-hoe) Nation, with the Hopi (HOE-pea) Res. in its center. Nearby is a Paiute (PIE-yoot) res., as well as the Havasupai (have-uh-SUE-pie) and Haulapai (WAH-la-pie) about 40 miles downriver. Down near Tucson are the Tohono O'Odham, Apache (uh-PATCH-ee), and Yaqui (YACK-ee). The Navajo are the largest in the US and Canada, with 170,000 still able to speak their language. Just for the record, the trail you hiked on is the Grandview Trail. If you do any other trails some day, make sure to bring water. Going in without water on a hot summer day can actually kill you. You seem to have responded to the Root Beer float the same way lots of Europeans do, since it reminds you of medicine. An alternative would be a Coke float. You'd like that. The four people who died in the canyon last year probably did so due to a flash flood. We hear stories all the time about flash floods out in the area you're in, and people underestimating the ferocity of them. People have been slammed into the rocks in the slot canyons like you walked through, knocked unconscious, then drowned, if they weren't already dead from the rocks. The thing that makes them so dangerous is that it rains ferociously miles away, then the flood waters rush through dry riverbeds, and into canyons like the one you hiked, and just like that, they're dead.

Rented a speed boat with some friends years ago, and water skied a slot canyon in the shadow of Navaho Mtn. Magical. A storm formed up top, then crashed down on us like a lahar, as we raced it back to the marina. The storm won, tossing our boat around, lightning exploding all about. Terrifying, but also magical. What a place. Top 10 in the world, to me: beautiful geography, warm fresh water, sunshine with a daily quick storm for heightened entertainment, right here in the USA, with its 1st world quality. Also in my Top 10 is the urban version, kayaking on the Chicago River just west of Lake Michigan, in a man-made canyon.

So glad you enjoyed the Page area. I lived there for 20 years and there is so much to do there. Lake Powell is one of a kind. Camped at Lone Rock Beach so much that I can't tell how many times. Best thing about living there was when the weather turns bad or the wind starts blowing hard you just go home!

Excellent coverage of the area, I would also recommend hitting the North Rim as well, it's a little bit closer to Page than the South Rim. And on the way there you cross the Navajo Bridge where you have a good chance to see some re-introduced California Condors (the largest land bird in North America). I've lived in Page for the last 4-years, moved here because of the amazing desert views and proximity to so many great parks & monuments.

You're in my neighborhood now. Going south Wupatki National Monument is my favorite. People lived in the volcanic ash from a recent explosion 700 to 800 years ago. Oak Creek Canyon is a good trip, but very crowded. If you're a skiier I hear Snow Bowl is open. While there don't overlook the subalpine and alpine vegetation.

At some point lost to history, someone was the first person ever to see the Grand Canyon. It's amazing enough when you have some idea of what you'll see when you visit it. But over ten thousand years ago, someone encountered the canyon who had no idea there was anything there. Imagine what that was like. Ask yourself how those big chunks of wood got stuck so far above the ground in the slot canyon. That's why it can be dangerous to be in there when it rains. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us!

Yes, staying safe with common sense is important because the weather can change dramatically very quickly. With the narrow drainages and heavy rainfall it could soon become a river so be careful.

As you know, there are parts of the Grand Canyon without guard rails. Everyone is told to keep 6 feet away from the ledge but there are always people tempting fate by going closer. I even saw French family where the father was on one ledge, directing his wife and kids on another for a picture. All I could think of was, one misstep and one or the other are gone. Flash floods in those regions are no joke. It doesn't take much.
