Brodie, thanks for the coverage. Clearly, moving to Glendale wasn't a good idea, but I think this all comes back to former Suns owner Jerry Colangelo. He insisted America West Arena be constructed for basketball only and it occupies prime real estate downtown. If that arena had been built for both hockey and basketball, the Coyotes would still be there and would be thriving (along with the Suns). I'd love to see a more detailed story about this aspect of it.

Think about how much money the other owners in the NHL have poured money into the Coyotes to keep them afloat for the past 15 years. My assumption is the reason the league is brokering the deal and taking a 20% premium is to pay back all the money to the other teams that have propped up this franchise.
@sampicano
@sampicano 2 ай бұрын
I have some harsh truths to mention, not to kick you while you are down - just some obstacles and realities that need to be addressed in order to actually get a future NHL team back in Phoenix. Winnipeg waited 15 years for a new team (1996-2011) I get that Phoenix is one of the top ten largest cities in America (10th - 4,845,832 population). I also realize that Houston (5th - 7,149,642 population), and Atlanta (6th - 6,104,803 population) are larger than Phoenix and also don't have NHL teams - those are the cities in the South Phoenix is competing with to get an expansion team. I personally feel a 2027 or 2028 date is impossible as of today. Phoenix has no arena. - The starting bid for land starts at $68.5 million (therefore, the closing bid will be MUCH higher) The renderings proposed were for an area, practice facility, hotels, restaurants, a casino etc. - the price tag for the arena is approximately $500 million - the price tag for the entire district was approximately $3 billion The parcel of land for auction - North of Loop 101 on border of Scottsdale Road has: - no existing infrastructure - no water rights - no sewage system built - no road access Therefore the total cost to build will ACTUALLY be higher than $3 billion - you still need to build sewage systems, roads, and acquire water rights...those were not included in the $3 billion proposal. Between 2013 and 2022 the Arizona Coyotes have lost more money than any other team in the NHL - $115.2 million in losses. The Arizona Coyotes are a net loss team since 1997 - meaning the team overall LOST money over the past 28 years - they didn't generate money. As of April 2024 Alex Muerelo's net worth was estimated at $2 billion. - land $68.5 million - arena $500 million - district $3 billion - PLUS YOU NEED ROADS, SEWAGE, WATER RIGHTS....so not $3 billion - actually quite more than $3 billion..... - plus you need to BUY a expansion team (probably $1 billion minimum) The last NHL team to sell was the Ottawa Senators for $950 million - the Arizona Coyotes are allegedly being sold for $1.2 billion. So....$4,068,500,000 Four Billion, Sixty Eight Million, Five Hundred Thousand - would realistically not be enough money to build this district. How is a team that lost $115.2 million dollars ever going to recoup those losses??? The team was overall at a net loss for 28 years - so realistically how many years would it take to recoup $3 billion? One of the lower valued teams - Columbus generates about $30 million a year in profit. $30 million x 100 years = $3 Billion $30 million x 135 = $4,050,000,000 Still not enough to pay for the district and expansion team.... So Muerelo is NOT the answer

@@sampicano I was going to post this comment on Brodie's "hot take" video but I feel him having a background in journalism really helps vis-a-vis a The Hockey Guy (who I also like to watch) but tends to be very conservative and overly cautious in terms of feeling he can't say/comment on something unless the person involved concretely says something officially. When the Yotes released that "we're excited about our new arena" after you started getting insiders saying stuff, he took that at face value when we now know this has virtually been a done deal for at least the past few weeks. THG made a video about how he recieves tips from people who work/(play?) on teams that later turn out to be right but he won't report that stuff. I think a reporting background allows you to discern what you can confidentiy comment and/or share your opinons on without having to wait for 100% PR confirmation. There's a line between "hot take" say uncomfirmed stuff just for clicks and "take whomever's directly involved word for it unless they say otherwise." I think there's a middle ground that allows for speculation based on FACTS (either publicly declared/available or confirmed by trusted official sources behind the scenes) even if they contradict what has publicly been (which is often just PR spin) and Gary Bettman and the NHL have a long track record of publicly saying stuff that they end up contradicting lol

This was an interesting read but the issue I have is that it assumes Muerello's resources when in fact no one here has access to his portfolio. Clearly he has made his fortune by knowing how to make money in whatever enterprises he invested in as businessman. There are many avenues a billionaire can secure to acquire funding for big projects and though I'm not a finance expert, I don't wish to speculate on things in which I have zero access to actual data which would be related to the totality of Muerello's resources. Trying to do so opens the door to the Dunning-Kruger Effect. As much as I can appreciate the effort of this presentation, it needs to be taken with a grain of salt as no one here is Muerello's accountant, finance advisor, business partner, investor, or an attorney, to know if he is or isn't the answer from a financial resources perspective.

What of the Utah Grizzlies? There have actually been two minor league teams by that name. The original team was founded in Colorado as the Denver Grizzlies in the old International Hockey League in 1994 and won the championship in their inaugural season but had to leave right afterwards when the Quebec Nordiques became the Colorado Avalanche. Restarting as the Utah Grizzlies in 1995 they initially played at what's now the Delta Center until a purpose built arena that served as the primary hockey venue for the 2002 Winter Olympics opened in 1997. The Grizzlies won their 2nd consecutive IHL championship in their inaugural season in Utah, the deciding game of the 4 game sweep of Orlando setting a then minor league hockey attendance record when over 17000 fans packed the Delta Center. When the IHL folded in 2001 the Grizzlies were one of several teams admitted into the lone remaining AAA level minor league, the AHL. They suspended operations in 2005, after which a different ownership group bought a dormant ECHL franchise and the 2.0 version of the Grizzlies were born.

When the Whalers left Hartford and became the Carolina Hurricanes Chuck Kaiton, the voice of the franchise on radio since joining the NHL in 1979, moved with them, remaining as the play by play announcer (almost always working solo, as Vin Scully usually did) until a few years ago when ownership lowballed him on a contract renewal and opted instead for a radio simulcast of their TV output. Come to think of it, John Forslund also relocated with the team from Hartford and remained in Carolina until taking his present job with the Kraken in 2020.

But unlike the situation with the A's, apparently the NHL will not allow the Coyotes nickname to follow the team and there is at least an option for Arizona to get an expansion team within 5 years if they can get the arena issues straightened out. Unfortunately, these were not options offered to Oakland by MLB. In hindsight, if MLB had offered those two options to Oakland I tend to believe it would have offered at least a measure of hope to A's fans.

That's a good and proper attitude to have right now. The trouble is I've never been THAT impressed with the totality of the Coyotes' fanbase in Arizona. It seems to be rather small by comparison to other cities which could be an issue but Phoenix is a big city that's growing so that geographic appeal is still there. Any new franchise will be conditional on the absolute construction of a new arena in a logical location which must be everything that the Glendale arena wasn't. The blame for this mess that's been a 28-year unresolved problem goes all the way back to '96, when the Jets' owner at that time decided to move to Phoenix without a secured arena deal for his already struggling franchise. That move should not have been approved in the first place at that time without a new hockey arena secured in advance.

I think Bettman doesn't want to lose the large Metro Phoenix market. If Meruelo (or another group) can build a new arena within the 5-year window, they'll get an expansion team (west) along with Atlanta (east).

I'm happy for Salt Lake City. I wonder if the deal will include the retaining of the Coyotes name for the state of Arizona though. If that's not a part of the transaction then a new franchise for Arizona would have a different name. Speaking of names....will the Coyotes be branded as Utah or Salt Lake City? Given the Jazz' branding I'll bet on "Utah"....Grizzlies would be interesting especially when they would play the Boston Bruins which would create a "Battle of the Bears" matchup. Though I must admit that I prefer "Yeti"...like the Seattle Kraken it's a name from myth that has a nice relationship with all things cold. Utah Yeti rolls off the tongue quite well. Let's hope they will develop nice uniforms for the inevitable re-branding. As for a possible new franchise in Phoenix, I do like "Roadrunners" very much as a possible name if "Coyotes" isn't redirected back to Arizona, which is possible because the new owner may want to secure the Coyotes name for throwback merchandise purposes in Utah....or not. That part of this deal will likely be revealed immediately. I also like the "Fighting Saints" for a Phoenix brand. Phoenix Fighting Saints...imagine fans showing up to game wearing halos with a black eye. I say this because I always thought that's what the Minnesota Wild should have been named in the first place, so for reasons that are entirely selfish, I'd like to see that name on an NHL team. "Javelina" is a name I also like for a new hockey team. It's a regional reference to a very real animal that can be ferocious. Imagine the fans attending games wearing pig noses and oinking when they score a goal. It could happen...😜 "Falcons" .....AZ does have Falcons. Phoenix Falcons has a nice a ring to it and would create an opportunity for a great menacing mascot to scare the annoying children in the stands. "Gila Monsters" or simply the Phoenix Monsters (using the Gila Monster image) the possibilities of unique fan participation/interpretation of this name would be limitless....the home games would be like Halloween party. I can already see a group of fans sporting Boris Karloff masks revving up the crowd from the centre ice upper-decks.....The Phoenix (Gila) Monsters could sponsor blood bank drives by having its players dress up as Count Dracula welcoming the blood & plasma donors...all for a very noble cause.

@@jdsmith1740 Yeah we see "collateral damage" in ways we just haven't been able to before even if an action is justified (like Israel going after Hamas) because social media allows us to see the actual real life costs of such actions in real time (emotional, mental, physical) that it wasn't before (even during Israel's last conflict in Gaza in '21). If social media was as big as it is now back then, the US would've pulled out of Afghanistan and Iraq much sooner just due to public pressure. It's why they don't want to put boots on the ground in Ukraine. Thrashers fans going viral with emotional Twitter/X threads or KZbin videos would've put way more pressure on ownership and Bettman to exhaust all avenues (hell, they let the Coyotes play in a 5 000-seat stadium this time). Even the way the media are covering this is much more empathetic to the fans losing their team.

Excellent video. I don't think I could have enjoyed this type of analysis when the Hartford Whalers moved to North Carolina. Coyote fans have been gutted by this move. Even if a new arena is built in Tempe, I don't believe it will be supported in the way the owner thinks it will. The fans are angry and will not forget this. The communities in which they have played will not forget the unpaid taxes, and all the other bridges this owner has burned.

The real issue has ALWAYS been ownership. It’s like the ownership groups, over the history of the team, either play dumb or genuinely forget that arena leases or ownership comes with the team. It’s almost as if they buy a team just to add to their resume (specifically coyotes ownerships) and don’t have the liquid cash to pay employee/player salaries and arena leases/upkeep. I don’t know, this is pretty common with all sports, but it got a HUGE microscope over it, simply because the team was located “where hockey doesn’t belong.” It’s a tough pill to swallow but it seems like the Utah ownership is actually interested in becoming a gold standard franchise, maybe even in spite the naysayers on the location.

I can see that Utah sports anchors know very little about NHL hockey. You're getting the Coyote players, not the sweetheart expansion draft gift Bettman gave to Vegas (which I don't think the Kraken were given). Coyotes are rebuilding and could be a really good team in a couple of years, but they'd be lucky to make the playoffs next season IMO. Nonetheless, I predict 41 sellouts at the Delta Center next year.

I feel awful for the Coyotes fans, but for the health of this franchise, a move to Salt Lake City, is by far the best move forward. Salt Lake City is a very nice city and there is a ton of support for hockey in this region and over the border in Wyoming. The players will enjoy the region, if they love the outdoors, and honestly they will love the fanbase. It's a beautiful region. It's great to see another team coming to the Rocky mountain region.

Where else could they play? They could play at the Maverik center, which is better suited for hockey, but Smith don't own the Maverick center and does own the Delta center. Not hard to understand why he wants hockey in the Delta Center until new stadium is done. As for the state fundings, the state is IMO very interested in funding the billion to the MLB group because it solves an issue that has for years plagued the side of Salt Lake that badly needs attention and sits in a state of nothingness. What to do with that area and what it would cost to revitalize the area gets solved with only an investment of a billion dollars. Sounds like a lot but not in comparison what it would cost to do something if they had to do it. Probably a no brainer investment for the state of Utah. A new home for the homeless?? LOL. As for the Arizona fans, can feel the pain of losing your team and hope that your people can eventually get their stadium situation settled, be ready to go when the green light for expansion happens and do it. This should give your ownership time to get in order for next round of expansion and feel you get it. I say good luck to Salt Lake as we will find out for real if Salt Lake is in fact a hockey town. I am personally more excited for MLB, but that is just me.
