Also, you both work very well together and have a fantastic onscreen chemistry. The review itself was great and inspired my wife and I to immediately order the core set. I totally disagree with the "you will not play this as often as other boardgames" argument. Changing decks, changing investigators ... I played the first campaign (well, level 1 and 2, with different people) like 30 times and at least scenario 2 is still totally interesting and has very different outcomes every time. Since scenario 1 is more of a "how to" and very simple that one might get boring at some time. But most people I'm playing with play this game over and over again.
@КириллДектярев8 жыл бұрын
VictorSteiner Yeah, replay value is very good in this game.
@0oldschoolgamr08 жыл бұрын
I agree. I have logged 46 scenario plays to date. Even the first simple scenario surprises me often due to Encounter card timing and the options in my hand. Given the long tail these LCG games have, I expect this to be my most played game soon. (Currently, that is Space Hulk: Death Angel, with 120 plays).
@StyxTBuferd5 жыл бұрын
It depends heavily on the person. If you're the kind of person who likes to rebuild decks and play scenarios with different investigators and player counts, it's very replayable. If however you're here for the narrative and/or you're not much of a fan of building decks, then it's very limited. I'll also add that you basically need two core sets to do any interesting deck building. I found with one set some decks were just not that interesting to tweak because the options were so limited (1 class card per coreset, but up to 2 can be included in a deck). Some classes really need two ofs for certain cards, Mystics in particular (Shriveling and Drawn to the Flame).
@stacie_everdell4 жыл бұрын
@@StyxTBuferd Well said! I was the latter and as such very disappointed. I’m not interested it running through the same exact scene sequence simply with another character, I want a whole new experience. But in order to get that, you have to shell out more money. I bought this game largely on this review and it’s ranking among solo players but unfortunately, I will be selling my copy.

It is a neat game. I've really enjoyed playing through the first three scenarios although I felt like the 2nd and 3rd scenarios were just trying to impress how tough things are rather than threading things together into a story. It's like what happened with some of the later boxes from Lord of the Rings: The Card game (also from FFG) when you get to Numenor. Some friends have played the first big box, Dunwich Horror, and they said that the scenarios in there were much better and it felt like a better thread of narrative. I genuinely think this is a better alternative to Mansions Of Madness and Eldritch Horror as it's a more condensed experience and you get to tailor your character more BUT I think that the opening scenarios could have done with a bit more to them. By no means does this mean that the game is screwed because of this, as it has already taken over from Netrunner for a couple of friends, but I'm looking forward to seeing more of what lies ahead. I just hope that they don't make more scenarios 'hard for the sake of being hard'. I know that the failure aspect of the game is something you should expect with Cthulhu, and I enjoy that (and the way the bag works with the tokens), but just something that niggled me. Oh and seriously FFG...put a bag in the box. Don't make people go out and buy one or use a cup. Doesn't half ruin the theme when you have a terrible tea mug holding your tokens.

My one major complaint with this game after the first expansion cycle is that while the base game comes in a nice box, all of the subsequent packs have been in those little plastic pack-container-things and it makes getting all of the specific parts of their scenarios together just a bit more of a pain than through the boxes. Still less than the hours of set up for regular Arkham Horror, to be fair

So I played this game with my brother & we completed the core set campaign so here are a few flaws we had with the game. they might not be flaws to everyone but just a few things SU & SD didn't fully claim. 1st: the game is hard. I only played with my bro so maybe more people makes it easier but the game is really hard. 2nd: the "chaos tokens/bag" is very unforgiving & this is a game where every action is important so pulling multiple failures can be quite discouraging. 3rd: this is a big one. the amount of customization for the factions is actually quite small. only about 2-3 cards have an "upgrade" and each faction has 3-4 powerful cards to buy with exp. All in all, the game is quite fun but you really only want to play through it once or twice. Especially since there is alot going on and you may not know exactly what to do but it's helpful to know that going in. Have fun!

Does it have the "rich get richer" problem where if you do well in a scenario, the next one is that bit easier and so on, but if you do poorly, the next one becomes next to impossible etc etc? Or do they recommend you adjust the difficulty levels perhaps based on how you succeeded in a scenario (could be based on the XP you received)
@thomascremese123510 ай бұрын
The base game is a good introduction to this beautiful card game. To me (and my group of players) it shines if you have the time to go through the different campaigns + expansions that add a lot of depth to deck building and in-game combos. The game is quite hard and failure is part of it - but it's always a laugh. However, over time this does become quite a big and expensive game and all the boxes do take quite a bit of shelf space, you've been warned!

I often think about this game. While playing it, I felt like success had less to do with good deck building/decision making than getting lucky with the encounter deck and modifier tokens. I really can't overstate this: you have almost no agency in this game. If you think you'll like this game because it's a strategic deck builder, you might be wrong. If you think you'll like this because you like Lovecraft, you might be right.

Just bought the game and some negatives 1) Cannot play 4 players unless you buy a second copy 2) Even if you play 2 players you cannot play any 2 characters because there is not enough cards when creating the starter decks. 3) Be carful when pulling the components out of the cardboard as they want to peal (not that big of a deal) 4) There is no "chaos bag" included in the box All these things do not really impact the game, but for a $70 box I think that this is un acceptable. Unless you plan on spending $140 plus a bag this game is way over priced.

While it's better to buy the campaign box and all 6 mythos packs in one swoop, sometimes that's a little too expensive, or imposible due to stock shortage.
