What irony in the statement: "it isn't Biblical." Friends, the Catholic Church compiled that Bible! If it weren't for the very bride of Christ you would have no Bible to talk about or measure any argument against. Too much fiction. Observe the arguments Kreeft makes about divorce. Christ does not have more than one bride. Get Real. "To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant!"
@jawojnicki9 жыл бұрын
This is where the Protestant arguments against Catholic teaching begin and end for me. They are using a book which was (at least the New Testament) written by Catholics (the only denomination of Christianity for the first 1500 years of Christianity) and a Canon which was closed about 400 years after Christ's resurrection , to argue that the Church which wrote the book and closed the Canon teaches things that are debunked by its own book! Oh wait, I forgot that they're usually using the new improved Martin Luther version of the book, because he somehow got divine permission to omit about 7 books from the Bible 1100 yrs after the Canon was closed. Where did he get that authority again? I love how they reject oral tradition as well but forget that there was NO New Testament written tradition for almost 400 years after Christ.

I also am fond and sympathetic towards Dr. Kreeft because he has been on both sides of this great issues. Quite so, Dr. Kreeft was a born-again Calvinist for much of his youth. He spent much of his time trying to disprove Catholic teaching, and in the process fell in love with Jesus all over again. Even if Dr. Kreeft or any Catholic, for that matter, is wrong, this sort of seeking and studying, at the very least, cultivates an open mind to invite Jesus, even if He comes to correct.

Take note of those who hold heterodox opinions on the grace of Jesus Christ which has come to us, and see how contrary their opinions are to the mind of God… They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they do not confess that the Eucharist is the Flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, Flesh which suffered for our sins and which the Father, in his goodness, raised up again. They who deny the gift of God are perishing in their disputes. -Letter to the Smyrnaeans, Ch 6

ALL HERESY! God is One! God is Invisible. God alone is eternal. Jesus said that he IS the Truth. God is NOT messy-human beings are because we are SINFUL. It is God's Kingdom, NOT Rome's! As the Truth and the Spirit of Truth, it is God who is the teacher. The Trinity is a mystery, the abuses of the Roman Catholic Church are not. There is no hierarchy with God, as God alone is the Supreme Judge of the World-and no respecter of persons. God alone is Holy. One cannot demonstrate any so-called Apostolic succession-though the Church is free to lie and claim it as truth. One becomes a believer in and follower of Christ, through faith alone. No sacrament is required for salvation, and Christ and the Disciples gave us 2 sacraments: baptism (the believers first act of obedience) and communion-which is done in remembrance today of what Christ accomplished in the past, until he comes in the future. ALL those who come to faith in Christ are "catholic", though the process of learning and sanctification can be messy. As for "dynastic", so the Church is all about power and wealth? Interesting... But it is God alone who is all-powerful while the Scriptures should be mined for their tremendous wealth-and the Scriptures testify of Jesus, not the Roman Catholic Church! (John 5:39)

I pretty much agree with that. The thief on the cross next to Jesus asked to enter Paradise, and Jesus assured him he would. It would probably be best though not to wait until zero hour. Once you are saved, redeemed, etc., then you need to walk the walk so to speak. Prayer, scripture, loving our brothers, and helping others, are the fruits of the Holy Spirit. I very much enjoy listening to Dr. Kreeft, though I must point out an inconsistency with another great Christian lecturer/writer that got me thinking. At around the 10:05 point of this video, Dr. Kreeft says that "You are your body, you don't have a body, you are a body." This wording contradicts with a popular C.S. Lewis quote who, when attempting to convince others that we have souls, said something along the lines of "your right, we don't have souls, we are souls, we have bodies." Anyone have any thoughts on this?
@jamiesoncannata901310 жыл бұрын
We are embodied spirits; "In Sacred Scripture the term "soul" often refers to human life or the entire human person.230 But "soul" also refers to the innermost aspect of man, that which is of greatest value in him,231 that by which he is most especially in God's image: "soul" signifies the spiritual principle in man." CCC 356. Remember, the body and soul together constitute the entire human person. Though there are present in Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory the souls whose particular disposition towards The Lord has merited their present condition, the entire human person does not suffer in Hell at present, languish in Purgatory at present, or rejoice in Heaven at present. Only after the Resurrection shall the whole of the human person, and the fullness of his humanity, enter into his eternal reward or eternal destruction. Additionally, I would recommend reading the entirety of Article 1, paragraph 6 in the Catechism. May God bless and keep you.
@BeyondtheChaos19 жыл бұрын
Lewis didn't actually say that. It's an incorrect association.

Yes I went from born-again to non denominational and kept coming up with differences often times subtle but differences nonetheless. "The bible alone" as many taught doesnt make sense. Then I heard Ravi Zacharias(no catholic) say, dont look "at" Jesus but look through the eyes of Jesus and see the world as Jesus sees it. When you look at his life and mission, the apostles their apostles and the early Church. It is Catholic (one) Then when you learn what the Church actually teaches DONE

St Ignatius of Antioch "Make certain, therefore, that you all observe one common Eucharist; for there is but one Body of our Lord Jesus Christ, and but one cup of union with his Blood, and one single altar of sacrifice-even as there is also but one bishop, with his clergy and my own fellow servitors, the deacons. This will ensure that all your doings are in full accord with the will of God" (Letter to the Philadelphians 4 [A.D. 110]).

+Christine Czyryca Why don't Catholics believe God's testimony? 9 We accept man's testimony, but God's testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. Concluding Remarks 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Have you denied yourself and taken up your cross? That is how you follow Jesus. In fact, I think it is clearly not the Catholic Church. I think the title of this video should be The Authority of Love, which is exactly what Luther would have espoused. I fear the Catholic Church precisely because I think it has lost touch with the image so excellently outlined in this video. I also fear most protestant churches for the same reason.

I'm not sure about you, but Pope Francis is a boss and a great image and embodiment of love, the person that was handed down the authority of the Church. Reason he picked Francis as his name was primarily because his focus was to rebuild the church, just as St. Francis of Assisi was told to do. The Church hasn't lost its body, it is that it may have lost the love in its parts - there will always and only be one Church of the fullness of truth, the Catholic Church!

Except that Love for some means totally different things. Take for example the 30k protestant denominations. They all claim to follow Christ/love, however they all come down to different truths, opposing truths. How can that be?
@shotinthedark9010 жыл бұрын
When you ask, How can that be? are you interested in the mechanics of denominationalization (lol, what a word), how it happened historically, or are you asking how difference in ancillary doctrines can occur without a difference in fundamental doctrine? Because my answer to the third would be that (excluding false Christianity), the difference in truth claims is not a "coming down," as in a fundamental discrepancy. The difference in truth claims is a "coming up," or a discrepancy in the outgrowing expressions of a more fundamental concurrence. In other words, we can all agree on the seed of the matter, but even being the same kind of tree does not mean we all grow exactly alike. Ideally, denominational structure would spark civil dialogue in and among an overarching community of believers, which is actually a sign of vitality. In practice, it doesn't happen that way, but I think that's mostly because christendom is overrun with false-christians (protestant and catholic alike).

shotinthedark90 "but even being the same kind of tree does not mean we all grow exactly alike." It's not a matter of differing in small things.... denominations differ from resurrection belief to no resurrection, to Christ being divine and human to just being a prophet, to how one is saved.... It's not small matters. "The Church is the pillar and bulwark of the truth" 1 Tim 3:15 Truth is one as Christ is Truth. The Holy Spirit does not tell different things to different people. The Holy Spirit does not have a multiple personality. Prior to the Catholic Church establishing the canon of the bible in the late 300s AD People were guided by Truth by the Church otherwise one is calling Christ a liar when He said "Not even the gates of hell shall prevail against it." In fact, it was the guidance of the Holy Spirit through the Church that produced the bible, otherwise you would be reading dozens and dozens of heretical Gnostic books all claiming to be inspired. It was the Church that gave the world the bible and it was the Church that kept the truth all along and it was Christ's church that has always maintained that same exact truth without changing it. The only Church that has done that is the Catholic Church.

There are clear limitations to what can rightly be called Christian doctrine, that's true. But I think those limitations are discoverable and practicable independent from papal authority, for example. Anything that properly falls under the Christian classification has to adhere to definite truths, but that does not mean all beliefs, and it certainly doesn't mean the belief in this or that pope. We should test all spirits. Just as two people can be of one accord, even so much as a husband and wife, and yet not agree on all matters, so two denominations can be of one accord in Christ while maintaining points of contention. I mean, you get that internal to any family or body of believers anyway. It might be the case that the congealing of like-minded believers into isolated clumps does a disservice to Christianity in general, but the contentions are not proof of illegitimacy. I do not discount that a Catholic can be a true Christian, I discount that being a Catholic makes you a true Christian, just as I would discount that being a member of any kind of protestant denomination makes you a true Christian. I agree that biblical canonization was guided.

(2) has God's authority to teach what the scriptures mean. God in the person of Jesus Christ instituted one church and one church only, (no breakaways), with his apostles and he said of that church that it would remain until the end of time and that the gates of hell would never hold out against it. He also gave the church all earthly moral authority and He told them that He would send the Holy Spirit to inspire and to guide them. That is the church that became based in Rome after 3 hundred

Yes, as is the Bible, guided by the Holy Spirit. Not sure what your point is? The catechism is an explanation of teachings of the Church. Christ sent his apostles to go out to all nations teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matt 28 19:20 . Again look at the early Church that Christ left, not what renegade men have created, taken from the Church to fill their own beliefs. All denominations are splintered from the One

(1) First of all, thank you for your opening comments - quite unexpected given my blistering attack on your theological mindset, but I felt the need to state what I believe is the truth. How in the name of goodness is the CC's mindset geared towards getting rid of non catholics? The days of burnings at the stake are long gone you know! Pope John Paul ll, during his pontificate, decreed that Protestantism IS a path to salvation for its followers, so you are wrong on that. The CC itself will not

It makes no difference of what I think, or what you think. He is the successor to Peter. And upon this rock I will build MY Church. This is from the Lord himself. I had nothing to do with it.

Your animosity and bile are not the hallmarks of how Christians should talk of other Christians, although by this point in our interactions Wayne I am well aware you do not regard Catholics as Christian. You have as usual for your posts thus far made a sweeping statement and engaged in bigotry in lieu of any constructive or nuanced debate.

You just follow your own interpretation of the Bible. But even the devil can quote Scripture for his own purpose. That's how he tempted Jesus in the desert. He took verses from their context just like you do. Just because you are quoting Scripture does not mean you are imparting truth.

The authority of the catholic church? what authority? As far as I know and I bet all Christ believers admit that only God has the authority, the ultimate authority. A church is only an organization of a group of Christ believers. The more 'sophisticated' a theology, the more it brings to theory only, not making people get to know God or come closer to Him and sense His love, power and law.

(3) years. That is also the church that Protestants say is wrong. Did the Holy Spirit inspire them? I think not! So where do the other so called Christian churches come in - yours included? Martin Luther removed 6 books from the bible and he was about to start on Revelation when his contemporaries told him to leave it as he had already done enough. Where did he get the authority to do that? Not from God that's for sure. Our blessed Lady, the mother of Jesus and the mother of us all, (as He gave

(2) have to answer for anything as it was God in the person of Jesus Christ Who established the church. The wrong doers who have infiltrated the church since the earliest of times are the ones who will be held accountable. Jesus said of the church, "The gates of hell will never hold out against it", and of course He was right. The church has withstood many onslaughts throughout the centuries, not the least of which was the so called reformation and still it emerged as strong as ever and will

How do you know everything Christ told St. Peter and the Apostles? Do you think that *_everything_* Christ taught and told to his Apostles made it into Sacred Scripture? Perhaps you might read John 21:25. Nevertheless, it actually is quite clear in Sacred Scripture that Christ intended his Apostles to spread the gospel to the entire world: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” -- Matthew 28:19-20 In the ancient world, this could not be accomplished in a single human lifetime, nor multiple lifetimes. It is obvious, by reason alone, that Christ intended his Apostles to pass on their commission to others who could take it up, and in turn pass it along to others (Apostolic Succession). But if reason alone is not enough...it is also clearly spelled out in Scripture: "I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I have delivered them to you." -- 1 Corinthians 11:2 "So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter." -- 2 Thessalonians 2:15 "Command and teach these things. Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Till I come, attend to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophetic utterance when the elders laid their hands upon you." -- 1 Timothy 4:11-14 "You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also." -- 2 Timothy 2:1-2 Finally, it is not enough to have the Gospel known everywhere throughout the world at any one particular moment. The Gospel has to be proclaimed across not just space, but time as well. There HAS to be a teaching Authority that guards and protects the Deposit of Faith, and authoritatively teaches it to new generations. Furthermore, any honest reader of the Bible would acknowledge the fact that Christ set aside Peter with a unique position of leadership and authority amongst the Apostles.: "And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” -- Matthew 16:18-19. Christ later extends the power of binding and loosing the other Apostles (Matthew 18:18), You might also note that Christ deliberately changed Simon's name to "Peter" (which means "rock" in Koine Greek ): "He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said, “So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas (which means Peter)" -- John 1:42. Peter is also referred to as Cephas, in Paul's epistles. Cephas is a transliteration of the original Aramaic word "kepha". The only time where we encounter God (Jesus) changing a name in the New Testament is in the case of Peter -- only Peter and no one else. Whenever God changes someone's name, in the Old Testament, it is a specific indicator that the individual has a new role to play, and a harbinger of momentous events in the Economy of Salvation (e.g. Abraham and Sarah). Cheers, John

His authority was given to Apostles and Bishops were authorized by Apostles and Peter was the chief Apostle and was the Bishop of Rome. The Church was operated from Rome so the Bishop of Rome is the “papa” of the Church. Just like Moses was a father and was head of Gods people....Peter became the head. Pope means papa.

You said not to put words in God’s mouth but nobody is doing that. We have the records showing what happened. Furthermore...we do many things that Jesus didn’t say verbatim. How about praying to Jesus or the Holy Spirit? He never said to...but we do. Ever think of that?

Well, as Jesus said to Thomas the Apostle. You believe because you have seen. Blessed are they who have not seen, but believe. I am happy if you have seen Jesus, and you are very blessed. I just don't think I have to have a vision to know Jesus personally. Every Christian needs a personal and public relationship with Our Lord. Private, personal prayer and meditation, and public worship. Please do not assume I am not going to heaven because I am Catholic.
