not hey didnt. All other devices, there is no way to directly connect to a device without port forwarding and/or using a VPN. The only "easy" way is if you still keep a middle man involved, in which case connecting through arlo's servers and this defeats the entire purpose of DIRECTLY connecting to the device. This is what you and those who complain about this do NOT realize. SMH

What do you guys think, am i being too critical? Is this meeting you expectations? I don't doubt that things will improve down the road but as of right now, i'm disappointed. And on a side note, i'm being told that you can setup a FREE VPN on some home router. So please excuse what i said in the video about NEEDING to pay for a VPN connection. That doesn't apply to all.
@Stealther5 жыл бұрын
The local network or VPN requirement is for your security. If they didn’t require it and all your videos were hacked off your local drive you would crucify them. The thumbnail and video classification is definitely something they should fix and it can be done pretty easily I would think.
@craigk61545 жыл бұрын
VPN as a service is what you are refering to when you think of NordVPN, or EasyVPN. These services are for allowing you to secure your comnection from everyone and control were your internet source is from. VPN or Virtual Private Networks as a technology is simply the idea of securing all data between two endpoints. Generally it does this by creating a secure tunnel between the two devices and and routing all traffice to the remote point. Some routers have VPN server funtions built in but not all. There are also other ways to setup a vpn with software on a remote device. I have it on my unraid server, for some commectivity. You can also do it fairly cheaply with something like a RaspberryPi and Open VPN. So with that understanding a vpn service is simply a company that has setup a bunch of thise remote secure endpoints to obfuscate where you really reside. Using a vpn software with you own equipment makes the secure connection, but still keeps all of your internet traffic sourced from your home. It should also be pointed out the setup for port forwarding dynamically allocates the port for access. This randomization help mitigate potential attack vectors bynot making it predictable. There is room for improvement certainly, but beyond providing proper thumbnails i am not sure how much better it can get. We have to remember this it intended to completely offload the need for Arlo servers. I would also like the ability to run continuously recorded videon to it and default my storage location to local access instead of having to change it everytime.
@moialder2524 жыл бұрын
I made a reply to give you another perspective. I'll reiterate it here though that, what Arlo has done is allowed expert level feature that most consumers and regular users will find intimidating. What they basically are allowing is the user to connect directly to the device without going through them. No matter what device/brand/etc, the process in doing that is not user friendly. But its a major benefit because you no longer rely on having to connect to a middle man so if their servers are down or they go out of business your devices still operate as normal. Now this next part is what you should confirm for me or others-----does the camera system still work as normal without any internet? Meaning motion detection recording and then recording to the local storage? Does all of that work normally even if the camera is offline? Obviously you no longer will get notifications on your phone. BUt if the answer is yes, then with their new feature of being able to directly connect to the device, then arlo has opened up their system to truly be an offline system that works and still being able to retrieve the videos via being on same network or port forwarding.

1. Setting up VPN on modern routers is very easy and free. 2. Port-forwarding is typical to make your internal networking available publicly and Arlo is correct in advising it is a security risk because opening things up to the internet inherently does increase security risk. Arlo could absolutely use UPNP to bypass manual port-forwarding, but it can be argued port-forwarding is very easy to setup in all modern routers (you don't need to contact your ISP unless you don't know how to work with your router). Eufy uses UPNP and carries the same security risks; all internet connected devices do. Eufy homebase connects to Chinese servers regularly… no one has researched what on earth it is sending out. Besides these two things, Arlo have released a pretty crappy/half-polished feature. Disappointing? Or expected?

These are good points. -Setting up a vpn is incredibly easy... there's really no "setting up" at all. -The vpn comes with an app (for mobile, etc.) -Setting up port forwarding is easy. -Worrying about your privacy when you're looking into *WIFI* enabled "security cameras" that talk about/have people wanting to share their security video camera footage with "social media"...is retarded - completely stupid. I'd like local storage. But there are so many of these "security cameras" with all kinds of privacy and security gaps (overt fails in concept) around I can hardly find anything other than a trail camera to consider. Man... Thanks for the video @Steve DOES. I'll look into the Eufy. I was considering the Wyze...because it's cheap, but obviously... same issues (I'd wanna disable, physically if need be, the wifi and all that stuff).

Yes. I was going to say the same thing as @John Doe. Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe It’s typical for real/traditional security camera setups (IP cameras) to require either port forwarding or vpn to access local network cameras/ equipment remotely. Otherwise Arlo would have to use their resources to allow customers to access their own footage. IMO it’s refreshing that Arlo allows some form of allowing customers to manage their own video footage for free unlike Ring and other competitors but I can understand the complaints about the somewhat buggy software.
@justrbloke3 жыл бұрын
1. Setup maybe free, but a VPN is not. 2. You do need to contact your ISP if like mine, they control all ports either all open or all closed, massively increasing security risks, a less than clever idea from a security company, who has the option still available with their lower level Pro products to deliver everything as a Cloud based service, as seen in this video. Totally crap "feature set" from Arlo, appears to be driven solely as a recurring revenue idea, on a product already being sold at top dollar, rather than something coherent with the rest of the product suite and loyal customer expectations. Have gone from an NPS score of +100 to -100.

Why exactly do you think this should be free? Do you have any idea what things actually cost? Building space, software engineers, hardware engineers, network engineers, managers, supply chain, servers, backups, power, insurance... You're lucky that you get the option to buy the older cams with 7-day streaming and use local storage with the new cams at all. Other companies that offer "free" are getting their payback by selling your data, whether it's your video, your info and preferences for advertising, or other. If you're willing to give that up, go for it. The rest of us will respect the engineering hours that provide the product at such a low cost.

Normally I don't comment.. but I gotta say I totally agree with you. I'm very dissapointed and I have decided to return my set of 4 ultra cameras. Here is a list of things I disliked: - motion detection is bad. Postman was recorded first time when he arrived to the door. What about the huge van arriving infront of our door?! Sensitivity is 100%. - wifi range is bad. Cannot stream 4k image if camera distance is >15 m (wooden house). Sometimes no connection at all. Live image loading takes 10-15 s - you cannot connect cameras to your home wifi which is probably a lot better than Arlo "base station" - there is 10-15 s delay in live view - cannot access local videos via router VPN. It was said in Arlo forum this might be Android app specific problem. - no thumbnails for local videos until you open the video - 180 / 155 degree image is not being "straightened". 120 degree image has basically no fish eye effect - no option to use night vision only. Usually b&w image is sharper - app HMI could be a lot better - company seems to be super greedy.. first make the product, then sell it. Not other way around.

I bought a 1tb card because the VMB5000r6 (Ultra 4k) model says it supports up to 1tb. Why should have to eject the micro SD card every 30 days and delete the videos just so I can view them on the app?

Lot's of new routers have VPN options. For example many TPlink routers give you access to an OpenVPN connection which is super easy to set up. Then you simply download the OpenVPN connect app on your phone and turn the VPN on whenever you're away from home. The general "port forwarding leaves you vulnerable" argument is... misleading. Lot's of devices use UPnP which auto port fowards (assuming your modem/router support it) so there are always ports "open" into your network
@justrbloke3 жыл бұрын
Then Arlo are doing a really crap job of explaining this to their customer base. Targeted at a consumer market, how many of them do you think are networking experts? Show me any literature from Arlo that explains this process in lay terms, and actually produces a functioning result. The strength of their product has always been in it's "plug and play" capability. This stuff is doing major damage to the Arlo brand.

Since you’re no longer using the subscription, how are the notifications for motion working?

They do seem to pop up faster now that it’s not having to analyze the clip and categorize what the motion is.

My free trial just ended and i have to say i agree..there remote access of the videos is cumbersome and not easy for a person not tech savy and not determined. 1. Thumnails - what he says is true annoying 2. My router supported VPN so i had to read my router manual and set it up 3. I had to configure it on my phone 4. its slow and have to download all the videos 5. YOU cant give someone else access to the videos...i found that SUPER ANNOYING I been fairly happy with their cameras, not a huge fan but i wasnt expecting much from wifi cameras. But the subscription at 10 a month is pricey in my opinion, it should be like $5 or less for a small camera system.

I did my research but I got taken by Arlo. Consumer Reports recommended them. After 30 days it is basically a notification on motion. Step up Arlo and earn the money your customers paid for base station.

As an IT guy, I understand why Arlo did what they did regarding remote access to local storage. Security is paramount, and that means that the level of convenience you experience will be reduced. - A VPN is understandable, but like you said, that has a monthly fee associated with it unless you setup your own VPN server at home. Brain up and muscle through it, or pay the money. - Port forwarding can be problematic unless you happen to use your own cable modem. I know for a fact that Spectrum locks down your modem, and can even access it remotely without your knowledge or permission (bye, bye, security). I happen to have my own modem because I run my own DNS/ad blocking servers, and Spectrum doesn't allow you to do that on their hardware. - Another option is to set up a rudimentary web site that can serve videos via a browser. It probably won't be nearly as polished as a vendor-supplied app, but you'll be able to view all of your videos. Slap password access to it, and it's just as secure as anything else out there (which really isn't saying much when you get right down to it.
@popmonkey3 жыл бұрын
the VPN they are talking about is _not_ a paid VPN that you use to hide your IP. it's _always_ free. check openvpn for an example. (you are correct - it's very tricky to set up on most routers)

Another major feature lost is the ability to manually trigger recording. The older Pro models still have this capability, but the new Ultra does not, unless connected to the Arlo Cloud. This makes no sense, for a semi-pro system supposedly designed for independent commercial use. You absolutely should be able to manually trigger recording anytime you like. Another major miss from Arlo with this product set.

Oh man, I think I dodged a bullet with Arlo! Thank you so much for this informative vid. I just saw the Eufycam 3 vs Arlo Ultra comparison video....I bought the Ultra system but have not opened it yet. I think I’m going to return it for the Eufy since it has the easy on the fly storage viewing feature on the app that Arlo dropped the ball with and doesn’t have yet.
@moialder2524 жыл бұрын
you still connect through Eufy's server as the middle man. So basically its not a direct connection to the device. For consumer grade basic stuff yea its fine. But if eufy's servers are down or they go out of business, your device is nothing. Arlo eliminates all middle men and you connect directly to it so even if arlo's servers are down you can connect to the device to see footage (assuming it still works normally without arlo servers being needed)

@@moialder252 - with a severely reduced level of capability and a much reduced feature set, without the option of maintaining a service level still available with the Pro series, as seen in this video. ie: Arlo could do it if they wanted to. It’s still not working. From experience Arlo products are basically in alpha test status. Their features rarely work and they never seem that worried about fixing them. It’s a great concept ruined by a rubbish product. Just have a look at all the issues posted on there forums. You were lucky to have the clips show up. Most of the time they either don’t sync with the cloud or they don’t show up locally.

Reason i came here is i have the older cameras and now wanted to but another camera and they all say wifi... my question is will the camera be in the same UI screen as others but on wifi? I just paid for the subscription for simple use $12 per month unlimited cameras inst a bad price in my eyes. its simple to use but now im think i8 should be looking on sites for the older cameras... I also use a external hard on the base station to record the videos for a back up copy... Another question I have i haven't had account for about a year but i did notice they still store the videos but cant see them.. I thought they said in the policy my data is mine and not anyone elses so why is my data stored with out my access to it.... making my data theirs! sounds like a lawsuit to me whos with me!

@craigk61545 жыл бұрын
I think this a bit harsh. Lets start with connectivity. If the person supporting this is at all familiar with connecting back to home without a vpn the port forwading thing will be pretty easy. They also already know anytime something of that nature is less secure. Mainly because that device and app is exposed to the internet for everyone to see. At that point you are depending on how well it is secured on your local device. Vulnerabilities are constantly being found so even though nothing is known today something may be found later. The VPN connectivity is speaking directly about using a vpn to your home router and not a service. That is a free item most likely. I have test out a vpn that uses my home server and that isnt working. It is likely a routing issue and i am working with arlo support to fix figure it out. It isn't perfect, but they have openly stated they are working on thumbnails. I would expect it will be resolved eventually. You seem to gloss over the fact that this is completly subscription free with any of the newer cameras. This effectively turns the base station into a NVR that you can attach as many cameras as you like to it

I guess i had bigger expectations from a company that's top in it's industry. Eufy and Wyze have had this capability for years and Arlo announced this feature over a year ago. I just expected something a little more polished coming out the gate. I have no doubt that they'll put out updates down the road to improve the experience.

Yes JJ. I have been using Arlo products for years. I have 3 Arlo Q cameras 2 Arlo Pro 2 cameras and 2 Arlo Pro 3 cameras. The only real break I have experienced was the VMB4000 base station problem that occured recently. Other then that my useability has been rather good. Forums don't represent the significance of issues versus satisfaction of users though. Generally people that are happy do not go to a forum as long as there are no issues. Also the issues you tried to bring up dont really relate to what is stated here but seem to be your own rant.

Craig K I guess when I bought the Arlo ultra I just had the simplistic expectation it would do what was outlined in the documentation and on the box. Maybe that’s just to much to ask these days. Then on from that experience not one feature they have added works. The latest being the local storage disaster. It plain does not work.
@iShareTruth4 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, this is about another feature that gets turned off when you don’t pay for the subscription. I have 2 Arlo Ultra cameras and today my free cloud subscription expired. As you know, rich notifications, video thumbnails are gone when you don’t pay for their subscription and use local storage. Also, as you pointed and I experienced, remote access to my local footage is not possible unless you do port forwarding in the router or pay for a VPN service. I tried port forwarding and it works but it sucks because of all of the above (no thumbnails, etc) Now, since my subscription expired, my wife cannot see local storage from her device, she gets the non-rich notifications but when she click on them to see the videos in the local storage they are not available. She cannot also add the base station -and that is primarely the reason why she cannot see the local storage. After 1 hour and 22 minutes of waiting for customer support to answer, they told me that second users -or invited family members cannot see the footage unless we pay for the subscription -they can only see the live camera feed. I will definitely DON’T recommend Arlo cameras and I will consider another brand for my future camera upgrades/expansions.
