Fifty three years ago, Arlo couldn't get enough singing from the audience. Now, he can't prevent the audience from signing (chorus, and just about word for word).

Love this song. And even after 53 years it still makes me smile and laugh. Great song and great singer. And he still sings it like he loves to sing it with everyone and get the sing along. Any idea of how hard it is to sing that song and play that guitar?

It's Thanksgiving 2021 and my annual tradition lives on. Arlo after dinner. This was the first album I ever bought and I still love it.

I saw Arlo several times in the 70s and 80s, often touring with Dave Bromberg. I feel both happy for the memories of those times, and also sad that there won't be any more. Congratulations and best wishes to Mr. Arlo Guthrie, a great musician and American legend.

NO Thanksgiving is complete without this song!

This may be his last live performance of Alice's Restaurant - he had to stop doing live performances recently for health reasons. It's still as good an American Thanksgiving song as any, maybe the best, along with being a superb anti-war song.

I didn’t know that about Arlo and thanks for posting. I was introduced to this song by my brother and it’s an institution…as relevant as ever.

great song and I love the way it changes length depending on the occasion. anything from 14 minutes to 20+ minutes. It is addictive.

I had the great pleasure of seeing Arlo just a few yrs ago singing this and other great tunes of his up close and personal, along with his son and daughter. He was amazing doing the entire Alice's Restaurant. I just heard of his retirement in 2020.

I’ve seen Arlo a bunch of times I didn’t get to see him last year but I also didn’t know that it was his last year performing.. He’s not doing it anymore 😢

“Never is a long, long time”. So is “anymore”. I don’t count Arlo out of it just because he needs to take a break. Folksingers rarely hang it up permanently. Either way, the Music lives on in the hearts and voices of “The Folk”.

@@alanwhite9142Did he contract his father’s illness? I was always afraid of that. I think he was too, like the sword of Damocles hanging over his head

Nearly always somewhat different, or at least “enhanced”. Arlo feeds off the energy of his audience, like any self-respecting folksinger does.

Agreed! And we should ALL be angry as hell about what a lame job was done withdrawing and leaving hundreds of our people behind unnecessarily.
