I was passing through Eugene Oragon , many years ago. I didn’t have any money on me because Oragon didn’t have any ATM’s yet. So me and my friend stopped by the Salvation Army that serves meals. While waiting outside, we had seen a train pull into town & people had jumped off and came to this place. Before the dinner, everyone sat through a church service. A lot of torn & taddered people all around. When it came time to sing , everyone sang this song, I closed my eyes, it was as good as any church singing could sound across the land, but a place full of Hobo’s! God was there. Love this version. Amazing Grace was written in 1772 and published in 1779 by an Anglican clergyman who had been in the slave trade. He learned his lesson and changed his life. Thus, we have this song. At first it was recited in church and then it was set to music with about twenty different melodies. The version we usually hear today was written in 1835 by William Walker. It is said to be perhaps the most well-known folk song around the world.

That is the magic that is Arlo. His Daddy's son. He's getting older now. It concerns me to no end who will carry the torch for the future. All the folk artists from the 50's and 60's have either died or aged out of performing. I realize it's a different world now. I just don't want to live in it.

I can’t help about remember 16 years ago, November, a young boy playing this for me with his harmonica in a dark time in a hospital ICU waiting room as he waited for his grandfather to pass. Amazingly, Arlo spoke in this video what the young boy knew then. In a world so troubled a small smile or hug or a song on a harmonica could make a difference in this world to a troubled person. Amazing Grace.

I got to meet Arlo last fall after a concert, he was exactly as I imagined him being such a down to earth person with an authentic liking for everyone that was around. I now have an autographed LP in a frame hanging on my wall which is now my pride and joy...even over the unopened Roy Orbison LP! What a great person and family he has!

I have a great story relevant to now, from the late 60s... In the late 60's Vietnam era, Genda's fiance' and high school sweet heart was drafted and sent to Vietnam. They planned to be married as soon as he got back to the States. 2 weeks after he was deployed, he was killed in action. Grieving and pregnant with her beloved's child, she had some paperwork to fill out in Washington DC, which just happened to be in the middle of a huge anti war demonstration. She looked around, feeling so lost and overwhelmed... seemed like the timing couldn't have been worse. There to handle some of her late finance's Vietnam death documents, she felt intimidated by the crowd demonstrating. Just when she was at her lowest point, some hippie guy caught her eye and left the crowd to talk with her. He said, "You just lost someone dear to in the war, didn't you.." And she tearfully nodded. He embraced her and held her while she wept. Turned out that hippie was Arlo. She's never forgotten his kindness to her in her darkest hour. Aril's always been like that... been there for others. Glenda is on life support right now, her son all grown up, by her side and I've sent this to her family to play by the bedside...We hope for a miracle... Love you ADG. XXOO

He is a product of his Father's humble upbringing. Woody Guthrie along with leadbelly and many others resonated with the workers, those struggling. Arlo lived in the shadow of Huntington's Disease that took Woody's life. Bob Dillon along with so many others had Woody on a pedestal. Bear a thought for Arlo as Huntingon's being heritdatry lived with the fear of inheriting the faulty gene. Majorie, Woody's wife and Arlo 's mother wrote the preface in a book I have called"Living with Huntington's disease". They as a family fought the demons. Thank God it appears Arlo skipped the faulty gene (50-50%) and has lived out to be able to share his talent with us today. God Bless.

I met you, Arlo. We sat together with you at a Holiday Inn back in 1980 when you told me that the name of Jesus meant nothing at all when it was compared to what you have believed once about JESUS. Like when you and James Taylor were writing a song together and every time that Name was written "look down on me Jesus help me make a stand" I reminded you, Arlo.. when you told me that you could have just said "Asparagus" and it would have been the same as if you had written JESUS I asked you "What if Asparagus was playing tonight? Not "Arlo" but "Asparagus" who would have shown up ? you agreed back then. Or did you? It took us 4 hours of sorting this all out according to common sense. We did hug each other and agree in the end.. and I guess you may have gotten it? Amazing GRACE? Why would any of us need that?

I had the pleasure of seeing him in a little club called Bogarts in Cincinnati (a few hundred people at the time and 2 bars) in 1978. He closed the show with this, and everyone in the place was on their feet singing along. The show also included a full length rendition of Alice's Restaurant, which he didn't do very often back then. An awesome time was had by all there. As others have said, a national treasure that everyone should see.
