I love that at the beginning, Jive, Dslyecxi and Chris are all proper procedure, calling out their maneuvers - and as the mission goes on, they go silent and begin to communicate telepathically. And then Jive falls asleep on the keyboard a couple of times. :D

Is it possible for you to do a video of a ShackTac mission from start to finish? What I mean from start is maybe how you guys order people joining TeamSpeak and joining the server, along with fighting over who takes what place. I feel that it would be very interesting, but I can't speak for all your viewers. Is this at all possible?
@axelord4ever9 жыл бұрын
***** _'From start'_ would include the plt then squad briefings plus a whole lot of stuff that can be interesting but that would clash with the rest of the video. From what I've been told ST doesn't divulge logistical information much. Everything that is internal stays so. I don't know about ST but from my time in a similar group (inspired by ST's _Serious Fun_) spot selection was always a problem. Attendance was usually spotty and someone had to message the lazies to corral them in. Very hectic. The mission briefings were somewhat chaotic but eventually got things done. All this I think was supported by the small-ish size of the group, something I do not think ST has any problem with. With the option of simply rolling someone out and bringing in a replacement if they get rowdy, I don't think there's much problem with having people on point and ready to be serious.
@-ZETA-9 жыл бұрын
One interesting facet of this video, coming into it after being with the infantry during the mission, is the disconnect between what you see here and what was actually happening to the guys on the ground. You get glimpses of the situation during LZs, or through radio or local chatter, but just how fluid or dire the situation was, especially at the end, is kind of hard to perceive. It's not a bad thing, just something of note that I find interesting.
@Qarlo999 жыл бұрын
Zeta I saw Xenon's "PTSD" and MrH's "Close" videos of this operation . . . Do you know of any more?
@-ZETA-9 жыл бұрын
Qarlo99 Those are the two I'm aware of right now.
@dslyecxi9 жыл бұрын
Zeta Most of that disconnect is from editing - there were plenty of times we were orbiting or sitting out of the AO listening to the radio, able to clearly understand what was happening on the ground. There were IIRC two times that just be listening to the radio we spooled up and headed nearby in case we were needed.

Have you guys considered using the UAVs that are now more prevalent in Arma 3? I often wonder how much of a benefit to C2 having a UAV would be in a typical MP game. From a viewers perspective, that was one of the more visually appealing missions to watch; the insertions were VERY cool to watch. Would be interesting to see more "SF" style uses of the MH-6s; insertions onto target roofs, into target compounds etc at night, not only from the perspective of the pilot, but that of the passengers.
@dslyecxi9 жыл бұрын
Matt Colman UAVs aren't terribly interesting in A3. The MELBs have copilot seats that have access to a very nice sensor system, that by comparison is quite interesting to use. We'll be using that a lot more in the future for sure.

So I just streamed Arma to my big flat panel in the living room for S&G and flew the little bird around bit. I cannot lie. It was unexpectedly awesome (I sat pretty close). There was something about the AH-9's control panel approximating the size and distance from my eyes as it would IRL that tried to trick my brain into believing it was real. It was a bit of an unusual sensation. I nearly got vertigo flying around. I'm sure lots of people have tried this but I never had. Anyway. it was cool. Your videos are cool. Dslyecxi, I'm working on creating an air transport team for a community I recently joined. I think it's safe to say you're a huge inspiration, and I am taking advantage of some of your training materials to help educate my pilots on proper procedures and such. However, save for the art of flight videos, I have not found very may good materials on formation flight and group landing zones. Do you have any written materials on these subjects that I could share with my fellow pilots, so as to better prepare them for scenario situations that they may have to face in the near future?
@dslyecxi9 жыл бұрын
Forester155 Aside from TTP3, not currently. I do plan to do some further Art of Flight videos on subjects like that, though, so perhaps those will help in the future.

***** Thanks! It'd be fantastic if you could talk about techniques used in this video to avoid air collisions. I can pick up some basic communications between pilots, calling directions and order into landing zone, but I can say for sure there was more than one landing that had me grinding my teeth as I watched your main rotors inch closer to the tail of the other aircraft. Thanks for the response, and thanks for keeping up these videos. You do a stellar job of keeping me grounded and motivated in my flying endeavors, both in ArmA and in real life. I hope to join you and the rest of shacktac in the field of battle some day. Good luck!
