Arma: Gold Edition - First Impressions and Review

This time I'm taking it old-school with "Arma: Gold Edition." This game is really cool if you're an Arma fan.
Summary starts at 9:30, but I recommend watching the whole thing as some exciting things happen and I talk about the differences between this and the other Arma games.

Just *amazing* how far along the graphics came in the 5 years between Op Flashpoint and ARMA 1 (I always found the ARMA 1 Campaign to be MUCH tougher than Flashpoints 3 campaigns too)

Wich will you pick? Arma I or Flashpoint? I already finished Flashpoint, I never played Arma I. Why Am I asking this? It's because I had Flashpoint for free on steam and bought Arma for 1€ and I wanted to know wich I should download first :P

Definitely Arma Gold Edition. It is much more polished than the original Operation Flashpoint, which feels very old in comparison.

Gamespy shut down. That's what happened to all the Arma servers. Arma 2 got servers back eventually.

The graphics without bloom looks better than Arma 2. Bloom in Arma 2 was horrible. With FDF sound mod and some AI mods this is still a very decent milsim.

With the latest beta update, it runs much better than Arma 2 for me. It's pretty cheap right now, so I'd recommend buying it now if you have the money.

You cannot. The Servers(Gamespy) has been taken down. This was a few years ago

I'm not sure about US servers, since I live in Europe. Anyway, if you want to pick up Arma, I'd recommend Arma 2 (or really 3, but that's in beta-still good though) instead. Arma Gold Edition is the most system-intensive game.

I don't know the specifications, but Arma is very processor and graphics card intensive, especially the early versions. On my setup, Arma 3 runs better than Arma: Gold Edition or the original Operation Flashpoint (now called Arma: Cold War Assault). The early games were pretty poorly optimized. I play Arma 2 with around 50-60 FPS in big towns, and I have an i5 3750k processor and a HD7970 graphics card. Usually laptops are worse than desktop computers. Why don't you post your specifications?

No, it's more system intensive than Arma 2. If you don't have a high-end computer, I'd recommend either Arma 2 or Arma 3 on low. For me, Arma 3 runs better, but I have an Intel i5 3570K and an HD7970.

I'd you're short on money and can't afford Arma 2, I'd recommend this game. Otherwise, I'd go with Arma 2 everyday. I am pretty sure buildings crumble like paper in gold edition.

It does not support the DayZ mod. DayZ was developed specifically for Arma 2. It has been ported to Arma 3 by others, but to my knowledge, never to Arma 1, and it's unlikely to happen, since it probably makes use of many new commands introduced in Arma 2 and Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead.

Yes, but try the Arma 2 demo as well. If you can run that, I'd recommend that instead of Arma gold edition.

Can't believe how great OFP and ARMA 1 still looks and plays. But beaware ARMA 1 was the one which you need a fairly powerful rig to run more than Arma 2 & 3 in fact. I work in Fed Leo but I build highpowerd PC's and laptops as a hobby I have a degree in or I minored in Electronic engineering and own a side business where we do high end data , security and audio visual systems for business, corporations and homes from you average single family, apts to some very high end homes IE Celebs or some very rich people. I don't only game now my wife along with 2 of 3 daughters are MD's. They all work separately my wife has her own practice and staff and so on, one of my daughters practices in Japan. As my wife is from Japan and all of my kids were born and raised their as their all about the same age. So I built or build and upgrade their respective offices machines and systems etc. I can run this on my i7960 dual 6970's 32gb ram To my I7990x or i75970x rigs both are identical with some small differences dual R295X2's 64GB ram EVGA SN P2 1600 PSU 6 6TB harddrives and the other with 20 6tb drives and 5 optical drives. all my desktops are liquid cooled with custom built cases made by a friend. I only use the best parts so my rigs cost $5k-9k+ and laps $3k to 5k+ the rule is you buy cheap you buy twice. On my personal rigs I use Asus 32-50in monitiors and use Nakamichi, Klipsch or SB sound systems 5.1 and 10.1. And on my caseless test bed rig which runs 12 6970's and 2 Cisco 3000 watt PSU's I use for bench mark fun with like minded friends. LOL pardon the rant NOT showing off or bragging I am a total electronics freak I use voice typing and can talk shop all day. Sorry for going off topic but yeah ARMA 1 is still great go to Armaholic.com for mods and patches to make the game even better. I still (when I have the rare time) play ARMA 2 as A3 is still too new yet and mods like ACE and CBA are not there yet imo and I put so much time into Arma 2 starting over again with A3 with all the mods, addons and patches ehh I'll wait oh and for you Dayz fans? Forget it the modder who made it ditched it. Its pretty much dead now. ARMA had only about 5 zombie mods and were they never popular until the COD crowd came on to the Arma sites spouting all kinds of crap with ARMA fans. Those kids do not get it, Its a military simulator period. Heck its not even on consoles as it has so many controls and even more if you run mods which most user made campaigns and missions need. And even tho A1 needed a hefty rig to run it? A2 and A3 need pretty beefy machines as well as everything is open world and everything is AI run nothing is scripted from a bird to a pilot they all run on AI only sim in the world thus far that does. Its why SP and coop is what modes most people play. Unlike COD, BF and MOH which are just twitch games that depend on MP to keep people playing till the next years game comes out. Man those games are for OCD suckers. They are ripping people off every damn year just like consoles which are PC's just weak UN-upgradable ones they make you buy a whole new one when the new one comes out. And heck my ram chips cost more than a Ps4. Not a hater now but I hate seeing people get ripped off. Thanks for sharing the video! Brings back memories.

Gamespy, the server "manager," I guess, has shut down. So you have to direct connect via IP. I think BI put up a server browser of their own online, but I can't find it at the moment.

Core i5 6500 3.2GHz 8GB RAM SSD Drive 120GB GTX970 4GB Samsung s34e790c ultrawide monitor I thought I would be able to play ARMA 1-3 and the original Operation Flashpoint (it's also my favourite FPS) but I hear that ARMA 1 + 2 and OF are not supported in the monitor's resolution. Can't believe it! I might just have to jump into ARMA 3 straight up but was really looking forward to playing OF's successors in chronological order.

you can definitly play it in lower resolutions, if your moniter supports under 1920x1080 resolutions, if not than windowed mode is always an option

@@sillyriver4486 if it can run CS:GO on medium graphics it can definitely run Arma 3 on medium-low (note, Arma 3 never excedes 60fps for some reason and I have a GeForce GTX 1080TI Strix, which would def run it at 120FPS min. CS:GO runs for mr at 400FPS usually, War Thunder Air Realistic Battles at 220FPS so yeah) GLHF me fren and have fun out there! o7

Yes, the problem is that it is poorly optimized. If you compare the newer Arma games to the old ones, they run better because they're better optimized, even if the graphics are ten times better.

No, the game doesn't suck. Sure, the aim is weird compared to other shooters and there are arguments for and against, but it's not a bad game. The Arma games, including the original Operation Flashpoint, are some of the most amazingly customizable games ever created. JohnAJ I have overreacted yesterday because I was so happy when i got the DVD and then I was very disappointed. What the hell should I do in this game? I spawn in a base with other guys and then we are flying without stopping and we find no enemies.
