Manic panic hair dye vs Arctic fox | Best purple hair dye?

Hey guys so i dyed my hair purple back in February and i have had some mixed experiences with the dye that i used and how long its lasted so i thought id share my experience with you!
The manic panic hair dye barely lasted 2 washes in my hair and faded out to a strange brownish purple colour where the Arctic fox stuck around for over 2 months.
Id say manic panic was a giant waste of money and i would not recommend it at all,

This makes me feel better because I thought I was the only one that had this problem. I dyed my hair with manic panic purple haze too, and it faded super quick so then I touched it up and it still faded very quick. I had the same exact issues that you had. i used the manic panic one and it didn’t even last 2 washes. i was so disappointed. i also used purple rain super diluted and it lasted 2 months, i ended up purposely fading it out to change. i even have to be careful because it stains my virgin roots too 😭

Girl the same thing happened to me, I used a blue from manic panic that faded after maybe 3 washes and than I used their 40 wash stuff which got all over everything even after several washes and only lasted maybe a dozen washes at most and then I used a purple from them that lasted maybe 3 washes, but before I ever used them I used arctic fox and it was the best

I alway use Manic Panic on my hair, and it works really well! I tried a lot of brands in the past years but none worked like it. I’m sad that this didn’t work on you :( The green one I did an year ago stayed on my hair for months and it didn’t quite fade, but maybe it is because I let the colour rest on my hair for like two or three hours before rinsing it

I have good luck with all of the manic panic colors except purple! Any of their purples i cant get them to stick but ive done their blues and orange and red and those are great

I used Purpke Haze the last time I dyed my hair. I even toned it down with conditioner to get less saturation. It lasted nearly a month, with little fading. My sister can't use it though. May just be different hair.

I have very long and thick hair, and the other day I used Arctic Fox Ritual. It's a FANTASTIC dark wine color and it is very even and pigmented, and I used one bottle with some conditioner. It's helpful to know that it will last, and I even have some leftover dye in the bottle!

I think it might be specific to manic panic’s purple formula. It’s really hard to get any cosmetic formula to be vegan, cruelty free, and purple. I’ve used some of their reds and those lasted about 1-2 months on me.

I don’t ever see people with my natural hair tone color so I can’t ever get a picture of what my hair would look like if I dyed it. As far as direct dyes go, I SWEAR by Arctic Fox. They haven’t been around long but they’re dedicated to the process of making a quality dye. 1. It stays the longest of all the brands I’ve tried (I’ve tried a lot). 2. It smells great and is basically a conditioning treatment so you can leave it on overnight if you want and your hair will feel better. 3. It’s vegan and portion of the proceeds go to help animals. 4. It is TRUE TO COLOR! It is the best to mix and make unique colors and they always look how they look on the swatch at level 8 or higher. Lower levels it will still tint the true color.

I only use Arctic Fox! (actually have it in my hair right now) I used their Aquamarine and it was the most beautiful color, I couldn't have asked for anything better. Sense it was a green-blue mix I was scared about when it was fading but it still stayed really pretty until I was at the beach and then it got sun bleached plus salt water attacked into a sea green. I still didn't complain though, their dye is what I live by and I don't think I'll ever try anything else

I've heard such amazing things about Manic Panic (I even had some of their makeup back in the day) so it's disappointing to hear it didn't last too long. 2 years ago I was going for like a teal blue color and tried voodoo blue... my hair turned neon green. Let it fade(less than a week and two washes) and Tried to put one of their straight up blues over top to see if it would be more of what I wanted and ended up with a slightly more emerald color. Again it faded this time within 3 or 4 to a gross minty looking color. I've used joico intensity since I started using bright colors and never had it turn out the wrong color, even over other colors. Plus it's cheaper for more product and smells like cherries. Last Christmas I was looking for a neon green and joico doesn't make it. The only thing I could find locally was manic panic and I figured it couldn't hurt to try... used electric lizard and the color ruened out so awesome... but my tips were white after 1 wash and the color damn near gone 2 weeks later with only a slight tinge of green near my roots... will NEVER use manic panic again.

Arctic Fox all the way! Many years ago (I’m 41) when I was a teenager, I used Manic Panic. It was the only thing on the market back then. Thankfully we’ve made advances and there are much better things on the market like Arctic Fox!

Yikes one wash! That’s sad ! I thought manic panic was supposed to be amazing . I haven’t tried either brand but I had heard great things about them both. I love the 3 minute miracle conditioner! The center of your hair looks great. My hair loses color quickly which I hate! I lways wanted to try to dry my hair a fun color but it’s not been an option . Manic panic lasts in my hair for a few months and stains, everytime i tried artic fox, I’m lucky if it lasts longer than a week. Thats just my opinion! :))

Interesting, I'm on nearly 2 months with the Manic Panic Shocking Blue. Got about 3 weeks true to color, then really interesting purple and pink streaks. The Arctic Fox colors I've used only got maybe 2 weeks before being nearly gone.

I really love manic panic, I have tried many others and they haven’t worked very well so I’m sorry your experience was bad. it has worked really well on my hair whenever I have used it. Granted I haven’t tried the purple and I do get permanent , but I have tried different blues and reds from them and they have lasted quite I while. But a tip when getting manic panic is to actually purchase their permanent colors. Personally they last up to like two months. But if you are just wanting to try a color semi will work fine

I’ve never dyed my hair before. For whatever reason I’m super attached to my natural hair color. Lol I’ve always wanted to go a little red though! That color is really pretty but it didn’t last at all! Such a bummer. Wow that red is still really vibrant! I dyed my dark brown virgin hair with manic panic’s ‘vampire red’ in the amplified version. I left the dye on for about 2 hours and it came out really great. As it started to fade it tired less pink toned but slightly more orangey. I used colour safe shampoo and washed my hair in very cold water. The dye lasted for about a month after I added I bit of dye to my conditioner a few times. I want to try purple rain on my dark brown hair though!

I've always used manic panic in highschool, they have two different formulas (the bottles and jars are different formulas) the bottles are the amplified formulas which last longer, I've had some colors last for 6 months. I use manic panic when I want to switch colors, but ill use Arctic fox when I want the color to last even longer. So I use both depending on what I want the color. But I prefer the manic panic since I change my hair a lot

I used rockabilly blue from manic panic and LOVED the color but it NEVER stopped bleeding or staining anything 😩 I couldn’t touch my hair without it staining my hands even after a month and it never stopped bleeding in the shower. I switched to arctic fox and have never had that problem.

I accidentally used ultra violet, misleading pics on that website, didn't want blue at all, but even with bad-for-colour shampoo it took a longggg time to fade. When I used plum passion, also by manic panic, by the 3rd month it had faded to pink, not quite pastel, just a nice pink, cause it is a more pink kind of purple shade.

I've used both and had the same experience. Manic panic washed out immediately and arctic fox hasn't even faded in 2 months! Manic panic purple is the only one I've had an issue with, the rest have been fine.

I've used Manic Panic for years on my short bleached hair. It is vibrant when first applied and fades nicely for me. I get compliments even when it is nearly gone as it becomes a nice pastel shade. You have to comb it through after applying and then when you wash the hair use a gentle color protecting shampoo and don't leave any conditioner in too long as that will pull the color out. I like the way the cream consistency stays where it's put when applied. Purple haze does not stay as well as some other colors so I mix it with ultra violet which has better staying power. Shame you wasted your money and were unhappy but if you like the Artic Fox go with that. Do be careful with bleaching though and make sure you do a deep conditioner in between coloring to save your pretty hair.

Glad I saw your video because I was prepared to what was coming lol I've read some comments about ppl using Manic Panic and how even when they sweated the color was fading... but I had already bought mine lol I used Vampire Red. It's such a nice tone, BUT indeed, when I sweated, I noticed my fingers were stained. I even stained my clothes when I fell asleep at work and put my head in my arms LOL Today I washed my hair, and in the moment I wet my hair the color was washing, and I think everything washed off with the shampoo, so I think it's a good option only if you wanna try how a color looks on you and what tone to ask when using a permanent color :p I ordered from amazon an Arctic fox and it looks it arrives today, so i'll check it and see what happens. BTW a friend of mine had already recommended me already Arctic Fox because it achieved a very nice blue tone on a friend :)

I feel like I've had mixed luck with either brand. For Arctic Fox their blues almost immediately washed out on me, I used Poseidon and Aquamarine and both didn't last at all, washed almost entirely out after I rinsed the dye out and it was gone entirely after a second wash. Vigin Pink I could get to last up to a month but it would be pretty faded by the end to where I had "pink blonde" or very very light pastel pink left. Purple Rain lasted by far the longest, that crap never came out of my hair, I tried everything and eventually had to do a bleach bath on it to try to help pull the color out without causing too much damage, still never came out so I just had the let it fade. Once it did fade though it created a lovely silvery color that was perfect to dye a pastel pink on top of. I've never used their red dyes but I've heard great things about them. For Manic Panic, I've only used their Hot Hot Pink so far because I fell in love with the color. The only other pink dye that looks closest to it that I've used is Raw in Fuschia Fatale (which is very hard find now, I think maybe they went out of business or maybe they don't sell to the US? No idea) and Splat in Pink Fetish which isn't great for my hair, is super runny and stains like a mofo. Like I've not dyed my hair in YEARS and it's still stained a light to medium pink from that damn dye. I love the color but omg that stuff is awful. So Manic Panic Hot Hot Pink was a great alternative. I dyed my hair about 5 weeks before a vacation and the color was still there, although faded, after the vacation, lasting a total of 7 weeks. Usually I wash my hair with only cold water but got lazy before and during vacation and after so I washed with hot water for about 4 of those 7 weeks. I also was out in the sun a lot on my week long vacation, almost the entire day which fades hair color sometimes. For reference this is my standard hair routine: I wash my hair with cold water every time I wash which is only once a week (although I recently switched to every 5 days instead bc I have a SUPER oily scalp and it was getting too gross around day 5) and just use dry shampoo (Batiste and Not Your Mother's are both great, I usually use the former around day 3/4 and the latter on day 4/5). My shampoo and conditioner are sulfate free (I've used Hask Beauty before and that one was good but currently I use Morrocan Oil and have been for about a year). I also don't use heat on my hair aside from blow drying on medium heat and if it's sunny I try not to stand outside in the sun too often since it can affect the color sometimes. My hair is lightened to probably a level 9 or 10 (I bleached it myself once and that's where it's a level 9 versus the level 10 that I got professionally done). Most hair dyes I tend to leave in for as long as possible. Oftentimes it ends up staying in my hair for at least 2 hours since it's semi permanent and doesn't have any harsh chemicals or developers in it. I just throw it up in braids or clip it in a bun and put a bag over it and watch a movie or something before I wash it out. Don't use shampoo when you wash it out and try to go at least 72 hours without washing again to help set the color and give it a longer life. Also don't rinse until clear. Ik it always says to, don't. Just rinse until you don't feel anymore dye in your hair, the color is most likely going to keep running and you'll wash all of the color down the drain literally if you rinse until clear. Hopefully my tips help someone out, but they might not work for everyone. Everyone's hair is different. Just bc this was her experience doesn't mean it'll be yours. Same with my experience. Plenty of people swear by either dye, you'll just have to try for yourself and see what works best for you. Some colors might even work fine in the line and others might not like my experience with the blue AF dyes. If someone is looking for a blue or turquoise dye but AF didn't work for you, try Iroiro, they have a good range of blues and I had to bleach those out or cover them with purple to get rid of them lol.

Thanks for your insights! It’s such a personal experience m when you dye your hair isn’t it. All we can do is share our experience and hope it helps. I’m finally back to blonde now trying a balayage while I still have it mostly dyed blonde. I found purple rain washed out to the exact colour of violet dream so it was like having 2 colours in one, though I preferred the lighter one so ended up switching to that in the end. It had to be bleach bathed out of mist of my hair after letting it fade for 8 months. My hair is black so getting it light enough for pastels just wasn’t feasible, I love pastels on people tho! Being blonde again it’s so nice to be able to wash with warm water, 😂 I always made sure the water was really cold so it would last as long as possible.

Manic Panic Blood red, and Manic Panic Rockabilly Blue are good ones, it took at least 15 washes with each for a starter. I dunno about the others, but those two worked for me. Plus I just came on here to see if Arctic Fox is good. Ima buy it now :)

Manic Panic definitely only lasts 2 washes for me and my daughter. A purple one & bubble gum pink. I bought Arctic Fox last week & it’s in my hair now, so we’ll see how well it stays. I have Electric Paradise in right now.

Ok so... sorry I forgot to update everyone! I’m horrendous at remembering things. Anyway, I put the Arctic Fox dye in after I conditioned my hair & let it dry (because I forgot to follow the directions on no conditioner). The color still stuck really well. Also, my shower knob is broken so 1/2 the time I only get scalding water. I also used shampoo with sulfate in it, which strips color faster than sulfate free. Basically I was 1/2 lazy and 1/2 wanted to put this dye through hell to see how well it lasted. That being said, my color did fade, but only noticeably after 2weeks. At that point it turned into a saturated pastel color with no patchiness & lasted over 4 weeks until it was at a pale pastel point where I would personally be bothered enough to re-dye it. Instead, I decided to bleach my hair to get it lighter so my application was less orange leaning (I was going from brown back to blonde & bought the dye to cover up that horrendous brass look for awhile). Even after bleaching and color stripping, some of the dye held on in the virgin growth portion of my scalp. I’d say it’s a win. As for the Manic Panic, that stuff faded within 3-5 business days & looked patchy af. I look forward to using the rest of my Arctic Fox & plan on buying more colors than the 2 I already have. I feel like it suited my purpose, and I got my money’s worth from start to finish. Never once was I unsatisfied with the application, color payoff or longevity. I can’t speak on any other colors except Electric Paradise.

this is odd because for me my experience was flipped. arctic fox’s purple rain lasted barely a week for me and manic panics purple haze has lasted me a few weeks now. i will say though that arctic fox is a lot like a colored conditioner in my opinion, it made my hair smell great and was very very soft where as manic panic was quite drying. manic panic also stains a lot worse that arctic fox.

I dyed my hair with Infra red I believe it was called and with bleached hair it stays vibrant for maybe a week to two weeks (I wash my hair about 3 times a week) And it like stayed kinda faded for over a month. I think it depends on the color because my red stays really long for temporary hair dye that’s supposed to last 6 washes

I definitely agree the smell of artic fox is amazing. I would make sure you look into the colors though because I used the artic fox orange and it was completely out of my hair in like a week. I have used the blue though and that lasted a bit longer

I've never used manic panic because I have always heard it doesn't last + considering how long and thick my hair is one of those containers isn't enough and I just thought it would add up to too much money after getting 3+ containers lol. One wash!? That's ridiculous. I've never seen artic fox in stores in the US. I think it's only online? Not positive. Glad to hear it smells good. I hate the chemical smell. Do you keep the dye in your hair longer than it's suggested on bottle? When I used to do crazy fun colors I always found keeping the dye in my hair for a couple hours helped it last longer. I have waist length hair and I use 2 bottles of Manic Panic.It doesn't last long for people who rinse it fast better to sleep with it. I have had mine last months. I would not do a review personally till i have had a change to use both and sleep over night for both applications. No sleeping with it in your hair does not ruin your hair. Another trick of the trade is to wash hair with dandruff shampoo ;p the color lasts long too

I had a similar situation to your experience with manic panic, however, I am not sure if my own hair color may have been an issue. I dyed the tips of my brown hair purple with I believe the ultra violet color, and I managed to get it to last about a week before my normal hair color returned. It did not wash all the way out, but its hard to tell that its even there anymore unless under florescent lights.

If you wanna prelong your colour save a little bit of the hair dye which mix with conditioner/ while you are shampooing your hair and it will renew it instantly! (Its a tip which works soo well)!!!

Ive loved manic panic for a long time. Ot always works for me. That being said.... It washes out of my friends hair after 1 wash as well. I used the atomic turquoise and I've had it over a month and ive washed my hair every day due to sweat from my workouts. I love arctic fox but and it does last longer but i dont use it because last time i did.... 6 months later my hair was still pink and wouldn't lift or wash out when i wanted to get to my natural blonde again

I am a hair stylist. When your hair is bleached it does not hold onto the pigment if your hair has been over processed. The healthier the hair the better it can hold onto pigment.

Best purple color I used on my light brown hair was Splat lusty lavender and it was beautiful but it was so bad on my hair manic panic purple haze made it soft but the purple didn't stay and made it a weird color but loved fuschia shock and vampire red. Haven't tried arctic fox but want to.

I really think it’s up to hair type and other factors.- I have the opposite experience. I have straight-ish dark stubborn hair that doesn’t bleach easily so I just leave it at like, a level seven orange and manic panic holds the best. Arctic Fox purples barely touch it but their aquamarine is nice

if it is more blue based than red it wont stick as well. Purple is finicky, it doesnt stick as well as some other colours. I use both products and purples i mix it a bit with other colors to help it stick make a custom colour.

Bleach your hair properly and lighten it enough!! Make sure you don’t put conditioner in your hair after washing out the bleach if you are dying your hair right after! I strongly recommend manic panic only if you use it the right way! If you don’t you’re going to turn out with a bad dye job like her. *Disclaimer* I’m not a professional but I have a lot of experience using manic panic and various other dyes.

Jeez take it personally or what, funny the Arctic Fox didn’t struggle and it was dyed in the exact same way. I didn’t lighten it any more. The colour turned out stunning when first done, it was the staying power that sucked. I do not use conditioner after I bleach my hair nor did I say I did. The dye job wasn’t bad, the longevity was. I worked in a hair salon when I done this and did it following their advice 😁 thanks for the feedback but maybe remember we are all different and will all get different results.

I loved the color from arctic fox, I used purple rain, but it never stopped bleeding. I'm talking for weeks my face, neck, shoulders and upper back were tinted purple. It's been 4 months and it has washed out with the exception of some very faded bits in the middle. But I sat it this limbo of weird brown, red, purple toned hair for a couple months.

The color was beautiful, but I'm thinking that was part of my problem was my hair hadn't tried to hold color before. I never had issue with manic Panic but if people read that it says longer you have it on the longer it lasts .I actually sleep with it in my hair. You do not wanna know how we dyed out hair originally Manic Panic solved that issue haha You should look into Olaplex to fix damaged hair.

Ravenn Weber I don’t have damaged hair, I used ultimate bond when it was bleached originally so same stuff. I had the manic panic in for most of the day, I’d sleep in it but not going to ruin my sheets when the Arctic Fox worked so much better and I only keep it in for 2 hours.

Manic Panic has a much better shade range than Arctic Fox, but my god is Arctic Fox world’s better. The odd thing is that Manic Panic stains EVERYTHING. It runs like crazy in the shower, it stains my shower and counters like nothing else, but fades so quickly from my hair. Arctic Fox by comparison is so easily to clean out of my shower and wipes right off my counters, but lasts so many washes. And yes, it smells great, like Grape Jolly Ranchers.

Only had this issue with manic when I blasted off my cuticle. There’s nowhere for the dye molecules to stick when that happens. It’s a larger molecule so it doesn’t actually go into the hair.

I've been using purple rain for a while now and while I really like it and keep going back to it, it turns magenta on me so fast if I use it plain and it's super annoying. Just a psa, if you are like me and want a true purple, you'll have to modify the purple rain a bit because it turns bright after max 2 washes, for me, I notice it after the first wash.

i find that manic panic stays and looks the best when your hair is bone dry when applying. i sit there with a hair dryer and dry the heck out of my hair, then apply the color and let it sit for an hour. when washing it out i only use conditioner and don’t wash with shampoo for 48 hours.

Manic panic is a brand I stand by it's the best one beside pravana that I have used the reason most people dont like manic panic is not the dyes fault it is usually hair types freshly bleached is good but I have found that my friends that have thin hair but a lot of wont stay i have thick and porous hair with out it being colored or bleached so I think the thinker and more porous hair types it works better on but of course that means you need more dye but my short mohawk I only need like 1/4 a tub when I had longer hair i would use half a container for think shoulder length hair

I had a terrible experience with Arctic Fox's purple rain. It just didn't want to stick and every single time I took a shower it bled like crazy. Couldn't wear any light colours, had to sleep on a dark towel, I even had purple sweat. I used it on my half damaged and half virgin brown hair and it didn't even want to take to the damaged part. I used Poison next thinking maybe that color will be better but it still kinda did the same thing but my hair was beautiful with it. This one actually stuck to my damaged hair an it was still fairly red for awhile. But again wasnt super impressed and the bleeding was just ridiculous.

I use arctic fox and I'm using purple rain after I get it cut at the end of this summer. I used the Poseidon and it didn't adhere to my roots but the rest of my hair, and it came out really quick. So that's why you don't dye your hair when it's greasy, or at least I don't

Yeah if I have dirty hair I tend to use a clarifying shampoo before hand but mine is usually freshly bleached so don’t have to worry about the oils. I liked purple rain but switched to violet dream cause I wanted a little lighter shade 😊

The colors within the brands seem to behave differently. My daughter is only 9 and I'm letting her experiment with hair color but I want something that washes out pretty fast. At least for the first time. She has medium blonde hair with light blonde highlights naturally and she really wants blue hair but I keep hearing that it fades quick then leaves a bit of a stain forever. That's my biggest fear lol. I think purple will be a safer bet for her because if it fades it'll basically just tone her hair more ashy. Maybe. Idk I'm trying not to ruin her hair right before school starts but the colors are all so inconsistent. 😩

Yeah some can really grab on and stay for ages! Blue tends to go pretty quick and you can get colour removers, I know pastel colours tend to fade away fast so maybe a pastel blue, you can mix the dye with conditioner to get the pastel effect too

If you want a multi-dimensional awesome pink/red style, I always use Arctic Fox and do an ombre/reverse ombre look with at least 3-4 colors. Before my current red/pink/purple/deep blue galaxy color scheme I have now, I used Wrath, Virgin Pink, and a tiny bit of Purple Dream, and overlapped each color about 2-3" to create a seemless transition that has ENDLESS possibilities with how amazing Arctic Fox colors blend together. For example, the super saturated contrasting pop of vibrant deep sea blue on my ends is actually created by mixing purple rain and Aquamarine, not the Blue Jean Baby color, and has an almost opalescent multi-colored depth to it. Fair warning though, once you start playing with Arctic Fox color combos (get some hair swatches that closely match your current color) you're gonna be hooked! I have every color they offer, they stay super vibrant on my hair (naturally very fine, blonde hair with darker roots) for MONTHS, and your hair will always smell like grape Crayola marker! 😁 And they best part, it's super easy to wash out when you wanna try new colors, and you can turn any color they have into a PASTEL too! If you wanted to stick with a color similar to your cotton candy color, you can make a totally amazing Rose Gold color that will fade to a super cute soft and subtle peach color that looks just as good too!

I use Purple Rain by Arctic Fox on my unbleached brown hair. Leave it on overnight and wash it out. I get a strong purple tint and it feels awesomely soft! It will last a couple months before it really fades at all.
