Armada: Painting Squadrons

Today I'm painting those tiny squadrons that come with Armada!

It would make it much easier to spray them if you mount them to some sticks e.g toothpicks then mount the sticks to a piece of wood Also personally I would spray both the ties and the x-wings grey then paint the black panels on the ties

Thanks for the vid, nice to see another one (not as many armada vids out there). I can say, that regarding the tie's it is indeed easier to base them in grey, and paint the panels a darker color - as you will be maneuvering the brush in the recessed areas, with the support struts kind of "guiding" the brush - as opposed to just trying to paint the struts. Again, thanks for the vid - will loot at the other stuff in your channel.

Great Video. Here's a tip, use double sided tape to keep them in place while priming/base coating.

Using poster tack would help keep things in place while spraying and wont pull paint off when you flip models to paint opposite side

have you thought about mounting them on cocktail straws jammed into a sturdy base, could get better coverage with primer, and keep the mounting point clear of paint.

It's much easier to just use brush on primer in my opinion. You can keep them on their stands, you know you will get a decent coat over the whole thing and you don't have to deal with spray primer blowing your tiny ships all over the place.

OK, crazy question from a fellow Floridian. Are you garage doors insulated? It looks like they are. I insulated mine as they face east and heat up with the morning sun. The insulation makes a ton of difference!

The grey spray enamel is the issue. You want that to dry completely before you attempt to paint in the future.

What do you think would be easier for the tie fighters, a black base with grey accents, or a grey base with black accents? I have seen it done either way.

Nick Van Riper I could have done both. I think it's easier to go with the darkest color as the base. Especially for the TIEs, because you CAN just dry brush grey over the black, I think that reflects the TIE look even better.

i know they are too small but remember thin your paints it helps it not to be to slopy

Not in this video, but I eventually just sprayed a white primer over all of the bases. Some people use Black. I did white so it would stand out.

Its easiest to first paint them a base grey using a flat spray. Then paint the outside panels Black, then take a Sanding Stick.. www.amazon.com/Squadron-Products-Fine-Sanding-Stick/dp/B000CDPO2E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1518251384&sr=8-1&keywords=hobby+sanding+sticks&dpID=21BiysSPtZL&preST=_SX342_QL70_&dpSrc=srch and lightly go over the raised areas of your tie Fighters... easy and less messy. Then if you want detail them with a little wash, add a blood stripe for your ACE or Veteran Squads etc. Using the sanding stick is a lot faster then tediously trying to paint every little triangle and in my opinion looks better. After Painting models for 30 years... you learn some quick tricks.
