I think I recall someone saying that the reason why Armada Wheeljack looks a lot like Sideswipe was because he actually was going to be Sideswipe but due to reasons I forgot they changed the idea. Odd how things like that change. Also funpub really missed a good opportunity to use the Universe 2.0 Sideswipe mold to make Armada Wheeljack out of because that was the perfect mold to use for an updated version of the character.

I remember seeing this figure on the catalog booklet that came with my Optimus Prime as a kid and I thought, "Wow! This guy must REALLY hate autobots. I want him!". 18 years later, I finally got him and I really like his vehicle mode ^_^

Wheeljack was injured during the inferno(in resulted the autobot symbol was damaged), he got stuck under some junk, and Hotshot left him to get help and he did, but the platoon leader and someone that looks like wheelie refused to go in. Hotshot disobeyed orders and went to save Wheeljack but overheated and failed. While this was happening Wheeljack thought abandoned him to save himself. Megatron recuse him(I think a deal was made), so Wheeljack joined the decepticons. In my eyes he's not a traitor, just someone who felt abandoned by someone he looked up to and trusted. I would do the same if I was in his shoes

And to add to the weirdness, in japan he was actually called sideswipe and years later when hasbro first introduced shattered glass, the mold was used for shattered glass sideswipe but he was given g2 drenches colors for some reason

wesleyv1 I can explain the drench colors. back in universe 1.0 this guy was going to be repainted into drench, but it was cancelled. so, to reference that, funpub did up SG sideswipe in those colors.

Actually, his Japanese name was Rampage. As for why he looks like Sideswipe... even Aaron Archer had no idea why. As far as can be told, the engineers at Takara just noticed he had a Sideswipe-y bodytype and decided to run with it.

One thing which I find quite amusing about this is, this guy's vehicle mode is kind a Bughati-like, a very sleek and fast-looking car. Yet it's his old friend-turned enemy, Hotshot, who's apparently meant to be the fast race-car type character, but HIS car looks like a slow chugger, like a car some college student inherits from their dad and they're really embarrassed by it. This still has, to me, one of the coolest and most unique designs Transformers ever had. Not so much for vehicle and robot modes, but rather because of that incredibly characterful gash in the hood/chest which slices his Autobot symbol, and a smaller Decepticon logo below it. And that both molded and shiny painted technical details in that gash looks SO GOOD. Great bit of thoughtful design, and it gave the TV show their best episode. Shame they botched the redemption arc by having it all happen off-screen.

The Unicron trilogy had a very weird thing of mis-naming them other names that clearly don't match the OG design. Especially Energon downshift, who is clearly supposed to be wheeljack, but wasn't because Wheeljack was already a thing (here) who clearly is supposed to be sideswipe but wasn't due to there already being Sideswipe, who is probably the worst Armada toy ever and does not deserve the name.

Unicron trilogy toys tended to just dump names to keep trademarks registered, rather than try to match old characters. For Wheeljack, Aaron Archer thought the name didn't sound like an Autobot, which is how it ends up on a traitor character.

This is what Universe Sideswipe should have been, minus the Mini-Con gimmicks. This figure never got the G1 colours though. Repair the Autobot symbol and remove the Decepticon ones, give him his classic red and black with greyish off-white and he is complete...
