@@greenpeasuit Not quite. Liv was chosen for the part first. U2 was supposed to do the music first also, but Steven offered to do their own version, and the Aerosmith version was much better than the U2 version. So Bay went with Aerosmith. Did Liv tell Steven she got the part and he went all out to help her? Yes, as her dad, I am sure he did. And we all enjoyed it.

Armageddon is an odd word to pronounce in English because it’s actually a borrowed word from Hebrew, Har Megiddo, translated as “Valley of Megiddo” which Napoleon once described as the most perfect battlefield in the world. It’s related to the end of the world, but in reality, it’s the site of the final battle between good and evil in Christian eschatology.

As well designed as all of their equipment was and as well trained as the Astronauts and Cosmonauts were, space travel is incredibly dangerous. A potato gun is usually made out of PVC pipe. You put a potato down the barrel. The back is then filled with a flammable gas, like aerosol hairspray. You then ignite the gas, and the potato shoots out. Built one as a kid. Fun project.
@islandseeker1260

Well, yes and no... There's also something called a "spud gun" (aka potato gun); you stick the gun barrel into a potato and that lodges a bit of the potato into it; then caps (like in a cap gun) are used to fire the little bit of potato out. Given the context of the way "potato gun" was used in the movie I think they were probably referring to a little toy spud "cap" gun (which was/is easy to purchase in a toy store). The potato gun you described (using PVC pipe and requiring a lot of DIY) is usually referred to as a potato cannon -- at least in my part of the world.

Potato Gun - Home experiment shooting a whole potato: That’s certainly not what the reference was to. The reference was to a toy gun that was sold to kids through ads in comic books and catalogs, beginning in the 1930s and stretching to present day. I bought one myself. It’s also sometimes called a “spud gun”. It was essentially an air gun that used a tiny piece of potato as a projectile. You’d stab the tip into a potato, dig out that little piece, pump it, and fire away. A single potato provides ammunition for an entire day of fun.

Roughnecks are referred to as oil workers who are rough, uncouth, ready to fight, and working the some of the most dangerous but high paying jobs related to oil drilling. They are common in places like West Texas, North Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana. I worked around quite a bit of them in North Dakota several years back and while some were nice people, others lacked basic manners and even proper social skills. A lot of roughnecks have past criminal convictions, little to no education beyond high school, working several long weeks away from home to pay their financial obligations like child support or saving up for a down payment on a home, land, or a new truck. But on a plus they do get very good benefits depending on the employer.

Lots of reactors say "Wouldn't it be easier to train the astronauts to drill?" The answer is no. The drillers don't have to fly the ship they just have to be passengers and wear a suit, but to be able to drill you'd need years of experience to know what to do when things go wrong. The ones who know how to do things best, do the job they're trained for. Yes, of course, drilling in space is different but I'd rather trust someone who has years of experience. Also, this is not real life. (For those who hadn't noticed.)

On a drilling rig you have a chain of command. The OIM (Offshore Installation Manager) then the Tool Pusher, followed by the Driller. It takes years to become a Driller. A combination of on the job training and school. The Roughnecks work for the Driller, the most experienced Roughneck is the Assistant Driller. Next is the Derrick Hand, the one that is up in the derrick at times when the automated equipment is not working he pulls or pushes the pipe in and out of the pipe rack in the derrick. Next are the floor hands which tighten or loosen the pipe. At the worm hole. You also have one or two crane operators and their riggers called Roustabouts. Most people start as a Roustabout. Then you have the maintenance crew which are led by the Rig Maintenance Supervisor, followed by the Rig Electronic technician, mechanic, electrician, and the motorman. Then add cooks and service personnel for the sleeping quarters. That is the crew of the drilling rig. Which is leased to an Oil Company. Paying for the hole to be drilled. The OIM is responsible for the rig and it's crew, but when push comes to shove he must keep the Oil Company happy, they are paying approximately $50,000 a day for use of the rig. Please watch Deepwater Horizon. I forgot to add there are a lot of third party personnel on the rig at any given time.

the way I always look at it is from the point of view of experience... you have two important things here, "Travel & Drilling" you apparently don't have a trained Astronaut who happened to work on an oil rig part or full time before joining NASA. So, do you put your most experience in the Travel (Astronaut) or the Drilling (Oil Rig Worker). It was Harry who insisted in having his team with them, and it was Truman who asked "Can they survive the trip or not?". I think there was a lot in this movie that happened off camera.

This is one of my favorite movies. My daughter is a daddy's girl. 3 and 1/2 years ago, July of 2020, I got covid. I had good insurance so I called 911 and had them take me to the hospital because it was clear. I was going to be in serious condition soon. 2 days after I went to the hospital, I deteriorated to the point where I could barely see and I wasn't getting any oxygen. The only option was a ventilator. An amazing nurse named Kasey held my left hand to her chest and held my phone to my ear so I could speak with my daughter. She also did it for my son but I don't remember that conversation. I do remember my daughter crying, bawling her eyes out and trying to stay composed. She was begging me to fight. I knew there was a 10% chance of people surviving a ventilator. I didn't know until over a year later that the doctor said only given me a 1% chance of survival. I lost a lot of memories, due to oxygen deprivation. But I think my daughter begging me to fight made a difference. It only felt like a few hours, but it was 16 days. I had to learn how to drink again, a few days later. I learned how to eat again. Several weeks later I learned how to stand again and then the end of that week I learned how to take a few steps again. It's weird going from being the Superman dad. My kids always saw me as being to a helpless person having to learn how to just be alive again. My family saw this movie once together and then both my kids and I saw it several more times in the theater because it was just such an epic film. I don't care if they got some of the science wrong, most of the movies I watch get something wrong, so I don't concern myself with that. I just love a great film. This is definitely one of them. But I'm proud of being the kind of dad that my kids see as being similar to someone like Harry stamper. I worked a lot of hours, but I always made time for my kids. And I always will. I'm glad you enjoyed this film, oh, and one more thing. I don't know if you ever play video games, but if you ever play battlefield 4 or battlefield 2042, you are welcome to join the Jedi clan, my group of friends. I used to do the Russian accent a lot, because my son and I sound the same. And it's based upon Lev from our mageddon. I haven't been doing it lately because of the Ukrainian war, I don't blame the Russian people for that, unfortunately, Russians have been oppressed by dictatorial imbeciles and a kleptocracy of corruption. I don't know what the answer is for your friends and family back home. I just hope that this war ends sooner rather than later, so more young Russians aren't senselessly killed. The sacrifice of life Russians have given over the centuries has been almost unparalleled. It is unfortunate that that trend has never faded away. I'm just glad you are safe.

I first saw this movie as a teenager, back when it came out in theatres! Yep, im 42... Back then, I loved this movie. It was nonstop action packed! Jerry Bruckheimer was knocking it out of the park at this point, and this was another great addition to his movies! My grandmother said she thought it was too slow. I bought the criterion edition, which was longer, and she said it made it even slower for her. Now that I am older, I can appreciate this movie for its photography. Like all the shots are staged beautifully. Everyone is posed in every shot to look heroic as F'k. Bruce Willis is giving his most Bruce Willisy facial expressions he has ever given. But I can see now why she thought it was slow. Every shot is a bit drawn out with dialog at times that is maybe a little long winded. Probably not as rewatchable as Con-Air, but a pretty dang good movie that has been somewhat forgotten. And if you don't cry a little at the end, you might not have a soul.

This movie came out in 1998 when I was still active duty in the Navy. I knew several DoD (department of defense) reps because we worked with civilian defense contractors. One said that in reality the US government and NASA would VERY quickly cross train astronauts in drilling and still send drillers but VERY quickly attemp to prepare them as astronauts as well. So both bases are covered. They would also not just send 2 shuttles but likely 4 to 5 because of the potential hazards and let's face it, relatively low chances of success

If I remember right, I could be wrong, this is the first movie where the father/parent (Steven Tyler) creates a Song for a movie that their Daughter stars in. The song "I don't wanna miss a thing" by Steven Tyler. I like the fact that Liv Tyler goes on to play an Elf (Arwen) in the Lord of the rings movies.

Lev is my favorite character in this movie. I love his attitude. And he is right that, other than the NASA pilots, he is the only real cosmonaut/astronaut on the crew. Everyone played their part, but they would not have succeeded or survived if Lev hadn't been there. You should definitely see more movies with Peter Stormare, he is brilliant and a little crazy, lol.

Regarding pronunciation: While the softer A sound is correct, it doesn’t actually matter. As long as you enunciate your syllables, your pronunciation doesn’t matter. Why not? CARAMEL. CARIBBEAN. Ask five of your friends how they pronounce these two words, and you’ll realize that in English, we don’t care, as long as it’s close enough. (As opposed to Chinese and Japanese.)

A potato cannon is a pipe-based cannon that uses air pressure (pneumatic), or combustion of a flammable gas (aerosol, propane, etc.),[1][2][3][4] to launch projectiles at high speeds.[5] They are built to fire chunks of potato, as a hobby, or to fire other sorts of projectiles, for practical use. Projectiles or failing guns can be dangerous and result in life-threatening injuries, including cranial fractures, enucleation, and blindness if a person is hit.

This movie came to theaters on July 1, 1998, right in wake of a movie called _Deep Impact_ which came to theaters on May 8th. The two movies have almost _exactly_ the same plot, but in my honest opinion, _Deep Impact_ is much better. _Armageddon's_ a good movie, but _Deep Impact_ is much better. Michael Bay only _wishes_ he was Mimi Leder.

Hi Dasha, you look very nice in your black top with your dark features!🙂You are correct about the title pronounciation in English!😉Yep, you know your big budget action films now, Dasha. A "Potato Gun" is just a plastic gun that shoots potatos. They range from small handheld guns to a large cannon size. A "Roughneck" is an oil driller. The song is "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith. Liv Tyler's (Grace) father is Steven Tyler who is in the band. I forgot they had that Russian character in this one, Dasha.😉I'm surprised you approved of Lev's acting as a Russian. Great emotional reactions to this big blockbuster film, Dasha!!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Yes, it does take years to train astronauts. But there was some key differences in this case. Real astronauts are trained to fly the space shuttle, and do other complex scientific work while in space. This crew in the movie are more less simply getting a lift to the asteroid. They won't be flying the space shuttle, or doing anything else other than their drilling duties. The one thing they would have to train for, is learning how to move while in space and work in space suits. Which that is pretty much the extent of the training you see in the movie.
