Ok, time for me to explain some armored tactics for DK on why you’d leave a troop transport, this is coming from a nerd, I have not served in the military so if anyone who has served wants to correct me, please do. Tanks while very strong are also very vulnerable to things like infantry. So, you have infantry by the armor in a “I scratch your back, you scratch mine” situation. The infantry protects the tank from enemy infantry that can easily flank it, and the armor protects the infantry from enemy armor and blasts through fortified positions that infantry would struggle with.
@dzasays55166 ай бұрын

So, fun fact about the uniforms themselves: The Steel Legion's uniforms are designed after more WW2 aesthetics, with the helmet being somewhat akin to the helmet worn by German paratroopers (Fallschirmjaeger) which resembled more of a rounded bowl shape, and the coats are designed after British tanker uniforms. The gas masks I'm kind of unsure about, but if I remember correctly the normal gas masks were sort of a mix of Soviet pilot masks and infantry masks.

While the infantry definitely have a WW2 vibe to them, I'd say they're overall a bit more Cold War. The Chimera is a bit of a hybrid between all the Soviet BMP variants with a bit of BTR in there (the wheeled Chimeras are very BTR) and Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) weren't really a thing in WW2 (though I'm sure you could find examples of up-gunned APCs acting in a similar capacity or other such weird one-offs if you looked hard enough). The Chimera is definitely more of an IFV than an APC, it's meant to stick around providing fire support or allow troops to fight from inside it if the battlefield is heavily irradiated or otherwise uninhabitable, it's not just a battle taxi. The word "Armageddon" is also pretty evocative of nuclear war, so I don't think the Cold War vibe is coincidental.

Them talking about the “atmosphere and nature” of and the reason for always wearing those uniforms on Armageddon made me realize somethings… -One: How have Yarrick, Von Straub, the civilians, the nobles, sisters of Batter, outside allies, etc, survived for so long? -Two: Humanity has a habit of creating manmade death worlds, and/or destroying a planets' natural environment via exterminatus, forge worlds, or just Armageddon and Terra in general. -Three: The fact that humans are still able to not simply survive but thrive on a place like Armageddon either speaks volumes to humans or shows the writers ability to be consistent. -Four: If JRR Tolkien, the guy the made Princess Mononoke, Lovecraft, the Lorax, or any environmental activist since the 1960s ever read about this, 40k manmade death works, or forge worlds, they'd feel vindicated and horrified.
@glitterboy20986 ай бұрын
the atmosphere thing is largely misrepresented.. the atmosphere itself is not toxic. certain parts of the world however have been covered in toxic dust and the like, and when operating in those places you need masks to prevent the dust being blown around and kicked up from being breathed in. the hive cities have atmospheric handling systems to prevent the dust from getting in, while when you go far enough from the cities and the toxic deserts, you find more conventional forests, jungles, etc. the accounts of stuff burning and so on refer to destroyed hivecities and imperial outposts, where thingsl ike promethium wells have been set ablaze and building fires burn uncontrolled. (in the later, often started by orks in the very cities where they now live.) while the Steel Legion (armageddon's PDF) largely specialized in operating in the planet's toxic deserts as a result of those being where the majority of the important imperial stuff is located (and is largely why said deserts are now toxic), there are a number of other specialized forces on the world fighting in those other environments. for example, a large amount of catachan jungle fighters were brought in to fight the Orks in the equatorial jungles during the 2nd war (a process that quickly became multi-generational for those regiments, a colony in all but name. these are the 'ork hunters' mentioned. since they've been on the world for centuries though, the catachan connection is often overlooked) the third last chancer's novel, Annihilation squad, takes place largely on Armageddon, with a team of Penal legion troops being led on a kill team mission to infiltrate an ork held hive city to assassinate a human traitor. to get there they have to land on the planet and make their way through both the jungles and the deserts, interacting with imperial troops along the way.

I painted DK killteam as the steel legion Iron Heads and even painted and "unpainted" tank for the them to harken back to that factory fight. It's still one of my favorite things on my shelves.

i think more likely 30k started the wars of Armageddon as Armageddon use to be a planet named Ulanor which was essentially the Ork home world
@ChadmasterDante6 ай бұрын
BEST REGIMENT, LET'S GO!!!!!!!!!! Also, no mention of the fact that Orks are drawn to Armageddon because it's actually Ullanor Prime, their home planet? It was moved by the Mechanicus after the War of the Beast(IIRC) to a different sector and renamed. Also, no mention of the fact that Steel Legion are the OG Gas Mask Boys, and that Krieg started as a simple recolor of SL models in a White Dwarf article.

I'm disappointed Kirioth didn't outline why the Steel Legion are SO effective: Because they're ALL mechanised units. All of their formations having chimeras (due to how AGGRESSIVELY polluted the world of Armageddon is, even wearing the huge coats and gas masks only protects them for a few hours) means that if one of them went rogue they would be FAR harder to deal with, as they would have no easy counter. Basically, all formations have an easy counter. if a tank formation went rogue, a bomber or artillery formation would deal with them. But all of them being mechanised complicated that, and is usually not allowed. The only reason the Steel Legion get away with that is because they're just THAT loyal.

Wargames atlantic has some great Steel legion Stand in miniatures
@luketfer6 ай бұрын
Yup the Raumjaeger kit. If you want Imperial Guard done within a reasonable budget, go Wargames Atlantic. £25 for a box of 30 guys vs £20 for a box of 10 from GW. They got your covered for Steel Legion, Vostroyans/Krieg (in one kit), basic infantry (available in both male and female kits), actual modern looking Catchans, Praetorian Guard/Mordian Iron Guard (again in one kit) and even Colonial Marines/Cadian kits. If you aren't going to official GW tournaments (of which I think there's like..maybe one or two major ones, even in the UK GW only has ONE official tournament because it's a Warhammer World) then you can actually build your Guard army fairly cheaply.

What made the Blitzkrieg so effective was the fact before the main tank doctrine used was basically a bunch of tanks the bigger the better scattered across infantry regiments to be used in a supporting role where as the Germans had all there tanks concentrated in specific areas

I have a collection of one of every mass produced Vostroyan Sculpt so I feel the need clarify some things that Kirioth has said here. There was are 22 Vostroyan minis(not including the dead trooper sculpts), counting the heavy weapons teams as 1 each. This included a Command Squad (Commander, MasterVox, Medic, Random Special Weapon, Standard Bearer), an Infantry Squad (Sergeant, Random Heavy Weapons Team, 6 Individual Troopers, Random Special Weapon Trooper), sculpts for Flamer, Grenade Launcher, Plasma Gun,(I've only ever seen Converted Meltaguns), sculpts for Heavy Bolter, Lascannon, Mortar, and 2 different Sniper Sculpts (I've never seen minis for Vostroyan Autocannon and Missile Launcher that weren't Converted), they also did 4 total Officer Sculpts and 1 Sergeant Sculpt. Tl:dr The Vostroyans had a mini, for all but 3 weapon options

Tanks and Mechanized Infantry. That is why the Steel Legion are a top tier Guard Regiment and one of my all time favorite Regiments. Let this hopefully be a prelude to the 2 Wars for Armageddon. Because there ever only was 2. Anyone who says otherwise should report directly to the Inquisition for "re-education."

There's two major Guards regiments specialized in killing Orks, the Steel legion, and the Valhallans that also got invaded by Orks in the past. They're the soviet-looking ones who come from an ice world and love so much cold climates taht even mild temperatures make them sweat profusly, but they're in no sleeves T-shirts in the snow XD

Option 3 for the different Guard models... 3rd Party Market, get some guard bits, and kitbash; I'm doing that with Les Grognards for the Vostroyans. Though I do have some actual Vostroyan minis for a kill team.

I mean they obviously Arma-get-it-on to increase numbers. That old Mad TV sketch has dwelt in my brain just for this moment. Also, not a Guard player. But a 'happy' medium is to have more custom kits, like Marines have.

Speaking of Armageddon, when I started my Ork army in 4th ed, I wanted to paint them as Blood Axe Clan. At the time Boss Snikrot was said to still be stalking the Jungles of Armageddon, and that is a part of the reason I ended up basing them in jungle colours.
