I was ships division officer at NAS Adak 4/81 to 7/83.....great presentation! The rock on north end of the island past the Coast Guard Logan Station at the base of the first role going to the hot spring was called "Castle Rock". The two tugs we had are sitting on the bottom of Sweepers Cove. Really sad to see how neglect and mother nature have obliterated so much!!thanks again!! Commander Bill Welp...Then Ensign Welp aka "Tugboat Willie"

We lived on Adak from 1955-1957 while my father was in charge of the Naval Communication Station at Clam Lagoon. I attended the school for 7 and 8th grade. Many elementary grades were combined into 2 grades. When I was there, there were 12 or so high schoolers with one teacher. We loved it as there was much to do. We went frequently to Bering Hill to swim, go to the movies, and bowl. We hiked at Finger Bay and did Girl Scout overnights at the “camp”. Our quarters were across the street from the commissary/navy exchange/ gedunk. My sister and I earned tons of money because there were not many teenagers for babysitting but there were lots of families with little kids: we charged 50cents/hr! Our competition were the enlisted men who would sit gladly for a home cooked meal. A couple of times we had days of 70 degrees and the Captain would declare an island holiday and everyone would be outside. My father periodically went out to Attu to visit the NavCom station there. I have great memories of my Dad’s tour of duty there.

I was a Navy brat when I was there. I lived in Middle Amulet village which was right next to the runway. That was P-3 Orion base while I was there. I saw Fantastic Voyage in the Bearing building theater. I swam in the pool several times, even though they said the pool was heated I still blueish lips and finger nails. I was in the Boy Scouts while I was there and we camped in tents at Lake Betty and blown off the hill and we had to seek shelter in one of the old buildings at Finger Bay. That building at 42:57 in the video was an intelligence building that's why there are no windows on it. The Navy kept tabs on the Russians and that building was where they gathered and kept that information. My dad was a Radioman in the Navy and we were there for about a year and a half. I still have my school yearbook the Bilikin for 1968. I remember climbing those stairs going up to the Bearing building many times. I enjoyed my time there. Thanks for the video.

Hello, I just watched this presentation. Excellent job! Brought back a lot of memories and taught me a few things I didn't know. Thank you. I did see Season 1 of the show we aren't supposed to talk about. Glad your taking care of EOD. I was stationed there in '82. Marine Barracks duty. I spent a lot of time in and around the compound. Thanks for the photos of the weapons site, compound. I walked that ground numerous times. That sandbag bunker didn't exist in '82. Did you get photos of the command center inside the weapons compound barracks building? The Marine Corps barracks at the weapons site had a room in the middle. That was the command center. Everything that happened in and around that compound ran through the command center. It was a top-secret room and access was highly restricted. I can't go into details about all the technology in the room and around the facility. I can say, there were numerous Marines patrolling inside and outside of that compound 24/7/365 with weapons locked and loaded. The Seabees liked to mess with us Marines, we gave it right back in good military fashion. I often wondered if they realized they were playing with fire? I highly doubt they knew every Marine had a round in the chamber at all time's while on duty.

The Navy barracks above Clam Lagoon, you said it felt like The Walking Dead and I laughed because a friend and I were there and he asked what I saw inside and I told him "A little girl pajamas" That freaked him out. Nothing scarier than a little girl in pajamas in that setting.

I lived in the houses at the bottom of the hill across the street from the Bering building. 90-92. The pizza place was not associated with McDonald's. It was just a pizza place run by the base. It was built while we were there. There was a Baskin Robbins next door to it.

At the end of your slideshow from the air showing Bearing Hill you could see the movie theatre building directly across the street from my barracks which was about in the center. You took the tunnel from the movie building and it came straight up through corridors into our barracks. I worked in the snack bar in the movie building as a cook making hamburgers and fries. Hey Jude was on the juke box, played about fifty times a night. 68-69.

From the air you can see the water. I had access to the captains gig, a small surf rescue boat. If you went out to the left of the photo from the plane at the end of slide show past the breakwater, which were large boulders and or cement pieces stacked to keep the huge waves from the sea that would roar in during storms. We went out and hugged the right shoreline for about a half mile or so and there was a I suppose volcanic "rent" in the mountain, like split from the top down who knows how deep. The sea rushed in and formed a channel about a hundred feet wide or so that goes back into the island about a quarter or half mile. It's been many years so distance details are fuzzy. It comes to a very rocky "beach" at the end and there was an old hut, or trailer like building there I suppose fishermen might have used way before my time there. We climbed up the slope behind it and wanted to slide on gunny sacks back down but it was too spongey and would not slide. Your feet sink in a few inches into the moss like stuff. My friend Rod Hall and I almost got killed one time coming back out as a wilowah (sp?) storm whipped up while we were all the way to the end of the split in the mountain. When we were going back, to hang a "right" to get back to the breakwater and calm bay area the waves were absolutely huge and driving. It was broad daylight but it was almost dark as night from the black storm clouds. As there were huge rocks protruding up out of the sea floor on the way back to the breakwater and it turned so dark you could hardly see we were afraid. The waves were driving in to the cleft mouth at about a forty five degree angle and huge, maybe twenty feet or so tall. We had an old coast guard surf rescue boat that was designed to be able to roll over an self right and self bail but we for sure did not want that scenario. I remembered seeing the movie Papillion where it was stated that "every seventh wave is the big one", so we were heading directly out to sea away from the cleft and were afraid to try to make the then more than 90 degree turn to go back to where we knew the breakwater was but could not see more than fifty yards or so. We plowed through the waves, coming over the bow of the boat, only the windshield and canopy kinda sorta blocking the waves. We had also strapped ourselves in with large safety straps so we could not be washed over the side. Went up the front of the seventh wave and heeled the wheel over as we crested. It almost rolled, but the three foot prop grabbed just enough water to kick the tail of the boat around. Then we were wide open throttle trying to maintain steerage as we were kind of surfing towards the breakwater opening. I estimate we were doing twenty miles per hour or so which is way faster than this old chugger of a boat could do on flat water. We could not see the rocks that stick up thirty to fifty feet or so out of the sea that is easy to maneuver through when you can see and is calm. Lots of space between them as big ships coming in can go through. But, when you cannot see and you are being driven by storm surge waves with little control and ability to see what is coming at you it was a thrill I will never forget. We had no radio or anything but life jackets and if you went into the water you were dead in a few minutes from hypothermia for sure. We were more afraid of the Navy if they had to send out a search and rescue helo than anything which is why we made a run for it. Looking back we would have stayed at the back of the cleft till the storm died down and risked the ire of those who knew we were out there and would have sounded the alarm. Foolish, foolish youth. But, Roddy and I made it back, soaked to the skin and almost blue from cold. Have lots of stories of our adventures in that boat. But thought I would share this one. Not sure if any of my old buddies will ever see this. I have tried to search on line for them but never connected. Mike Gaskin suddenlygod@gmail.com

I was a Boy Scout on Adak in 1980 (crossed over from Cub Scouts while my father was stationed there) and I just shared with my son (who made Eagle Scout this year) these pictures. The Girl Scout hut used to be further away down the road as I remember it. I remember sleeping on that floor in that room in my first sleeping bag. I also remember my first foil dinner that I cooked, with my father, at a small fire we had between the cabin and the water...not sure where we got the wood but there was charcoal involved :). Great mix of memories from this place.

I just came across your 9 month old video of Adak. In it you wanted someone who worked at the Modified Advanced Undersea Weapons compound. Well I did between 1977 - late 1978. To this day I don't think I can get too specific about what we did there or what type of weapons were there because the atomic energy act of 1954 is still a law. However I did leave my personal mark up there in the maintenance shop where the tall stand up doors opened to the side with the hoist monorail goes inside. I'd like to know if my murial of a bomb with electrons circling it still exists or was it painted over on the inside panel of the large doors. I painted that on those doors. The bomb was white. If it's still there please let me know. Thanks for the video!

41:22 This is C and D dorm with the weight room being the smaller building in between. Upper D dorm was reserved for the Company I Marines and lower D was reserved for the CTOs that worked out at Shotgun. 41:56 This is the gym which also had seating at one end. Movies would be played there in the evenings. I took on a part time job selling tickets until the movie channels on cable TV caused the attendance to dwindle. Mar 87 - Sep 88

74-75 OT at the Navfac. I loved Adak, hiked the north shore of Mt. Moffett,, and found out the hard way why it's off limits. Also, the beach on the Andy side of Adagdak, the sand is hot,, like burns the feet. Dude, your last name,, was our motto! Signed the freak bro's, Moondog, Primo, and oz. PS, I got accused several times of the secret tunnel under the Navfac where we refuelled nuclear submarines,, good for a laugh to this day! Addendum: There were no noticeable rats in 74. Addendum (2), we were walking along the road adjacent to the underground nuc storage facility. There were no buildings viable. I was taking photo's when a Marine grabbed my camera and jerked the film out. At least he handed my camera back. There were no trees other than the National Forest. All trees other had to be planted since I was there. I found this very interesting. Addendum (3) During 74-75 the entire year there were 5 days total when we saw the sky. In fact on those days, all non-essential personnel,, got the day off. Climate change?

I was stationed there in 73-74 , worked at pwc. Wc.20 , remodeled the enlisted. Men's club , Bayview , the building contained a swimming pool , sauna , bowling alley movie theater , and a pizza parlor , and another. Restaurant , there was a horse stable , any tree there was planted there. Being native Americans , the fed. Gov. Would have financially supported this island , at night we would not walk around town alone at night , the teen Aleuts were known to assault servicemen that were alone , why do you sound so negative , do you know why Adak existed , it was there to monitor Russian sub activity , Adak needs to be reopened , whichever moronic pres. That closed it down made a big mistake , watched a lot of new Clint Eastwood movies there when they first came out , also uso shows , in 73 we did not have a McDonald's , we would take booze out to the crab boats , and they would give us huge amounts of seafood. If you went to the tack house for the horse stable , you would have seen boots nailed to the top of the door , one pair was mine , hey Tex, hey Willie. That burned out restaurant you went into had a juke box , and you could get a steak , and also shrimp. Upstairs in the same building was the Bayview club , behind the building , below the Marine barracks was the Tundra Tavern.the island was full of bogs , in 73 a sailor that worked in the armory came up missing , the parents came up to investigate , could not come to a conclusion , popular they was. That his section leader , and his chief took him out , and put him in a big , or that he was taken on a Russian trawler , hence they put a stop to the travelers.
