Regiments of Croatian and Slavonian military frontier (grentzers) had artillery. As I recall, one battery per regiment. Suggestions to break down Don Cossacks and Slobodian Cossacks (thanks GPT 4o): 1. Morale Don Cossacks: Higher morale. As a warrior class with a deep-seated culture of military service, the Don Cossacks were known for their resilience and loyalty. This can translate into higher morale, especially when fighting in open plains or familiar environments. Slobodian Cossacks: Slightly lower morale. The Slobodian Cossacks were more regionally-based and often engaged in irregular warfare. They would have high morale in skirmishes or defensive positions but might suffer in prolonged direct engagements. 2. Marching Speed Don Cossacks: Moderate speed. Known for their heavy reliance on horseback, Don Cossacks would maintain a steady pace that allows for endurance over long distances. Slobodian Cossacks: Higher speed. These Cossacks would excel in rapid maneuvers, especially in shorter bursts, as they were more accustomed to quick, guerrilla-style tactics and often acted as scouts or raiders. 3. Accuracy of Shooting Don Cossacks: Moderate accuracy. Don Cossacks were skilled with a variety of weapons but weren’t known primarily for sharpshooting. They would rely on a balance of ranged and close combat. Slobodian Cossacks: Higher accuracy. Since the Slobodian Cossacks would likely engage in ambushes and skirmishes, they’d prioritize accurate shots from cover, making them more reliable in ranged combat. 4. Charge Don Cossacks: High charge capability. Renowned for fierce cavalry charges, the Don Cossacks would have a powerful, intimidating charge with a significant morale impact on enemies. Slobodian Cossacks: Moderate charge. While effective in smaller skirmishes, the Slobodian Cossacks would not deliver the same impactful charge as their Don counterparts, preferring to harass rather than engage in heavy assaults. 5. Melee Combat Don Cossacks: Excellent melee fighters. With a culture steeped in close-quarters combat, they’d perform well in melee, using sabers and spears with high effectiveness. Slobodian Cossacks: Moderate melee skills. While they could hold their own, Slobodian Cossacks might rely more on tactical positioning than brute strength, preferring hit-and-run tactics rather than direct melee combat. This differentiation emphasizes the Don Cossacks as powerful frontline cavalry and melee specialists, while the Slobodian Cossacks excel in mobility, skirmishing, and ranged precision. Balancing these differences would create diverse tactical opportunities for the Russian Empire faction in the game.

So excited to see the playtest! As for the Russian Cavalry, the Curassiers (Csr) should have higher morale and melee but mediocre charge, the Grenadiers (Gdr) higher charge bonus but lower morale. Ie the Csr hit average but stay in the fight longer, Gdr hit hard but cannot sustain for long in melee. Hopefully leads to Csr able to operate independently while the Gdr need to hit a flank or shaken enemy. Also a final note, I HIGHLY reccomend really putting time and effort into HIGH QUAILTY SOUND EFFECTS for the Battles. Obviously the artistic graphics are great but an amazing soundscape can really seal the immersion. The thunderous cannon, crackling rifles, tin of drums. "The Crescendo of Battle"

This is really nice to see! Excited for this game. At first glance it seems France getting only 1 tree should be changed. The Volontaires could be their own tree as Volontaires Recruits, with the Irish/German/Swiss as Foreign Recruits. Or maybe both Volontaires and Irish/German/Swiss troops as Foreign Recruits. France having 1 big tree and 1-2 smaller trees seems better, more variety and more interesting. The Russian Artillery Recruits seem obsolete and kind of detrimental (if I understand correctly that this makes the recruiting more random). I don't see a problem adding the artillery into the main Russian tree. For Austria, perhaps Croat or Pandur irregulars could be added. I've many more unit ideas and will consider reaching out to you directly in the future. Best of luck and consider me an instant buyer!
@armchairhistoryinteractive20462 ай бұрын
Hey Ruben, thanks so much for the feedback! I gave France one large tree solely for gamification reasons. I thought it'd be interesting if each nation had their own style of unit tree distinct from the others. And France was known at this time for having the largest military, so giving them the flexibility to churn out a lot of different troops was something I wanted to represent. I had originally considered Volontaires + the Swiss/German/Irish as their own tree, but I made it all one tree just for the fun of it honestly. It's the same with the Russians, I wanted to make them distinct by having a ton of small trees since they had a harder time with their supply lines and managing their forces. I did consider Pandurs, but looked into it and apparently Austria disbanded their Pandurs right before the war. For that reason, I ended up replacing the Pandurs with Jaegers, and I figured Austria also has Grenzers which should give them some pretty great light infantry options.
@perun_542 ай бұрын
I think the unit progression from recruits (peasants) to guards is wrong. I think you would add more realism and gameplay variety by adding a separate branch with guard units starting with foot guards. Historically, the guard was recruited from the upper classes and had better equipment, which did not always reflect on its effectiveness in battle. However, creating a separate branch for provincial regiments and guards would be a great addition to the game.
@armchairhistoryinteractive20462 ай бұрын
Hi Perun! Definitely would be more historical if we went that route, but I think for gameplay purposes it's more fun to be able to see your unit progress into a much better unit. I looked into splitting the trees up even more, but I found it wasn't as fun if you could only upgrade a unit 1-2 times between several mini-trees.
@perun_542 ай бұрын

A question I have is if it's possible that there will an option to have some Belgian (Called Austrian Netherlands at the time) infantry or cav units. It has historically been a quite densely populated region after all. Just only Artillery feels of to me. It may be possible however that some of the German and Border region infantry for the French however was recruited in the Austrian Netherlands since it's on the way to Prussia. I do not know much about the 7 years war and am just speculating of course.
@MarcoCaprini-do3dq2 ай бұрын
There were 5 Dutch infantry regiments in the Austrian army during the war (one raised by France and then transferred to Austrian command), but since they weren't that many and also for quantity balancing reasons I don't think they're gonna add them. But if they don't you'll still be able to customize the regiments' uniform, flag and name to match historic units or make up your own.
@armchairhistoryinteractive20462 ай бұрын
They use the same uniform as the regular German fusiliers, so all you need to do is rename your German fusiliers to "Netherlandish Fusiliers" and adjust their flags if needed as well.

Don Cossack here. The key to the Don Cossacks and why we are commonly one of the most represented in Russian military history is because of our complete loyalty to the tsar. The Don are incredibly fearless horsemen and have been accredited to being some of the most brave Russian troops of all. What annoyed me with Fire and maneuver when it came to Cossacks was how easily they broke. The Don are THE most loyal Cossacks to the empire and the tsar/emperor or empress and have fought entirely to the death on many occasions. I believe that the Don should have an incredibly high morale, easily one of the highest in the game. The Germans also feared the Cossacks as they were seen as these barbarians with no rules who kill for fun which played heavily on their morale, I believe that like in total war, any units facing the senior Cossack cavalry should have decreased morale. EDIT: To put it simply Don Cossacks have higher morale due to historic loyalty to the empire. they should cause a morale debuff when near enemy infantry.

Noted! :)
@Elias-f2w6e2 ай бұрын
@ this may be difficult but I would love to see the Cossacks with randomized clothing. Since the Cossack regiments of the period wore their own clothing which was often multi colored. Also, if you could add the Don Cossack Crest which is a white stag on a blue field with a golden arrow and antlers as a Russian emblem that would be fantastic.
@armchairhistoryinteractive20462 ай бұрын
@@Elias-f2w6e Hey Elias, we actually do have it so the cossacks have randomized clothing between regiments. It’s going to be really interesting to see how well terrain elevation works to effect fire and movement. I see mainly flat areas depicted so far. Also units are firing through other friendly units and even their own ranks, which made me wonder about the terrain problem as objects drawn (spites) rather than rendered in 3d (polygons) often have the disadvantage of having no physical presensce for the program to identify as a blocker. No physics engine so to speak.
@armchairhistoryinteractive20462 ай бұрын
Hey Fresh! Valid concerns. The bulk of the maps are going to appear flat, but I will have peaceable hills I can place down which will increase unit range and block LOS from shooting through hills. We are also going to prevent the rear ranks of regiments from firing so it's only the front two, and will look more realistic. There's definitely some limitations in doing the terrain in 2d, but it's allowed us to make progress on this project a lot quicker and we can consider moving everything to 3d if we're able to work on another game after this.

Don Cossacks were lancers with very long lances (like double the size of other nations, this was so they would hit first against the very talented cavalry of the polish and ottomans), they were noted by the Caucasians as being formation or regular type cavalry (the lance was their first and last style of war, they were lost in a context in which it was hard to utilise, it should be noted that in fact cossacks did have firearms and to their Napoleonic foes were noted for pinning down retreating or isolated formations with irregular dismounted skirmishing, often for hours (or overnight), until regular troops arrived to clear up the pinned down force (who usually just surrendered, having already been exhausted by the harassment and not looking for a last stand), these light tactics were probably learned from the Caucasians, but doesn't seem to have impressed them much, probably because they knew exactly how to slip away despite specialisation on stopping that), though of course to europeans they were very light cavalry particularly feared for harassment. I don't know about the other units, but cossacks were know for firearm use, and those in the Kubanian region preferred swords and irregular warfare. Settled Hussars sound very interesting, I'll have to look them up. The morale choice for the Russians is correct, they had a very specific military culture and national attitude at this time, their soldiers were brave and pious, but they had more will than expertise or ridged discipline, their troops were semi-professional (one thing of interest would be how many supplies they use as Russian regiments were largely self-sufficient, on campaign this meant less but they could resupply themselves with raw materials and then make what they needed themselves) and viewed themselves as fighting for a divinely mandated monarch in a far more literal and prominent way than other Europeans (though in most this was still the accepted Christian attitude towards kingly authority, and among the Austrians was prominent as well due to the history, or not, as this was a period of dynastic contention over the holy Roman empire).

Shouldn't Austrians get their Pandurs since historically they were more famous in using pandurs as skirmishers? Also Prussian artillery shouldn't be that bad, in Austrian Succession War Prussian field artillery was actually surperior than Austrians, and Prince Wenzel Lichtenstein's reform was a response for surperior Prussian Artillery at the time. So even at the point of Seven Year's War Austrians did have better artillery, the Prussian one shouldn't be so bad. In fact, after the war Gribeauval developed his system combining the advantage of both Prussian and Austrain's artillery system while remaining old system's positive aspects. So that means Prussian Artillery did excel in some ascpects at the time, shouldn't be so weak here.

Hi Xunqi, I could be wrong on this, but the last time I researched the Pandurs I read that they became inactive right before the war began, or at least were relocated and didn't see much combat. So I decided to just give the Austrians Jaegers instead. Prussian artillery isn't necessarily weak in MoC, and the men who served in Prussia's artillery corps were competent, but the lower stats simply reflect the attitude of the commanders who did not consider artillery to be as important as the other branches. It'll definitely still be possible to play into artillery as Prussia, it just won't be as efficient as Austrian and Russian artillery.

The french irish flags were the french cross of St Michael with the irish cross of St Patrick. The british would use the cross of st patrick later in the early 19th century. Also ths irisu fled english controled ireland. Not england.

Yeah I was just saying it looked like a British Union jack and thought it looked cool, thanks for the clarifications. Must've mispoke if I said the Irish fled England haha.

The Airguns were pretty rare , and even if it was effective , was too little to change a war
@freshfresh52052 ай бұрын
@ you are of course correct. They were rare, expensive and brittle bits of kit. But they were fairly unique to austria’s army iirc. They don’t have to be a major part of the army. They could be a rare curiosity. It’s a flavor thing.

If I rember correctly the Airguns appeared at the end of the 18th century, this game has an earlier time frame
@freshfresh52052 ай бұрын
@@MarcoCaprini-do3dq you’re probably right on that point. I remember them from empire total war which was pre-napoleonic. That’s probably where I got 18c from.

Not gonna lie I was hope that the russian tree to include the step nomad horse archer and native troops.
@armchairhistoryinteractive20462 ай бұрын
I would've loved to include those, but creating an entire archery system solely for the horse archers (who participated very little in the war) was just outside of the scope/budget.

Should add colonial infantry for the French, that would have like… Quebecois and Acadians militia and Troupes de la Marine.
@armchairhistoryinteractive20462 ай бұрын
For now, the game is just set in Europe. When/if we add an American campaign we can definitely add in native and colonial troops!
