Armenians flee Nagorno-Karabakh after brutal war with Azerbaijan: ‘This will not break us’

In some surrendered areas in and around Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenian villagers like Martinios have five days to pack and leave before Azeri forces arrive. The district where he lives, Kalbajar, was given up by Armenia as part of a ceasefire deal, which brought a brutal six-week war with Azerbaijan to an end. War here has been generational, and in the 1990s it was the Azeris who fled these villages in a ceasefire handover. Martinios himself moved here soon after to escape the persecution against Armenians in Azerbaijan. Now that peace has been brokered, and after decades of bitterness and mutual distrust, can he bear to leave behind the home he built?

Azeri residents ran and evacuated at the news of an approaching Artskah army, just like Armenians in Hadrut did in this war. The area on the video here was not taken by an azeri army, but turned over thru an agreement, so people have time to dispose of their property any which way they want.

Azerbaijan's president said many times that ordinary civilians can stay in Karabakh! the problem is most of the people in this district are settlers of the past 3 decades not real ethnic armenians, they even wear military uniforms and carry guns, they have no place to stay and must leave!

Azerbaijan was given the Nagorna Karabakh region when Stalin was in power before it was Armenian. He gave it away to appease the Turks. It has historically been Armenian lands the Armenians fled when it was given to the Azeri's They retook it in the 90s when the USSR ceased to exist and here we are today. Keep in mind Azerbaijan was historically Northern Iran until during the Russo-Persian wars Russia occupied that region.

These houses originally belonged to Azerbaijani citizens who constituted absolute majority of Kalbajar population. In 1993 when Armenia occupied Kalbajar which is internationally recognised territory of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijanis were given just 10 hours to leave. Алиев плакался журналистке БИ-БИ-СИ, что бессовестные армяне унесли унитазы. Какой-то мелочный султан, у него есть нефть, газ, а он жалуется на весь мир, что его оставили без б/у туалетов. Надеюсь он сейчас удовлетворён количеством б/у унитазов ,что армяне оставили ему и радуется вместе со своим народом.

Don’t forget how Azerbaijan started killing the Armenians living in Azerbaijan between 1988-1992. Also, thousands of Armenians were displaced from Azerbaijan escaping the killings. This was before the first Karabagh war! Armenians of Karabagh signed a referendum declaring independence from Soviet Azerbaijan. After that Azerbaijan started killing the Armenians living in Sumgait, Maragha, Kirovabad, etc.
