Been doing some single-handed sword against longsword sparring lately myself for the first time in a while, and it's ridiculously difficult especially with just a single sword. A buckler makes it a little bit more manageable, but much less than I thought it would. I find sword and dagger to be the best combo against a longsword (although it might just be me being better at it than the two other options) because surprisingly the dagger can overbind even the longsword. It's not very practical to try to block with the dagger, but moving the opponent's blade to it after a block with the sword has been working well.

if you think about it a dagger is just a sword that's all forte and no foible
@penttikoivuniemi21465 ай бұрын
@@coreyyanofsky That's exactly it. But it's still shockingly strong, being able to easily overcome a two-handed weapon with your weaker hand.

Arming Sword vs sidesword is such a difficult fight in my experience, the sideswords ability to lead in with the point is so hard to deal with.
@45calibermedic5 ай бұрын
Why wouldn't the arming sword be able to lead with the point?
@Theredsunrising5 ай бұрын
@@45calibermedic Lack of hand protection. The only thing protecting you is the blade and the quillons which means it's much easier for quick strikes to land and essentially knock you out of the battle. It's why earlier Sword and Buckle uses the shield to protect the sword hand much more than Marozzo for example.
@Specter_11254 ай бұрын
Makes sense. Many side swords were ultimately just arming sword blades with extra hand protection.

Amazing!! Exciting until the end! After a short while I noticed myself moving along [with Federico] as if it had an influence/or would have helped. Imagine such a situation (centuries ago) for real! A really great experiment! Bravo! 👏 I love your videos/input!

Lots of fun! I like that the "longsword" user is not using an incredibly long sword. These weapons can actually be very similar blade lengths, especially in Fiore's time. Or, at least from what I have found. Brave of you to do that without any buckler or shield!
@kaizen50235 ай бұрын
Re: Brave, well, I would say it mainly takes trust that your opponent is not going to clobber you if you miss a parry, due to the amount of force that a longsword can generate. But they are both being calm and professional and not hitting needlessly hard, which is what you want in a sparring partner.
@coreyyanofsky5 ай бұрын
not sure who your opponent is but i give them kudos for textbook use of a geissler (1:30) against an aggressive opponent with a reach disadvantage -- perfect choice of tactic and perfect execution

I wonder how the dynamics of this would change when you have a dagger on your off hand, like some of the renaissance sidesword and dagger/espada de lato and dagger manuals do. Sideswords and longswords are contemporary for a bit so that match-up may have been possible, albeit improbable. Also, simple sword and dagger drill for a YT short pls
@Specter_11254 ай бұрын
They’re actually contemporary for longer than you’d expect. Some people kept using them throughout much of the 16th century.

Thank you for looking into it haha. I am making a club with a focus on mixed HEMA weapons. Single arming sword vs Longsword is by far the scariest combo I found, mainly because of need to rush in the moment they realise they can be defensive. The scary part is rushing and being impaled in the neck or armpit, it hurts a lot because all I can think of at the moment is throwing myself onto the enemy deflecting their sword, which doesn't help all the time. :D With Military Saber at least I can get in more careful with extra protection to my hand, so my sword can protect me better in front of me. But still, range and offense difference is not that vast as everyone in club though, single sword has quite the reach and presence even against longsword. I found out that beign agressive helps a lot, and the there are 2 advantages, one is slightly easier clinch work by grabbing, especially if you dont stop after insufficient cuts, another advantage is opponent is less tense then when facing two handed sword.

It's honestly crazy how similar of a setting this is to when I fenced with my instructor. Only difference being fact my instructor used a sabre instead of arming sword. I were at the time much more of a passive fencer myself, so the sparring was mostly about distance management. It's honestly crazy how much more important factor it was. Well, many of the final opinions were similar. I do kinda wish that during that sparring I were more aggressive, because not gonna lie it was getting very boring. A lot of dancing back and forward, preparation and programming opponent (primarily me). That's how 90% of the exchanges went

Good match, gentlemen! Mixed weapons are always fun matches! Comments / observations: I'm not sure of the height difference, but Federico seems to have a longer reach than Marco the longsword player, which helps Federico quite a bit in terms of evening the playing field a bit in this matchup (confirmed in commentary at end of video). I really enjoyed the punch from Marco the longsword player when it came to grips. Would love to see a pommel strike next time if it comes to grips. Some of Marco's longsword "hits" which were counted were quite weak, really just touches, e.g., extending the reach of the longsword by going to one hand and all the way out on the pommel... which can work for a thrust but you're really not going to get a cut in with that "trick" technique. At my school the person delivering that kind of light touch would have said, "insufficient" upon realizing it, and not counted it as a hit. IMO, Federico delivered more "quality" hits.

One thing a lot of people don’t realize about him having a shield, is that later on arming swords were probably used by themselves against long swords, only in full plate armor. Meaning a lot of the whacks the arming sword would take wouldn’t be very effective, the would hurt like Hell, sure. But one the arming sword closes the distance he’ll just tackle and jam the arming sword’s point though the long sword guy’s visor. Not to diss the long sword, all I’m saying is using the arming sword like this is semi realistic. I would also like to point out in tighter quarters the arming sword could be used to bloody effect by drawing it quickly the long sword would take forever to draw comparatively.
