Armored Core has never had co op solely because From puts so much effort into the balance of individual missions. While some missions are designed to be easy so they can be farmed for credits, some missions are *hard* - certain missions across the series are legendary because they are genuinely unbeatable for some players. That is not a bad thing, because the bosses are always fair despite their difficulty, and it's part of what makes Armored Core, AC. Fights such as White Glint, Silent Avalanche, and the Occupation of Arteria Carpals are what makes the series so fondly remembered the same as fights in the Souls series; they establish a deep emotional resonance while simultaneously kicking your teeth in. Adding co op would change that balance - and no, adjusting health and damage values for enemies would not be the remedy some people think it is. As a long time AC fan, I would be very worried if From announced co op for an AC game. Unless it worked something like Spec Ops from the Modern Warfare series, I would never want a co op campaign for Armored Core.

"Show don't Tell," is the antithesis of JRPGs and Japanese media. I think this is why I love FromSoft. They actually show, don't tell. Instead of relying on flashbacks and internal monologues, they respect the audience/player - arguably too much!
@CombativeRoboGuy Жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct. I love how they genuinely use show don’t tell while I feel like, even my favorite Japanese media, will tell me things that they could have shown me and the fact that fromsoft trusts the player so much to go look for the story is just amazing.
@elk3407 Жыл бұрын
It's important to understand WHY they do it that way. It's two reasons. One: Miyazaki's childhood of reading western fantasy but only understanding maybe half the words and filling in the gaps with imagination. Two: Japanese arthouse, with a distinctive inspiration from Mamoru Oshii's arthouse works like the Kerberos Panzer Cops series and, of course, Angels Egg. The latter even had a massive tribute in DS3, and is likely as if not more important to Dark Souls being Dark Souls as Berzerk.
@MissPlayAndWatch Жыл бұрын
I understand making that claim of JRPGs but of all Japanese media, like come on. Even the super popular stuff in the west does a ton of showing not telling. Studio Ghibli movies, Satoshi Kon's work, the original Ghost in the Shell movie all spend a ton of time setting the mood and letting the audience feel the situation instead of explaining it all away. This is just xenophobia with extra steps.
@christopherlyndsay8611 Жыл бұрын
I’d argue AC6 is more show than tell. But the difference with other media is that it often tells you second hand, or implies key details. For example, for the most part it’s never outright stated that Rusty is a part of the Liberation Front, but is implied when he states ‘Rubicon still needs me’.

I longed for higher difficulty in a game during quarantine, and so I bought Dark Souls Remastered. Apparently, my brain REALLY likes that game's combat, and I first-tried THE MAJORITY of those bosses, including Knight Artorias. That sold me on the Quality fromsoftware could achieve, so then when AC6 came out I got it, played 28 hours in the first two days, and got all three endings by the end of the week. I went from struggling for 6 hours on Balteus to First-trying Ibis on my second playthrough.

I wasn't necessarily a fan of Souls, but I was a fan of the unique way in which FromSoftware incorporates challenges into their games. They are walls that demand you find your niche in the world and refine it so you can be more lethal than your enemy. A pure game to me is one that is able to present the player with challenges, show them the tools they have to overcome them, and setup engaging and entertaining scenarios for people to engage with the previously mentioned aspects. FromSoftware nails this with every game they make. Their games feel like fine tuned sandboxes begging the player to think of a new way to kill the big bad. Peak gaming.

you just made something click for me that i could feel while playing, but couldn't really put into words(still can't honestly). my favorite Fromsoft game is Sekiro, and this game made me feel like sekiro would have been more "accepted" if each major boss had it's own chapter, and each zone leading up to the boss was broken down into missions(the AC/Heavy MT fights would basically be the same as mini-boss fights in sekiro). at the same time, I would have loved to see how Rubicon (each continent is tied together by actually traversing the world myself).f0r example jumping into the darkness to find Mibu village = to finding the old ruins where the coral was concentrating. this just makes me hopeful for armored core's future,.... if they can "open world" this experience in the sekiro style it would be so awesome...............just imagine this games NG+ changes just from revisiting the sight of previous missions. This game isn't what i'd call a "soulslike,......that title should be replaced with a "FROM-like"...... or hell I'd even say Miyazaki-like". at this point the guy could make his own gaming studio, and single handedly change gamin'g's current directiion. P.S........I'd LOVE to see a "let me solo her" logo in AC-6...... I would make it my self if didn't have to log into the game to do it. I'm too tempted to blow stuff up while it's on, even though i'm a graphic artrist/illustrator......ATM blowing shit up in AC6 is more powerful than my urge to create

I feel the need to mention a few things, as a long time Armored Core fan (I got my copy of AC1 around the time Project Phantasma came out): Armored Core is the story of a mercenary. A character who doesn't get out of bed unless they're getting paid. You get in your mech, get transported to the combat zone, do what you're paid to do, and leave. Making it into an open world game completely defeats that. Also, you DO go back to previous areas. The early mission in Chapter 1 where you need to go clean up Grid 135 is an example. If you turn around at the start, you'll see the catapult from the tutorial mission. And it might make you curious if you can get back to where you crash landed and what that looks like. And to say Armored Core is a "Miyazaki-like" is hilarious. Miyazaki's first work at Fromsoft was on Armored Core: Last Raven. Which was the tenth entry in the series. His first job as Director was for the 4th gen, which has his signature storytelling. But he built off of Armored Core. As an example, there's some evidence that the code that handles tracking the amount of souls the player has is actually a slightly modified version of the code used to rank your performance in Armored Core. Awarding different amount of points for killing different types of enemies, sometimes with modifiers for how those enemies are killed, and then losing those points when you die? Does that sound familiar at all? Armored Core keeps getting tweaked and modified and updated, with new mechanics and takes on the gameplay. Everyone has their favorites. But every game has a number of common themes about war, concentration of power, corruption, the unforgiving nature of the world, and more. No matter the setting, or what's going on, you'll always find those. It's a lot like Final Fantasy in that sense. Both franchises tell different stories with different mechanics for each generation. But both also have their common themes that run through their entire franchise.

But I was always curious about Armored Core because I've been a mecha anime fan for a while and I felt we didn't have good mecha games easily available (and stuff that was, like a lot of Gundam games weren't really for me). I've tried the first game for a couple of hours and was enjoying myself, but my graphics card broke and I couldn't even try other games cause I don't own the platforms they are in (PLEASE Fromsoft/Bamco, rerelease the other games in the series!). I say thanks to Gundam if anything for the appreciation of mechs. With AC6, it's definitely my top game at the moment, considering that there isn't a whole lot of mecha games that have succeeded or not tapped into(there are BIG exceptions: Titanfall, Mech Warrior, and whatever else deemed as "success"). I thought it was a genius move to not rate you on missions unless you specifically go through the “Replay Mission” tab. It could easily be a bit demoralizing or frustrating, especially on your first play through, to get through a tough mission just to get a bad rating and the odds are good that you wouldn’t be getting too many good ratings on your first run. So instead they skip the rating so you can just focus on playing, learning, and having a good time.
@Krystalmyth Жыл бұрын
Nah, players who play action games are used to being graded in games and I was very dissappointed by this. Even more so during NG+ Missions because you still don't get ranked even though you are doing those missions again. You HAVE to play them during Replay Mission for your performance to count and I think that sucks. I don't think anyone pouted over getting a Stone Award in Bayonetta, or a C in Devil May Cry. People aren't THAT sensitive.
@alan133 Жыл бұрын
Eh on my second playthrough I thought I did pretty well on a mission just to find out I need to do it again in the mission replay to make it count in ratings. Not complaining for more Armored Core but that felt slightly artificial time padding I kinda wished for more missions/path but with the amount of assets/maps they have it felt like they got the perfect amount of missions so it doesn't feel like its overused.

@@Krystalmyth Well I'm one of those people who doesn't want to move on if I get a low rating. And yes getting stone ratings was a mild bummer in Bayonetta. Not pouting, but definitely a lack of excitement. And guess what? I'd still have to replay the mission to get a good rating. Very few people are going to be going through S ranking missions first time, so the overwhelming majority of people will have to replay missions for a higher rating anyways. So It's the same experience for most people anyways minus getting told that you did bad at the end of missions.

(EG you could teach it to assault boost in the beginning and apply pressure immediately) In Ac5 it had a more in depth multiplayer which was its one saving grace. I like the fact we have a basic one but some ideas from 5 I feel like could be expanded on. I much prefer Armored Core 6 over Elden Ring surprisingly. Compared to other open world games, I feel like Elden Ring lacked the cohesiveness that brings other open world games together (Witcher 3, Ghost of Tsushima), where the strong narrative and fleshed-out lore makes you want to seek out quests and complete them. Armored Core's gameplay is much more accessible, while still delivering some of the frustratingly difficult enemy encounters FromSoft is known for.

From Software story telling is kind of similiar to typemoon. only show bare minimum of the story/lore and sometimes dump exposition here and there. and let the reader on their own. its no prob whether the reader will take that lore dump or just move on with their pace. thats why it can take a lot range of fans. people who looking for gameplay, who looking for story (lore), who looking for challenging gameplay, who liked to roleplay, who liked to use multiplayer. as in typemoon, who liked loli, who liked depth story, who liked action, who liked slice of life anime genre, who liked comedy, who liked por:n, who liked waifu, roman etc. story is a must in japanese media, even if its just a simple package as a lore. also armored core costumization is one is the best imo, its always up to your prefered custom, newer available "part" didnt make the olds "part obsolete" /things that usualy found in rpg level progression. this is also my first AC btw, really loved it!

As a fan of both AC6 and the souls like games, I really recommend you play Sekiro. AC6 really extends Sekiro's flow of the enemy imposing itself on you, and you imposing yourself on the enemy in response. It really makes sense that Armored Core 6's director is the same as Sekiro.
@hotcyder Жыл бұрын
Ya know I've always been interested giving it a try, and if the speed is similar to AC6 that bodes well. Maybe I will!
@HollowKnight21 Жыл бұрын
Slight correction: the lead combat designer of Sekiro is the director of AC6. Miyazaki himself directed Sekiro. Still a pretty big achievement, considering Sekiro probably has the greatest combat system ever. Happy to see him translate that to Armored Core 6, this time as the director.

Right, the NG+ & NG++ is something unique depending on the path the player finished first. Not the ending specifically, but each player probably had a different NG++ feeling depending on the first playthrough.

I've been a fromsoftware fan for a while now, bloodborne is my favorite game of all time. but when I played elden ring, although I realy liked the firs houra of it, I got increasingly tired as i played. I felt like elden ring was one of those rare cases where the game felt too long, and whennever I got to a new area and had to do a bunch of dungeons with thensame overall structure, fight a bunch of dragons with the same moveset, it kind of drained me. That said, when they announced AC6 I was kind of happy that they decided not to go for a sequel of sorts since elden ring was such a massive sucess, although I wasn't realy that excites, I hadn't played the older AC games, I'm not big on emulation, and getting the games for older consoles is expensive to say the least. regardless I decided to play AC6 when it released, and oh boy, am I glad I did. It is a fenomenal game, and it was a great way to introduce me to the franchise, its one of the best games I played this year and so far, there's been a whole lot of goot games this year. As for anyone who want's to play a game with a similar "vibe" I'd sugest trying out ace combat 7, I get from it the same thrill I got when playing armored core even though jets might not be as appealing to some people as giant robots are... also you get to say you played AC7 right after AC6 which is fun to confuse people
@hotcyder Жыл бұрын
Very similar to you with Elden - was excited to get into it but Open World fatigue killed a lot of the fun for me (replaying Demons' Souls PS3 and DS1 again at the time really put into perspective how well they work). AC6 I totally adored for how lean it was. and I've seen a few people reccomend the Ace Combat series so I'm keen to give it a go!

this is one trap i see alot of poeple falling into. don't assume you can beat anything (reasonably) with any approach is what fromsoft is going for here. some builds/weapons vs certain bosses is night and day. you can fight with whatever you choose, but the enjoyment and time consumption is going to be very different to those that found the best option. to the point were if you want, you could treat the game like a puzzler and just find the best counter to each of the major fights. cause that is very much how it is later when you have access to large portions of the gear available to buy/find. edit: or default to duel needlers lol, but honestly. that does get old. should rename the weapon "easy mode" to shut up critics.
@hotcyder Жыл бұрын
I've had a lot of fun hopping into the AC communities and discovering certain builds are better for particular fights. Again, really great how quickly you can rebuild your mech and try out something new (and usually get rewarded for doing so!)
