While I like the idea of debt in ac games, I've literally never interacted with it. I'm not even good at these games but I've played every gen but 5 and I have never once even come close to going into debt. Most people I see upset about the debt mechanic being gone are ac vets that will likely never fail enough to even come close to being in debt. Which I just find kind of silly

@leftovernoise it's more about the threat. Like I never got into bad debt. But I never got into debt because i had to think around it. Also it just adds to the feel of the game. It let's you get more into the role

@@leftovernoise I imagine it adds tension, a feeling of risk and reward, consequences for failure. The 'possibility' of something happening changes an individuals mindset, adds atmosphere and as one reply already stated, helps one get into the mindset of the role in a gameplay one as well, something From excels in. Making you feel how they wish you to.

Regarding the "less pleasant topic", as a long time Armored Core fan, I'm just happy that an entire generation of people who never knew about Armored Core will get to experience it for the first time The joy of piloting a mech, The power of those boosts, The joy of spending hours and hours and hours in the garage, That's something I always wished I could share with more people and, now that Armored Core 6 is coming out, I finally can! It delights me to no end that people like you, Vaati, or Iron Pineapple will get to play it and join in on the discussion and post videos on it. And I'm sure people like the Armored Core legacy team would agree with me. I'm sure most veteran Armored Core fans will agree with me even. So don't let the grumbling of a minority discourage you all. Most of us will welcome you with open arms. As for their reasoning, a lot of this is Armored Core fans feeling upset that Dark Souls and the Dark Souls community has been the favorite child while Armored Core lay seemingly forgotten by FromSoftware. And now that same Dark Souls community that they envied will replace them and become the new Armored Core community due to sheer numeric superiority. And all the culture of the old Armored Core community will be replaced by the culture of the Dark Souls community, who will replace them as the new Armored Core community. I've heard someone describe it as "we're being gentrified" And while I'm not unsympathetic to their plight, I think there's no excuse for being hostile or condescending to new players. I think a true AC fan would be glad to share the game with everyone. I, for one, welcome all the new players and am excited that so many people are gaining an interest in Armored Core.
@Sorain1
@Sorain1 Жыл бұрын
There will always be those who decide to lash out and be jerks about change. That minority makes a lot of noise, as they always have and always will. Armored Core never had some singular central community, it predates such things being really possible. Not even when AC 5/VD multiplayer formed a community was it centralized in the manner required for this to be 'gentrification' like that. Observation of reality tells us that, with each new generation of the game, a different audience forms around it. Since Nexus, the first major change to formula, that has happened each time. The idea that the souls community will 'replace' the AC community doesn't hold up to scrutiny. Nothing prevents someone from liking both, or simply liking parts of the Fromsoft design formula that are present in everything they have done. When things settle down, the squeaky wheels will either be silenced by themselves or cast out naturally. Because the community is about a mutual like, not a mutual hate.
@Shinkirou_
@Shinkirou_ Жыл бұрын
@@Sorain1 Yeah, each gen has had it's divide, even before this. You had the AC1~AC3 elitists who looked down on the people who started in the PS3 era (AC4 onwards), acting like "ravens" were superior to the casual "lynxes" who never played "the real Armored Core." But as usual, those people were the minority, and, as long as you have fun, it's their loss. Armored Core 6's release actually reminds me a lot about Monster Hunter World and how people grumbled about that game prior to release. But after the release, those negative voices were generally drowned out. I suspect the same thing will happen with Armored Core 6.

In Dune, Melange doesn't have mystical properties like that. It somewhat has religious significance to the Fremen (the natives), because it is tied to the sandworms (Shai-Hulud), but they still sell it to smugglers and give it as bribes to the Guild. What it has is an array of health benefits and mind/awareness effects for most people and unlocks potential for a few (it's tied to Paul's burgeoning prescience, and the prescient ability Navigators have), at the cost of creating an extreme addiction. It's not sentient in any way. If Coral is inspired by Melange, it could be giving some of the natives a big picture awareness the natives don't have, and that might be what some of that dialogue is.

Isn't The Water of Life from Arrakis the one that does have mystical properties?
@brianwagner781
@brianwagner781 Жыл бұрын
@@Dracobyte sort of. Even that is presented in a more science fiction than mystical way. It unlocks genetic memory for Reverend Mothers. But bc it's a strong poison that presents a bodily crisis and forces the woman to draw on resources that were before just out of reach. Other poisons had worked for that purpose before in the Duniverse. Paul becomes a full Kwisatz Haderach much the same way. These things have religious significance to Fremen, but aren't ultimately explained as mystical.

I think the connection being made is that melange in dune is an allegory for oil in our world. So he's making the connection between melange and coral being metaphors for the same thing. There are more then one way to be "inspired" by something.

@@jmc2830 at this point I don't remember many details of this video. But I don't think I was arguing that Coral wouldn't have been inspired by Dune's Melange. I think the video speculated it might turn out Coral is sentient and has other mystical properties. So I was trying to clarify stuff about Melange. You're right though, Melange clearly was (among other things) an allegory for oil. And Armored Core's Coral could share some of those connections. Haven't played it.

Art direction > graphics. It'll be nice when the technical side catches up to their direction, but even if From is a little behind, the worlds and creatures they create are still far more intriguing and inspiring than just about anything else out there. Though on that technical front, I've noticed that the recent footage seems pretty weak in terms of ambient occlusion. It's possible they've tuned the settings down for the demos to maintain good performance, and the final release might allow you to increase that setting. As seen in Elden Ring, they're starting to dabble in ray tracing, but I'd really like to see them dip their toes in DLSS/FSR/XeSS.

The craziest thing about the dlc for Elden Ring is that as is tradition it will be the best part of the game. Which is insane to me since that initial playthrough of Elden ring is the most fun I've had with a game ever. Knowing the best is yet to come is why from soft is the best studio working right now.

i feel like the talking comes more from a place of emulating mecha anime, like if you watch stuff like gundam or macross plus the characters talk a lot during the fighting, thats kind of how i see armored core, like an emulation of these traits, so to me as fan of these shows it ends up adding to the appeal of it being a mecha game, thats also how i feel about ace combat, but idk maybe im just stretching
@Shinkirou_
@Shinkirou_ Жыл бұрын
This. It's a very "mech anime" trope, where pilots will size each other up before and during a "dogfight", and shit-talk each other, and yell out their last dying words before going down. It often draws inspiration from real life ace pilots, some of which historically, were very cocky and competitive. And that's part of the appeal, because one of the goals of Armored Core is to make things feel as "mech-like" as possible: from the way the mech moves and feels, down to tropes like these.

Though I think my favourite game is a toss up between Silent Line and Last Raven, I have to say Verdict Day has always lingered in my mind just for that gamefeel. Any time I'm not playing VD, I'm thinking about how good the mobility feels in that game when you learn how to use it. Also I will say now, I am like 80% sure most people who are complaining and gatekeeping aren't the real vets who love the series and want to see it prosper, but rather people who hopped on recently, played 4A and decided that it's the true AC game and everything else sucks. Usually easily noticed by their immediate hatred for gen 5 for not having booster flight and their compulsion to tell you about how "YO ARMORED CORE IS SO FAST BRO IT'S SUPER DUPER FAST AND SPEEDY AND YOU FLY AROUND AND IT'S SO FAST"

I would so much love a survival horror game from fromsoft. In all the modern fromsoft games you climb your way from the bottom from the top and I would love a game where you stay at the bottom. Its not beat the world, beat the bosses. Its survive, fight as little as possible, sneak past enemy's gather tools and skills and make your way to the end, outsmart the world do not overpower it. There is this concept I had for an elden ring mod, where all the demigods where true gods and a tarnished would never be able to get on their level. I wanted the goal to be to get these godly weapons by sneaking around the world and get that lighting spear from the captital as an almost one shot but consumable weapon. The vibe of it all would be so different, it would feel oppressive but where the world may overpower you it can also overpower itself. I would also make it so that dying truly does not reset the world, boss health bars do not regenerate but might just be 100times bigger. So incremental succes could be a thing, this feels more accurate to the way respawning works in these games. I am however not a modder so I am afraid this will never see the light of day.

I only started playing Dark Souls Remastered a couple of days ago. After having played almost everything else by FromSoft. It's much better than I was expecting. Just because it LOOKS old, that doesn't mean it will FEEL outdated. As a level designer I'm really enjoying exploring it. And would definitely recommend the more curious and open-minded people to start with the first one. It makes me sympathize with the veterans who are still attached to the way the first installment was designed. It plays wonderfully. And leans more towards exploration than DS2 or DS3. But the best advice I can give is to just start with whatever interests you most. The rest is always going to be there afterwards...

For the "should you play older games" bit, I think it's a fair assumption to say this will be the penultimate armored core game that will be the best for people new to the series. Similar to elden ring I think the goal of AC6 is to combine all of the best aspects of previous games and make them work in fluidity. Additionally, I think Armored Core is sort of a parallel to the doom franchise, in that every generation of the series there is a distinct evolution or tone change. And much like doom eternal, it's taking a lot of the franchise's traits and putting them all in one game.

Not everyone that does this is an asshole on purpose but they don't have the social maturity to know what they are doing is childish at best. Its not all one size fits all either. Most common cause are the ones trying to assert their knowledge as something to show off when no one asked. As an experienced AC player, I will say that back in 4 gen there was no longer an opportunity to go into debt, there was always enough money to buy a few parts. And besides, you hardly think about the cost of wasting ammunition in 4 gen. Ammunition in AC4 and ACFA almost never ran out, there was always enough. Except for missions where you have to fight with other AC pilots. In general, from what I've heard and seen about AC6, it's literally 4 gen with some significant changes and I'm honestly happy with it (Although I don't think 4 gen is the best. It changed too much in the series. But these changes weren't bad. Still i think 3 gen was the peak for the series. ). And the funny thing is that many fans can't stand it when AC6 is compared to souls games, I don't care about such comparisons. And honestly I love both the AC series and all the new FromSoftware games. I just want a NEW. MODERN. AC GAME!

FromSoft became my favorite developer because they put out banger after banger and their development time usually wasn't very long. Usually big studios develop a game for 5 to 10 years and even then there are times when the end product turns out mediocre or just plain broken. Compared to that From dishes out excellent titles every other year which is mind boggling to me. I think that's why the wait for Elden ring was so painful. From really spoils us with content and we weren't used to waiting this long for releases. The same applies for the Elden ring DLC.

When we do, it's either because the game has been pushed too early, or because of incompetent devs. To be honest, the only generation I think has "bad graphics" is the PS1 era, and more specifically the 3D games. 2d games are timeless, early 3d ones aren't.

We do have games with bad graphics, and as a reviewer it's your job to point out bad graphics. Halo Infinite has bad graphics. Armored Core 6 has ok/good graphics. Call of Duty has great graphics. If you don't understand what makes graphics good or bad, then you should research and look into what goes into graphics. Look at the graphical settings of a video game and learn what each one does and what the game looks like when you change each one.

I do understand what they do, I'm saying "bad graphics" does not make much sense. It's an umbrella term that does not indicate precisely what looks off to someone. Is it the lightning, the color palette, the aliasing, the textures, visual effects, the artstyle... See, I would say Halo Infinite looks "ok". It's not groundbreaking, but it's serviceable for what I've seen. I also think multiplayer FPS games need to keep some visual clarity, therefore I don't mind it. As an example, would you say Valorant looks bad ? It's pretty simple visually for improved visual clarity. The artstyle makes it pleasing to look at, but it's by no means up to the latest releases.

Fextra is good as a repository for dry information, that's it. Their ER builds invariably follow the "set yourself up to spam one thing and miss the point of the game completely" philosophy, and in a fundamental way this resonates with their trash take about graphics

The first FromSoft attempt to make a game was an mech game. Appears they love that genre maybe this is why we gonna have the 16th game and just stop at Dark Souls 3, even when there is not reason to make more AC games.

Tbf, it seems that older AC games have gameplay mechanics that AC6 doesn't. Even if they're janky by today's standards, they seem fun to play.

Ac games 1-3 are vastly different from 4 and more so from 5. As we've seen 6 will be WAT more different. With that tho, even 1-3, I had my best experiences with ac1 and last raven (ironic those were the first and last i know, didn't realise till I wrote this comment) while the others felt more of the same thing with the obvious graphic updates. The mechanics changing made them just different rather than sequels adding on more features. I see a lot of people want to try ac series and just assume ac1 and 2 would just be the worst cause all these other games came out to perfect the formula. But really they should look at each number like ac3, or ac4 theses come out with sequels before the next number that usually make improvements. The comment about playing ac6 first to get the concepts of ac for previous games is very accurate and i think more people will appreciate the older games after 6.

On the hostility from some AC fans. I think alot of them felt as though the IP had been abandoned by From. So for a new entry to come, but it then be (in their eyes) just another souls game it would feel like the ultimate betrayal and a confirmation that the IP is truly dead. Not how I feel about the topic, just psychoanalyzing folks. I for one am looking forwards to it and cant wait for it to release.

Why not take both and not be satisfied with the bare minimum? The modern gaming landscape has seemingly lowered everyone's standards, a good game needs both good performance and good graphics (which can include art style). There are dozens of masterpieces and respectable developers that can do this, are you trying to say Fromsoft isn't capable of something that other great developers are?

They seem to be using controlled and trained humans rather than what could be a perfect ai and ais simply being unmentioned as main enemies in the world besides with balteus is kinda suspicious. after they were such a big component of other ac games, I think maybe the reason they use humans rather than an ai is because an ai experimenting with coral was the reason for the fires of ibis. You also bring up the idea that coral could be alive. So is it like the book “gone” (Michael grant) where the creature/ai merged with the coral and is sitting behind the scenes trying to control holding of it? Because if coral can have psychological effects on a human, and boosting powers on technology, could it mess with the system of an ai? It sounds kinda crazy but I could see that being the villain behind the scenes.

Funny enough, I thought about that, "What if I could ask Miyazaki a question?" thing recently. Of course I have endless pet lore theories. But even just getting to a point where he would understand my perspective in order to reasonably answer a question would be a pretty big time sink. Like, "How do crystals relate to souls?" might not even be a meaningful perspective in his mind. Maybe it's the wrong framing for the question, ya know? So I think that asking some kind of clarifying question about his own perspective would be best. "Would you change something about X?" "Is there something missing from Y?" "What's the thing you paid the most attention to for Z?" That sort of thing. As for me, the question I would ask is, "Have you ever noticed how similar Marika is to a middle aged Japanese game developer?" I think that whatever response to that I got would be enlightening.

I think the most interesting question to ask would be "What design decision would you undo if you could?" Because the why's would be fascinating. Similar to "What design decision would you do sooner if you could?"
@rainbowkrampus
@rainbowkrampus Жыл бұрын
@@Sorain1 Oh man, yeah, but like as an artist I wouldn't want to be asked that. It's easy to obsess over the woulda, coulda, shouldas and it can lead to some really toxic places. So most people who are successful in a creative field learn to just let that sort of thing exist in the past as is. It'd be kinda like going up to someone and punching an obvious bruise on their body. I just wouldn't ask it, personally. "What design decision would you do sooner if you could?" This is a more... approachable question. Though I think we'd find the answer a little boring. All of these games are iterative. So hitting on the posture system, as a random example, and sticking it in DS1 might not be something audiences and the development team were really ready for. Like, sure, you have the system. But what does that mean for the rest of your game that is largely derived from lessons learned while developing Demon's Souls and King's Field. Some people like to say that they were born in the wrong era. Personally I think that's cope. The past is a foreign country and the future is a black box. We are only really equipped to deal with the here and now.

I hope the bosses have better tells than in ER because I feel like they dropped the ball a bit at the end of ER for the bosses compared to their other games. For example I've fought Malenia like 200 times at this point and there's this one attack (a standing slash) which is incredibly fast around 5-10 frame or something (but it's reactable if you start the dodge immediately), however the startup it has an animation that matches a couple of other possible attacks and if you want to parry it you'll get hit before it's really clear which flowchart she's going to go down. I remember it being a frustration after what was mostly a great experience. In contrast it's always clear what Orphan of Kos/Maria/Soul of Cinder/Isshin are doing but in ER there were a number of confusing moments and I didn't feel as if I was in a flow state as much compared to the previous games.

personally i just see absurd attacks on ac as the dead throws of the western games industry. desperately trying to jump on the coat tales of fromsoft by convincing them to ditch their tech for western tech. from their perspective, it must be a massive hit to ego to see this company ignore all their "industry standards" and still make extremely successful games. it may seem random, but when multiple sources all all same the same absurdities you can be at least a little suspicious about it's intention.

I guess the thing is when someone is a jerk who wants to trash talk new fans coming into their game they're probably both: not actually that good at Armored Core and scared they're going to get outskilled by a bunch of new players, and leaving that comment in as many places as possible so they look like there are more of them than there are.

I honestly don't think there's enough of a multiplayer community for that to be a major factor here. Only 5/VD had a real focus on that, and it was limited in scope by the platform exclusivity. But then again, emotional reactions don't run on rational thought.

it shouldn't be too hard for you guys especially to understand the AC elitist mindset, even if I think they're wrong here. Imagine souls dies, and you get a new souls game after 10 years, and when it comes out it turns out it's a mobile afk RPG full of microtransactions because that's what's popular and modern right now. I don't really care if my girlfriend can play souls now, rather I'll try and keep her away from that stuff. The AC elitist is misguided, but don't pretend you don't understand him at all.
