@southronjr1570
@southronjr1570 Жыл бұрын
Unless either the putput or main engine is running, the hydraulics won't work. Do wish he has shown them, the M4 even had a VERY advanced hyrdaulic floating elevation control. Basically it would allow the gunner (not the aimer) to track targets while the vehicle was moving whereas no other early WW2 tank had that, they would all have to stop to be able to get off an aimed round. These days all modern tanks I am aware of have both elevation and traverse target tracking systems to allow them to shoot on the move even at full speed over rough terrain.

There seems to be some confusion. This is a 105mm bunker buster. Uncommon but still more numerous than most German tanks. A specielty modification. Due to size and role there is no stabilizer or electric traverse. Every other variant (75 and 76mm) has electronic traverse run by a battery (engine charges, doesn't run it) that can 360 in 15 seconds. Normal travers is about 30-60 seconds between full and casual speed.
@homie8437
@homie8437 5 ай бұрын
Hydraulic. T-34 had an electronic traverse, but most German and US tanks used hydraulic traverse. ETA: The most common (and preferred) was the Oilgear hydraulic traverse with electric motor. There was also a Westinghouse fully electric traverse but it was not as popular and pretty much all 76mm have Oilgear.
@nicholaspratt8473
@nicholaspratt8473 5 ай бұрын
@homie8437 saying hydraulic is misleading. The Panthers' direct drive traverse is linked to the drive shaft, and momentary speed is a factor of RPM, thus causing inconsistent adjustment and even more excessive fuel waste in operation. Yes, the 85 had powered traverse, but mostly post-war. The function of post-war T-34-85s is usually conflated with the performance of WWII T-34s. These are not even similar tanks, only in appearance. Crazy what another 14 years of peace time production can do. The claim that only the T-34 had an electronic traverse is also misleading. The Sherman uses a battery-powered traverse. This means it is independent of RPM. That is all. Shermans had this throughout the war. Not 1 tank with a traverse for 10 whole months. Too little, too late, when it works, if it works

I got lucky enough to be drafted in an amror division during my conscription period in the Greek army. I was trained as a driver and I was one of the very few that got to actually drive a tank during two summer exercises. I have to say, it was an absolutely amazing feeling. One thing you mentioned about the visibility when the hatches are closed is that the visibility is absolutely dismal... As a driver you have 4 small mirrors to the outside and it's next to impossible to see anything and drive properly without the help of the tank commander. The last thing I see it is very different in the video when compared to my experience is that a us WW2 era tank is very spacious. I personally come at a huge frame (for a tanker) of 1.89m tall and I could barely fit in the driver space. Other guys in the crew were smaller at ~1.60-70 and we're still a tight fit for all the other positions. This is fascinating to me because a Leopard 2 is bigger than the tank in the video but apparently way more cramped. Very nice and interesting video

It’s an M4A3 105, a specialized support tank that would lob 105 mm HE shells at buildings and fortifications in support of troops/ bunker busting, which was better than the smaller 75s. It wasn’t really a tank killer though as far as I’m concerned. And because of the dimensions of the gun, I don’t think they added a power traverse, which is why it rotates so slow in real life and in war thunder.

Sorta not really. This is the 105 variant. All other variants had hand cranks as well as hydraulics. The reason this one doesn’t have hydraulics is because it’s designed to attack sitting targets where you would want to point your frontal armor at the target anyway and you only need fine control of the hand crank. Other variants would be expected to attack moving targets and so the hydraulics would be used to point at the enemy and then hand crank again for fine control. Later models of this tank had electric motors retrofitted for traverse.

@AnarexicSumo

Sorts not really, at least for the Sherman. The reason for the hand crank was for fine control since the hydraulics were too quick and aggressive for aiming. The reason this variant has no hydraulics is because it’s designed to attack static targets where you can just point the front of the tank at the target which you want to do anyway and only need fine control.
