I’ve found that a for the air jet a 10mm x 100mm bolt can be drilled in a drill press and threaded into the air inlet hose barb. Makes it easy to adjust the gap behind the ceramic nozzle and it’s workable for someone without a lathe. I’ve used this video and built a nice nozzle for my 5hp compressor that works well with a 3/32 air jet and a 6mm nozzle.

Slide some thin medical rubber tubing over your air needle all the way to your 45deg end , it will last longer as the slurry enters it will hit the air needle at a harsh angle the rubber will absorb the impact and abrasion, after thirty years of blasting this one tip saved me thousands on premature boron tip replacements 👍

All the cheap ebay/ali express nozzles have that. I never bothered because I have never had one wear out. The slurry with glass bead is so much softer than dry blasting medias. I have one nozzle thats 4 years old and still has the same air jet and pink alumina ceramic tip.

Great video . Can this be used on a normal media blaster with 40 grit garnet . And does the hole go completely through or is the simple on the end just to assist on the lathe Just been through the comments and found the media answer and will look at the drawing . Thanks for sharing this build . im looking for something to update my blaster but dont see the need to pay mega money on a huge flow gun .

Hey Gary, Yeah it was surprising how often I got this question. I am yet to do any extensive testing but initial experiments look positive. The most conclusive (at least in my non scientific mind) evidence so far is the improvements in wet blasting over the standard guns. Are you referring to the hole in the aluminium air needle? If so, yes it goes right through. There should be enough info in my videos to build one, but if you get stuck, all the info is available here: armoury-enterprises.myshopify.com/products/diy-vapor-blasting-guns Thanks for watching!

Hey josh I just made one of these nozzle/guns exactly as you did in this video. Unfortunately I made a small error when drilling the 5mm hole, I went a tad too far and so instead of my 2.5mm hole being 15mm in depth it’s actually only 5mm depth. Can you see this being an issue? No problem if so as I have a lathe and could make another one. My unit isn’t set up yet so can’t test it. Cheers
@ArmouryEnterprises
@ArmouryEnterprises 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, You may get away with it. The longer hole just narrows the stream a little, but there are turbulence regardless so the gains are not exactly game changing. With vapour blaster guns being positively fed, it shouldn't create to big an issue. I would just run it and if you feel like its not performing right, try remaking that part. Cheers Josh

@@ArmouryEnterprises thanks Josh. How much clearance do you leave between the air nozzle and ceramic tip? I chamfered the nozzle to match the tapered section of the ceramic tip - do the two parts need to be seated together to work efficiently or is a small gap necessary?

@ArmouryEnterprises
@ArmouryEnterprises 5 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for the question. The two things that you could change are the air jet diameter and the distance between the end of the air jet and the ceramic tip. Although it should in theory work in the configuration shown in the video. Check out the latest video on sandblasting cabinet mods (Kawasaki spanner restoration vid) if possible, I would recommend a pressure fed metering valve. Hope this helps.

Hi Josh, Great job on these videos. You are really boosting this community. I'll try building this myself without a lathe and have a few questions, if you've got time. - What is the diameter of the stud used for the needle? And what do you thread the end to? I don't have that many threading or tapping tools, so it would be great to use the same dimensions as you do here. I would prefer not to machine the tip of the needle as you do, was that only necessary because you didn't drill out the coupling (I'll still taper the tip though)? - Do you reckon a threaded stud as the needle would limit the flow of the slurry? - Is the coupler just a 1/2" to 1/2" with a compression nut? - Is it possible to just use two 1/2" barbed fittings - One instead of tapping the end cap + a 1/4" barbed fitting (or maybe a 1/2" won't seal up?), and one instead of the buteline fitting (or is it just better to strip a buteline?)? Thank you again for your videos! Cheers, Jonas
@ArmouryEnterprises
@ArmouryEnterprises 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonas, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The air needle used is 3/8ths, or 9.5mm works too, but make sure that it will match the intter diameter of whatever hose barb you use. the brass and aluminium seem to be fairly forgiving in what size tap you use. I have had success with both 3/8th UNF and m10x1.0, and m10x1.5. It is good to taper the tip to follow the contour of the ceramic because you want the tip of the air needle quite close without obstructing the slurry flow past the end. You can put it in a battery drill and file it. Yes, you can use 1/2"barbed fittings for both on some inline filters. The Chinese imports have a different thread so it needs the cap to be drilled and tapped. Thanks for watching!

I made the air needle with a 5 mm hole while the blasternozzle is only 6mm. this seems to put over pressure and push the water back. Will i have to make the air needle hole diameter much smaller or is the problem with the pump? I put a check valve on the pump but that didn´t help.

@ArmouryEnterprises
@ArmouryEnterprises 5 жыл бұрын
Hey mate. Sorry I thought I had replied to this. This nozzle will work with most blasting materials including baking soda. The size of the nozzle will depend on air volume and the type of blasting. With wet blasting, I usually use the larger. I started with 7mm but it was barely large enough. I now use custom 8mm and 10mm nozzles.

Hi John, Honestly I haven't done enough research to know what differences are achieved with different jet sizes. What I can say is that too small a jet takes much longer to achieve any result. Why make something you can by for $32 at Amazon. That is the complete kit with spare ceramic nozzles
@ArmouryEnterprises
@ArmouryEnterprises 4 жыл бұрын
Because in many places around the world, buying from amazon, ebay or Ali express can take up to a month for your stuff to arrive (That was why I built my first nozzle) And secondly, because the stuff you get from Amazon, ebay or ali generally require massive air supplies in order to function properly. This type of nozzle works much better for smaller, more common compressors, finding a good balance between performance, and conservation of air. Thanks for the critique though.
