Armstrong Foils HA1125 prone surfing UNCUT

One wave riding the Armstrong Foils HA1125. This wing has changed where its possible to prone surf a foil, moving from inside the surf zone to as far out the back as you can pump. Still only a couple session into this wing but starting to find some rythm on the pump, but still figuring out how to turn the wing.

I am still convinced the 1250 is one of the best wings Armstrong made. Plenty fast to get through sections. Plenty lift and pump to keep goin for a while. Plenty carve and shred. Just doesn't handle breaches too well.

Awesome video! Making it look too easy. In fact, it seems like you are barely tapping the board, hardly «doing anything», nose pitch barely changing. Many others are stomping it so hard it looks like they are trying to break it in half (porpoising?) Is this because you «have to» on a HA foil and/or to be able ti maintain that high speed? Do you ever have deeper pumps if you want to accelerate or do you just increase cadence, ie technique stays the same?

Dude well observed! I actually recently posted a how to pump sorta video talking about exactly that. I try and keep the board as level as possible on the down pump to keep as much of my weight going into projecting the foil forward. But yeah the HA foil really makes it easy to keep that speed up, just so much glide and no resistance. I do deeper pumps when I get more aerobically tired. I find the deeper pumps work my legs more so when I get onto a wave I dont have the strength to push turns. While if I do shallow pumps with a higher cadence, I work more aerobically and then on the wave can use my legs more. Have a watch of my other video though, might explain it better!

What size board? What volume? What AR wing? Can u use a smaller board? What is ur weight? What is the weight of ur board? What is smallest possible prone foiling board?

I think a lot of the details about my board are in the description. But yes I could go smaller, but it would be a compromise for paddling into waves. It is always a balance between being able to catch waves easily and being small enough to feel good on the pump. I like a narrower board below 18", and a length around 4'2" @25L, but with the boxes further forward so that you can put your mast further forward which reduces the swing weight of the board and makes it feel smaller.... Also I am 68kg :)

Hey Oscar - love your vids man. I just got the 1125 and the 195 HA tail (also own the 1850 and 300 tail). My mates and I rode it behind the surf boat and found the glide to be amazing and the turning to be surprisingly good, but the high stall speed - whoa! When you hit that speed lookout cuz the wing abruptly drops you, slamming your board to the water’s surface! We rode the gofoil and lift 170 the same day and found them to be much more forgiving with their stall speeds, giving you more of a chance to save your flight with pumping. Have you experienced this abruptness with the 1125? Any tips on dealing with it? I’m wondering if there’s a learning curve for saving it when you get close to the stall speed. Thanks for posting all the vids man. You’re an inspiration!

Hey Rob, stoked to hear you're enjoying the videos! Mate what you're going through is exactly what I went through. Honestly it took me about 4 sessions before I really worked that stall speed out, but now I get back on it and it feels like it has such a low stall speed so there is definitley a transition period with these wings. I think it takes a little time to get a feel for what speed the wing will stall at, and just making sure you're pumps are gentle when you get close to that speed. Keep us posted how you go with it! Your message actually got me inspired to post another uncut video on the 725. I'll try get it done today :)

Hi Oskar - Would you please comment on the MA1225 vs the HA1125 for DW - which would you recommend for most glide and ease of use - any advantages or disadvantages one over the other? Any info would be appreciated!

Hey mate! The biggest advantage of the HA1125 is the speed and glide that is has. For DW this just makes it more efficient and easier to DW and is fast enough to ride the swell bumps and not just the wind bumps. The MA1225 doesn't have the speed or glide of the HA, but it does have a lower stall speed. This makes it easier to get on foil if you are SUP DWing, but also it can go slower without stalling which makes it more forgiving while learning but can also ride the slower wind bumps much easier. If you are not doing DW runs in the ocean and more in a bay or with wind bumps, then I would go for the MA1225. But if you are in the ocean, I would go with the HA1125. It is a little trickier to learn on, but it just glides with the bumps so easily.

Hi Oskar, such a cool video! I am 85kg, intermediate foiler and have the HA1125 on the way. I currently ride a Takuma Kujira 1210 and love it but am switching to Armstrong because I hate the aluminium mast… Do you think the HA1125 is going to be able to replace it? Or should I complete the quiver with a 1550V2 for example? Cheers mate

Hi Lucas! I think the 1125 will be significantly faster and more efficient than the Kujira 1210, but it will come with a higher stall speed. Once you dial in to that you will love it. If you want to turn easier though and focus more on surf performance then I would think about maybe the CF1600V2, that would compare pretty well to the 1125. Or the 1550V2!

Hey sick, how does the HA1125 compare to the THE HIGH SPEED 1050 WING? Would you recommend your set up in this vid to an 20+ year experienced surfer, 70kg, who wants to try foiling for the first time?

Hey Jose! The HS1050 is nothing like the 1125. The 1050 at your weight would be something for larger days, 2-3ft where you wanted to do hard turns, while the HA1125 is a wing that you can just pump around on for those smaller days, or for downwinding. If you want to try foiling for the first time I would go for the HS1250, of HS1550 V2. Both are nice and smooth when taking off, and still have that surfy feel that allow you to take a line like you would surfing, but still have plenty of pump to get back out. I rode the 1250 for ages and is still one of my favourite foils. It just doesn't breach well is all.

HAHA the amount of carbs needed would be high! Now days I can get a similar pump out of the 925 as what I was getting on the 1125, but then the 925 turns so much better.

Sick video! I'm interested in purchasing the HA1125 foil kit, but see on Armstrong's website that they only have the option to get it with an 85cm mast. Do you notice the wing breaching a lot while turning with the 72cm mast since it has such a wide wing span? I definitely don't want an 85cm mast since I'll mostly be prone foiling with it, but wanted to get some advice or recommendations. Thanks

Thaks mate! I have never ridden it with the 85 mast so hard to say. I do breach a bit with the 1125 and 72 mast though, but that wing deals with breaches really well. Overall for prone surfing I like the 72, its a little easier to roll over, but there are plenty of really good guys riping on the longer masts. It gives you some extra room to make mistakes. If youre gonna add towing or winging as well then I would go for the 85 as your all rounder.

I have a CF1200 and CF1600 on a 72cm/27.5" mast and I breach every now and then. I learned on a 24" mast and just couldn't keep it in the water on steep waves and hard turns. 72 is working well at almost every surf break I've tried it on O'ahu for what that info is worth. 85cm may need deeper water but will wing, kite, prone, and tow well. Maybe buy the HA1125 and a mast separate. I bought my gear used for basically 50% and a new wing. Well worth it.

1125 and the HS1550 V2 are fairly similar in the amount of lift they have, but the 1125 has way more pump and glide, but that comes at a cost to the turning capabilities. If you use the 1550 for surfing, the 1125 wouldnt be good as something for pumping around on small days, or downwinding. The 1125 takes some getting used to though so be prepared. Amos Highflier is a great board though. In general with the Amos boards they do better with armstrong if you shim the front of the baseplate to lift the nose a little. Most guys I know say 3-5mm is good on that board. Helps a lot with the pump!

At what point in one's pumping progression do you think it'd be "appropriate" to start riding the HA1125? I'm still on the HS1850, but able to go 30-45 seconds, still perfecting technique. I've got the 1250 too which I rarely pull out bc I feel to "learn" to pump I'm still better off on the 1850, however on progression podcast I've also heard expert foilers discuss that HA wings kind of "teach" you to pump properly. From your point of view and knowing the Armstrong range, what's your take on this?

Tricky question… I like it! No doubt all wings pump differently and have a different cadence and rhythm, but which one is the easiest is tough to say. I think the high aspects are good if you can maintain your speed when pumping. If you’re losing speed on the 1850 at any stage the 1125 will be dead in the water well before that. I would say your first stage is just being stable while pumping. This is just drilling in the movement and being able to relax and ensure that all your weight is being transferred to the foil and not flapping your arms or missing pumps cause you’re off balance. Once you’re stable you can start playing with different wings/timing/foot placement to really start dialing in what works best. You’ll find yourself one day going from 1min to 6 when it all starts to click… but that 1125 has a higher stall speed than the 1250 so make sure you are comfortable on it and keeping your speed up before jumping on the 1125

I think this wing is really good for an intermediate rider! It takes a little more speed to get up and going, but once up it has so much speed and glide, gives you heaps of time to tack or gibe. I find it not much harder to get on foil as my HS1250 to give you some context..

@@ulzi12345 that's a good question! I don't actually know... Are you saying a wedge in the tail wing, or between the mast and board? I would always move the mast further forward as a starting point, but I am not sure about shimming the baseplate.

Thats a good question. The 1125 is almost a new disipline of foiling for me. If I wanna surf and do turns then I will always grab the 1250 or 850. But if I just want to cruise and pump around then I grab the 1125.

Thanks dude! HS1250 is definitly my go to wing for prone surfing, its a great balance of pump and surfability. The HA1125 is for when I want to pump around and link heaps of waves. Its a pretty addictive wing and its certianly cutting into how much time I spend on the 1250!

Tail is one I made myself. It’s similar outline to a 12” KD Maui tail but thinned down to 5.5mm. As for the shim I’m using the 0.5 deg shim on the A+ fuse.

@@steveyew3931 Anytime mate! I find the more shims you add (A+ fuse) the faster and more twitchy it becomes. From a performance aspect this means less drag, and an easier transition rolling from rail to rail. But the cost is that you end up with a higher stall speed so less margin for error. If you want more stability go less shim and it will give you a lower stall speed as well.

It's just a tail I made myself from a sheet for G10. It is a KD Maui replica 12" that is thinned out to 5.5mm thick. Super fast tail wing but still has a really surfy feel

Fair call, I think foilers should always avoid crowded lineups, especially people learning. Most of this lineup is actually other foilers, just hard to tell while they're sitting there. We made sure they were okay with us foiling, most of them just wanted to have a go! Nice to see so much interest from other surfers and keen to try it out.

I've never had anything but positivity from other surfers in the water but I always ask before hand. I understand some surfers are fearful of foils that have never seen them, but usually after 10mins of watching someone glide around way out the back they are just stoked to give it a go haha.

Just my $0.02, there's no point in separating surfers anf foilers. Obviosuly we can ride waves nobody else can and we can stay away from lineups, but there's no reason we can't get in the lineup and be in the mix with surfers. We are often taking off on white wash mush that nobody wants, and pumping so far out the back and riding swell nobody else is using. And occasionally cruising through the lineup. But, if i see someone paddling for a wave, i go the other way or make sure to stay out of the way. Or I will actually call them into a wave and go for it because obviously i can exit or go any direction. I foil with surfers nearly every day and we have no issues. I also surf with them often, but foiling is too good. Also, the waves are so poor that I think surfing is generally a waste of time and ridiculously inefficient.
