Just to clear something up; there absolutely were areas on the front during the war where the trenches were in throwing distance of each other. It happened on the Western front as well as in Gallipoli. There's even accounts from Gallipoli where the Aussies and Turks were trying each other's food and it was reported that the Turks threw the "bully beef" back to the Australians. There's all sorts of oddities in WW1. It's a fascinating war.

This is the western front so it's british and french vs germans. the russians are from the eastern front. Both the germans and british used the vickers machine gun. The trenches in some places could be close enough to throw a grenade, in Vimy Ridge it was 25 meters.(modern example is in Ucraine where their trenches are 50 meters apart.) The truce was unofficial so some parts of the western front continued to fight in christmas day, mostly of the truces was in sections between british and german, and most of them last just the eve others continued during the next day and one section maintained the truce for 5 days. After the truce in both sides many soldiers had to be transfered to other sections because they refused to shoot.
@jclindsay007
@jclindsay007 2 жыл бұрын
a great example of how close the trenches could get is the fact that during the Christmas truce, the Canadian forces fighting lobbed tins of goodies over to the opposing trenches, and when the soldiers in those trenches asked for more, lobbed live grenades in.

While we are adding knowledge in this Thread. The eastern front in WW1 saw in parts sieges and trench warfare but it was generally speaking a much more mobile affair and apart. It was apart from africa, which was more of a sideshow really, probably the most "mobile" front of the war, at least compared to the western front, the balkans&greece or the "italian front"

The German MG 08 is identifiable by the disc shield on the muzzle. The felt caps that the Germans have were standard issue equipment and were much more common than the Pickelhaube in the early stages of the war. You can see differences in trench design between the German trenches and the allied Trenches, with the German trenches being better constructed.

Indeed! Specially if you come to think of the Germany of 1914, Germany had been united for a very short period of time(considering the time that it takes to standardise an entire army), so units from what was different kingdoms still wore different uniforms and had different equipment, not all german soldiers up to that point dressed like Prussians.

Ah, the western front chrismas truce of 1914, what an event. I can highly recomend the Sabaton History channel, for videos related to the historical events each of their songs are based on. 18:51 I think that the truce in atleast 1 sector held on untill the 30th of December. Very much the outlier of them all. A few hours or a day or two tops is what I hear about the most for the sectors that did get one going.

Agreed. The "silence" wasn't about the lacking communication. It refereed to the artillery and mortals being silent and both site stopped shooting at christmas. Imagine not being shot at as something strange and new. The treaty was mostly between british and german troops. Also the french and german really didn't get along before the EU. French and german and it's predecessors were archrival for quite a long time. The troops that participated in the truce were also send to other parts of the trenches because they refused to fight each others. The generals were really not a fan of that.

I've seen a few people mention the early German uniform, but thought I'd point out each of them. The pickelhaube was an obvious sign of the German Army, but as someone mentioned their unit uniforms tended to be their pre-unification state uniforms instead of a single national one. The gray/tan uniform with the flat-ish hat with red lining was of Bavarian origin, I believe, though I may be wrong about that. The other trench consisted of British/general Commonwealth (I believe the Canadians used the same uniform as Britain), French and Scottish: The Brtish/Commonwealth uniform was brown-ish tan. Most likely officers, I think. The Blue and red uniform were French. The bright colours were an absolute joy for the Germans, since they were very easy to spot and gun down. Obviously the French learned quick and they replaced it with a much duller colour later into the war. Finally, the scotts, with the kilts and beret/thin hat things (don't know their name). Only they'd be mad enough to bring bagpipes to a trench.

So about how wars used to be more private affairs, WWI was still a private affair, born from the assassination of duke Ferdinand, heir to the austro-hungarian throne, by serbian nationalist, so just a common reason to start a war even years prior, what made it so different was how much it scaled up, countries weren't as united in terms of alliances as they were by 1914. So while the austro-hungarian empire declared war on serbia because of the assassination (something that would usually have been a conflict just between them) germany joined to aid it's ally, russia to aid serbia (or was attacked first by germany because of it's status as an ally of serbia, anyone can clarify?) then germany against france because they where allies of russia (i might need clarification on this one too, but i read germany invaded france because they would have helped russia so i'm gessing they were allied with the tsar) and then britain joined, the otoman empire, the u.s. italy, just about anyone had a certain allied like relationship with others so from a private affair between two countries it just became a shitshow out of nowhere and ended up becoming the greatest war ever fought by the time and more than the reasons being what made it be an effort of the whole nation's consciousness, it was the sheer extention of the war, how many countries where involved. On the other hand WWII, was about the reasons, the whole nation had to defeat the nazis because of how much they wanted to take away their identity and control them. so to finish up this comment, although WWII and WWII where very similar, they where also fundamentally different, with WWI reasons for war being closer to wars of years prior, as in private affairs (that escalated way out of proportion), rather than to WWII which was more of fighting an ideology, an idea that affected dirrectly on the civilians, the innocent, the weak, and those who were different, be it race, religion or your own beliefs (aside from religion).

Sorry it’s an MG08 which yes is based off not the vickers but an American called hyram maxim who created essentially the first commercial machine gun (belt fed and whilst the Gatling gun was known unfortunately it lacked any sustained fire and was hand cranked vs a more efficient gas operated system which was very reliable, easier to produce and maintain as well as keep up a high enough rate of fire with a much higher ammunition count) also that uniform is a German uniform, using the famed Mauser, after realizing that having a symbol on your head saying IM OVER HERE isn’t the greatest design choice when your life is on the line. The ones in blue are the French using the lebel (which was god awful where the magazine loaded the bullets similarly to that of a shot gun where the tip of a bullet if given enough force can accidentally turn into a mini firing pin setting of a round in the magazine tube.)

Sabaton is a band that I love dearly, not only because I am from the same part of Sweden as them to the extent where my grand mother was actually neighbours with their old base player. But it's one of the few bands that I never stopped listening to ever since I discovered them in my pre-teens. And I think it has to do a lot with the fact that they tell such interesting stories. Like I have always had a taste for history and most of all military history but it wasn't until I heard Sabaton that I really started to think more about ww2 which a lot of their songs are about. And I especially love them because their songs make me actually think about history in different ways other than man power,victories,guns and tactics. This song is such a good example of that because I can't imagine how it would have been to come face to face with the people that have been shooting at you for months and have killed people you consider friends. To just be able to show them the compasion and understanding of how utterly screwed the common soldier pretty much was during WW1. And then after having met those people you have to go back to shooting at them and potentially killing someone you had a conversation with days earlier. Personally I would never have been able to handle that, it would have broken me mentally and I'm sure it did break a lot of soldiers but there wasn't really anything they could do because you can't really just stop fighting because there is no garauntee that the enemy wont shoot you if they spot you. And even then if you don't do what you are supposed to you could most likely be charged with desertion and execution was a possible punishment for that. They seemed to just be in a no win situation. EDIT: Also if you ever do more Sabaton, Please please please do "No Bullets fly" its one of the most amazing stories I have ever heard.

It was not really until 1915/16 that subdued drab colors and steel helmets became mass produced and universally adopted.

At the end of 1914 there have been threnches that been separated by less than 20m apart. This would be in a handgranade reach. That boot, hat and uniform are Austro-Humgarian.

now the Middle Ages and Renaissance were different kind of wars, but considering European soldiers and civilians reacting to being at war with other european countries: the fact that they were fighting against each other pretty much since carl the great died 1200 years ago, because there was no unity, may have made it “easier” to accept the circumstances, even though cultures were very similar.

The distance between the trenches were around 650ft or 200 meters apart at Max with some being close enough that soldiers could talk with another from the other trench by yelling and they would sometimes warn each other of in coming artillery, the grenade being thrown from one trench to another isn't impossible but you would need one hell of an arm to do so

These metal crosses are indeed tank traps. They are simple steel beames weilded together. In Germany they are called "Tschechenigel" which translates to Czeck hedghogs. I think the name stems from the fact that the Germany Army in encountered them the first time during the invasion of Czeckoslowakia prior to WWII. THe concept was then addapted by the Wehrmacht in WWII. Apparently these are an easy and cheap way to block roads for tanks, as they were not able to roll over these. The tracks got damadged or something like that.

Oh, the cap Hannes wears is the German equivalent of a garrison cap, much worn in the field even in the *German War* and the *Franco Prussian* War (1866 and 1870/71 respectively), remember that the whole point of the Pickelhaube is offering protection against sabre blows when receiving a charge, already pretty much a moot point in the face of single shot breech-loaders, much nore so in the face of repeating rifles, quick firing artillery and machine guns -oh and the machine gun is just a maxim pattern MG, in this case it should be the German MG08 but it might as well be something that the Czech production company had laying around, so a Schwarzlose or something of that sort, but really almost all WW1 era heavy machine guns are maxims (except the French ones) and look like, well Maxims, cylindrical water cooling mantle, barrel at the bottom sticking out, boxy mechanics, belt fed. Doesn't change the fact that the forwards trenches here are ... well.. a literal stone throw away, you should be able to clear out a trench with a showering of grenades... oh well, it's *representative* , like the mixed French and British/Scottish infantry. Best regards and a merry Christmas! Raoul G. Kunz

Sabaton is not going to copyright you for playing their music. It seems to be how most people hear about and keep following the band: Reaction videos and people making their own versions of Sabaton's music videos, with Sabaton preforming it, just different video clips from movies, real war movie reels, etc. But that wouldn't stop KZbin moderators copyright claiming it out of spite, because they try to edit what information gets out there by boosting people they agree with, and hampering those they don't. See Louder With Crowder lawsuits against KZbin for more information.

There’s a video by a channel by Yarnhub who inspired by Sabbaton to make one of their videos about the Christmas truce… YarnHub BTW is known for using visual gags to help their viewers visualized the story their talking about… examples include on their video about the White Death(or his Finnish nickname: Magic Shooter) before they mentioned he preformed his act of terrorizing Russians without a scope… he threw his scope away…

Sorry my English is not so good. To the infantry obstacles. These are not made of metal but made of wood. Barbed wire was attached to it. They are only visually similar to anti-tank barriers. And the German troops wore those caps and / or Pikelhauben, later steel helmets. So they are German soldiers. German, English, Scottish and French troops appear in the video. The MG is also not a Vickers but an MG8

No it was the western front in 1914, these were germans one side and briyish/french on the other. Russia was the eastern frony. Apparently they started singing christmas songs , I believe the germans started. Then the british responded by singing on their side. Then I believe that one from each side went into no-mans-mand, and soon the others joined. Then they played football, exchanged food.

Down the Sabaton rabbithole we go! So, in 1914 helmets were not standard issue, thus all the caps and hats. At 1:20 that would be MG08, German. To be fair, in the times of water-cooled MGs, they all look almost the same from quick glance. Vietnamese captions are probably the only ones done(they are done by fans. A lot of songs default to Czech subtitles, as the band is very popular here and fairly few older people speak proper English).

Not only that but many soldiers weren’t actually soldiers and by that I mean that many children would give false names such as arther Kingsley’s when in reality their name was roger smitt who is a sixteen year old boy from Liverpool and not an eighteen year old teenager who lives in Liverpool and so many soldiers weren’t really who they say they were and unfortunately many of them ended up being forgotten if not lost such as say Kingsley’s died at the Somme but the actual person smitt is trapped in a POW camp never to be heard from again. And sometimes many soldiers were forgotten not only by their friends or community but even their own family where some soldiers would return home less than human ie shellshock, PTSD if not half of their face missing whilst the other half has chemical burns and unfortunately unlike today where we have charities and help programs for veterans, there wasn’t any form of support or help, and so after you lose your lower jaw and your last arm, only to be expected to work in the factories like normal, and not only that but the women at home and this isn’t to say this was common but when you say see a ww2 video or photo of say an American with an English woman, she could be someone’s wife if not that then bob the miner who lives next door is up for grabs and again this wasn’t common but it did happen unfortunately and when you’ve been living in hell for six years straight only to find out that your wife, girlfriend or lover has cheated or simply thought that you were dead and has moved on.such as being captured by the Germans only for the British to tell your wife you’re dead and about half a year later when you get out and go home, only to see her with another man.

Merry Christmas to you and yours! The battle was between the Germans and the French/British soldiers. There was no Russian soldiers on the western front as far as I know. (Also the Russians celebrate Christmas in early January due the Orthodox calendar, so they would not have been part of the event). The truce varied in time from place to place. in some places they only recovered bodies, in other it was a few hours and others places had the truce until new years. Sabaton is a Swedish band that writes and sings about Actual historic events, battles, moments of heroism and wars. They will be releasing their 10th studio album on March 4th 2022. Nice thing about them is that their video's never blocked so it's KZbin safe. (except for some Wacken video's that gets blocked by Wacken) If you really want to go down the Sabaton rabbit-hole, I would recommend these: (These are all from the Sabaton Channel, and they never block videos so it's safe to use) [live at Woodstock 2012]: Ghost Division, 40:1 and Uprising [Great Tour Live Videos]: En Livstied I Krig (make sure to turn subtitles on), Red Baron, Swedish Pagans, Primo Victoria, Fields of Verdun, Devil Dogs & Angels Calling [Lyric videos]: Attack of the dead men, The Final Solution, In Flanders Fields, 82nd All the way, Sparta, Shiroyama, Cliffs Of Gallipolli and The lost betallion [Music Video's]: Bismarck, Steel Commanders, Defence of Moscow, Livgardet (make sure to turn subtitles on), Fields of Verdun, Rourke's Drift, Screaming Eagles, Uprising The Future Of Warfare (Building Blocks Video) & Seven Pillars of wisdom [Animated History Video's]: Night Witches and No Bullets Fly (not animated music video's, the animated history/story video's) [Covers]: Kingdom Come [Offical video] and I'm sure people told you but in case, Sabaton have another channel (Sabaton History Channel) where they do a deep dive into the history behind the songs with Indy Nidell.

Sorry, but I simply must correct you on the widespread use of russian Kirzach boots. That came much later, in the 30s, although variations of it were indeed experimented with as early as the end of 19th century. In the end, it was the lack of synthetic leather and rubber that brought Kirza to the fore of Soviet production as cheap and reliable material for boots and some other goods. Also, unlike the Western Front, the Eastern Front was quite active and maneuverable. While there were trenches of course, they were less useful, considering the front was about twice as wide as the Western one - there just was no way to dig one set of continous trenches through all the territory the front went (and there were no Kriegers to do so).

Anti-tank or tank traps doesn't exist in 1914 but wooden parts look like tank traps were used for barb wire. MG is old MG08 (Maxim/Vickers type of machine gun). Uniform are historical accurate. Blue coat and red caps have France infantry, brown uniforms in same trench and barets have British and Scottish troops. German Landwher or newer units have caps but old units or special units have pikehelmet. That is just 1914 in 1916-1918 soldiers was equipped by new steel helmets like British Brodie helmets or German Steilhelm. Literally helmets used in WW2. Russians try made they own truce in Easter 1914 or 1915 on Eastern front but Austro-Hungarian and Russians used different calendar so Russians was just captured by Austria-Hungary soldiers.
