Veterans React To Sabatons..Christmas Truce!!

All the band members play the main parts. Hannes, the Drummer is the guy who gets blown by the granate and climbs out of the trench first. Joakim the singer on the piano. The second out of the trench is Chris Rörland one of the guitarists, the other one Tommy the big guy who brings the guitar. And then there is Pär Sundström, the little long haired guy with the beard. He is the bass player and with Joakim the founder of the band. He and Joakim actually find and research the topic about their songs and mainly write them too. May I suggest another song of them to you. No bullets fly. The video was made with yarn hub. It is amazing just watch it all the way to the end. You should not have stopped this one short either. The end credits were sung by Floor Jansen, who is Hannes Van Dahl's( the drummer) wife and the singer of Nightwish. You missed out on something really beautiful

A fun thing with Joakim, the main vocalist, is that originally he didn't intend to be the main vocalist for the band. In a Q&A, he talked about how he was going to be the keyboardist for the band and was only going to be singing till the band found another vocalist. The band never found another vocalist.

Sabaton has the ability to reach into your soul and push all the right buttons, making you feel sad while also being incredibly proud of the heroism, sacrifice, and honor or groups and individuals caught in the madness of war. Par and Joakim started writing this song in 2016, but felt it was so important they did not want to record it until it was perfect. I think they succeeded. To me, this story (among others Sabaton have done) shows that true Warriors understand that the 'enemy' are people, just like them, and that they are fighting for their homeland, ideals, or beliefs just as they are. BTW, the cross at the end is a replica of the real cross that marks the location of the Christmas Truce outside Ypres, Belgium. Stay safe and Keep rocking.

Sydney base camp of the Aussie chapter here The tune when the song starts is “carol of the bells” played backwards The voice behind the ending credits was sung by Floor Jansen the wife of Hannes ( the drummer) the first soldier out of the trenches. The credits also reveal the 200+ people it took to film the video.

This Xmas truce was not sanctioned by the powers above, it was spontaneous along this area of the front. It was never allowed to happen again which to me is the significance of the piano being blown up at the end.

Thanks guys for a great post! As a 20 year Vietnam Vet, I can testify that this "happening" was a real thing. In fact, there are two memorials to the "Truce" one at Ypres, Belgium and the other in the UK (Liverpool I think). IMO, no better Christmas song from the modern era than this emotional tribute. Super reaction to this song. I am a history buff and am not a big metal fan but this band got my attention. The truce and the pick up soccer games where spontaneous by the lower ranks and the officers on both sides were furious and tried to put a stop to it. The singer (Joakim) , the bass player (Pär) and the drummer (Hannes) is on the german side in the video. Pär is the short guy with the beard and Hannes is the guy that climb out of the trench. In the allied trench is the two gitarrists Chris and Tommy, Chris is the second out of the trenches and Tommy is the one that brings the guitar.

Here is where this story is sad for us as Americans. We didn't get involved in WW1 until the Germans sank the Lusitania, which wasn't until 1915. By then the Christmas Truce had already happened, so we didn't learn much about this story. But one thing about Sabaton is that they don't tell the stories about what happens in war with any slant or bias; they tell the story of how it actually happened. And in this case, they are accurately depicting what happened during Christmas 1914. One side started to sing christmas carols that the other side heard. They then responded in like with another carol. Then as you see, they all started to come out, one by one. They played soccer. They exchanged gifts. What made it the hardest is that after that truce happened (which was completely spontaneous), commanders of various armies started to make rules saying that there will be no more truces like this, with punishment being court martial. So this is the only time it really happened, especially as the soldiers were told that they weren't going to be at war for more than a couple of months. We know this took 4 years. What made this particular truce hard for the soldiers was going back to the battle. They just had a truce and made friends, and a lot of them couldn't bring themselves to killing their friend. Some were pulled off that theater and put onto another, while some were pulled out of the war completely. But this was probably the biggest showing of humanity during any war time between both sides in war. That cross actually exists, in Belgium, not far from the battlefield that the actual truce took place.

This song makes me cry every time. If you like this story, there is a French movie called "Joyeaux Noëlle" that is about this particular Christmas. It is an amalgamation of the various truces that took place across the frontlines but tells it from the perspective of the regular soldiers in the trenches from each side. You will need subtitles as they are accurate in having everyone speak their own language (e.g. the French speak French and the Germans speaks German etc.) It highlights so much of the horror of war as well as this particular miracle that was never allowed to take place again. It is my absolute favorite war movie.

The truce was initiated by the troops in the trenches against the orders of their commanders. Once the truce was over, those that took part were sent to other parts of the front as command was afraid they would not fight against each other.

This one always makes me cry. It really gets me when Per carves 2021 on the cross, because when I first saw this I had recently learned that my country has sent our soldiers to fight abroad every year since the "War to End All Wars" - truly a war that never ends, as the lyrics say. Also "lest we forget" is from a well-remembered poem created for Victoria's jubilee, which instead of glorifying the British Empire offers a reminder that all empires come to dust in the end. Joakim has said that one of their goals is to help us remember history, because otherwise we will keep repeating the same mistakes over and over.

We learned about this short truce in social studies in school. A moment of humanity in the chaos of war. Half the soldiers on both sides were still teenagers. That bit of relief and sanity will have helped many to process the horror I'm sure. Just simple men caught in the web of politics and power struggles.

Yes, he joined Sabaton as keyboardist initially. But they had no singer, so he filled in on vocals. But they never found a vocalist, so he became their vocalist/frontman

The commanders on both sides were outraged. A lot of those involved got carted off to different areas of the frontline, or in the case of the Germans, to a completely different front, to avoid any future "fraternization". The following years, not only were measures taken to avoid such incidents, but too much had happened already in the war as such, too many people had died and too much had been destroyed to really allow for such interaction.

It's written in soldier's diaries from the time that on Christmas eve, on sunset, soldiers from both side heard from the enemies trenches in broken French and German "tomorrow you no shoot we no shoot". There is a scene from the movie Joyeux Noel which depicts this scene and moment in history excellently. You can look up the scene on YT. The actual soldiers from the British and French side had to be reassigned to different parts of the Front as a lot of them refused to fight the Germans in the opposite trenches after what happened.

I love both Sabaton and Home Free! For Christmas songs, I would recommend Do You Hear What I Hear or Full of Cheer by Home Free(actually they have a bunch of holiday-style songs); and I can't say that Sabaton does a lot specifically aimed for the holidays, but I love their song Great War, the live version! Their live videos are absolutely excellent. Especially when they are annoying each other during a show they are true entertainers!

As Åsa wrote, have subtitles on. They won't work in the beginning when Joakim is speaking but he is saying let's sing "En livstid i krig". They work during the song and try to follow along the song with the subtitles and the song will have more meaning to you. They sing about the 30 year war that raged in Europe in the 17th century and lasted 30 years.

Both Christmas Truce and No Bullets Fly always bring emotions to me when listening. Christmas Truce though is a lot heavier of a feeling because the war continued for 4 more years and it’s sad to think that soldiers and officers that participated in the “unofficial” cease fire were ether removed from the front lines and/or court marshaled. High Command on both sides said no more fraternizing with the enemy under no circumstances after hearing about it. It’s sad knowing that people were forced to fight in the grinder for basically nothing for four more years when all they wanted was peace and to be home with their families.

the truce was indeed a magical moment in history. but the commanders in the back of the line were left out of the agreements. The truce was negotiated by frontline officers and to some sectors of the line, even by ordinary soldiers. The sad fact is that when the generals on both sides found out about the truce they were furious. They ordered artillery barrages and snipers to break the truce, court martialed a lot of those that took part in the negotiations of said truce and did everything in their power to prevent it from happening again. They wouldn't and in their minds couldn't allow the chance of their soldiers seeing the other side as fellow humans, cause then they would hesitate to fight. Scary how we put geopolitics over human lives

Fun fact as you were surprised the singer plays piano: Joakim the singer originally was the keyboard player of the band, they didn´t have a singer at the start so they other band members pushed him to sing (him not being a singer and he didn´t like it). Thing is everyone liked his singing so he kind of got stuck with being the lead singer now

Before World War I the French in German lived mingling with each other when the war broke they were split from my family then all so if you notice on the Allied side there's a soldier looking at a picture of his wife and child and writes a letter then you'll notice the last two soldiers is that soldier passing the letter to his his brother-in-law to give to his wife so they were literally shooting at their family💀💀💀

The crazy thing was that it wasn't planned or organized. The troops just heard the singing from the trenches and joined in. Then after time they just left the trenches and joined together for the day. Sharing gifts from home, wine, singing, and playing soccer.

Awesome reaction. Man Sabaton has gone far. I remember i first saw em live like almost 20 years ago. It feels insane how they have managed to just become better every album. BTW even in WW2 did they have small christmas truces. On russian front german frontline units exchanged goods with red army soldiers and had some ceace fires on local fronts. So even such die hard opposites like nationalsocialists and Stalinists could share peace. That was however between soldiers and as we know soldiers even fanatics eventually gets tired of the crawling in bloody guts to make sure the mortars or MG's keep shooting while the commanders sits in a HQ bunker behind the lines. I realise that many may disagree but at the end of the day we all have our opinions and mine is that the soldiers that day were all something we could learn from.

The sad thing is that the brass didn't want a truce. There was so much shuffling around after the truce because of the bond that grew between the soldiers, and from what I heard anyone engaging in a truce again would be met with a court martial. The truce didn't even happen everywhere which is also kind of sad. Check out Sabaton History where they go into the historical detail behind their songs.

Yeah that's based on Carol of The Bells. And yeah the lead singer was originally hired for keyboards, then drafted into vocals. This is an incredible, important song. The fact that Sabaton members are playing opposing soldiers pretty much sums up how they deal with military history without picking sides. And yeah it did in fact happen in several places at Christmas 1914, spontaneously. Wasn't organized at all, just a happy accident. Their commanding officers (the leadership in Europe during WW1 wasn't the greatest) were panicked by this and threatened to court marshal anyone who did it again. Actually after this little truce, a lot of the soldiers morale was fucked. They refused to shoot the germans and the germans refused to shoot at the allies. Apparently it's a lot harder to kill someone after getting to know them.

Yes, all members were the main characters Joakim, the singer, playing piano(and singing, duh) Hannes, the drummer, was the wounded and first out of german trench Chris, guitarist, was the first out of entente trench(playing a british soldier) Tommy, the other guitarist, was the big french guy with playing the solo Pär, the bassist, was the german yelling out for Hannes when he got out of thench

I´m sure someone have pointed this out by now but if not, This peace night was NOT an organized event from any military side, this was something that just happened by the soldiers in the trenches that night. According to historical records it started with both sides started to place candles above the trench so it could be seen and each side started to sing christmas themed songs and sang higher then the other side untill 1 point someone desided to get out of the trenches and was later meet by a guy from the other side and eventually more and more ppl started to join them and they both came to an understanding that this war wasent gonna be desided tonight so for 1 night they got to celebrate christmas, exchange gifts with each other and to take care of there dead on the field. This last part i dont know how true or widespread it was but according to historians the military leadership hade problems getting the fighting to start again as no side wanted to be the 1 that restarted the fighting again to the point that ppl hade to be moved to other parts of the front as they dident wanna fight there new brothers.

If you look at the reality of the situation, both warring parties were Christian and the war was in it's infancy, so this Christmas Truce was bound to happen, and I am glad that it did happen!

A friend of mine was a soldier in the Wehrmacht in WWII. He wasn't a Nazi, in fact he spent time in work camp for resistance to nazis, but in the end even he was drafted. He was stationed at a new place when suddenly in came several Americans with wine and guitar. Everyone was incredibly surprised, but it turned out that the former German troop had befriended the Americans when they were stationed there. No one wanted to fight the other, so instead they met up to trade pictures of family, play card and teach each other songs. Sad to say, my friends officer was one who went by the book and the Americans became prisoners of war. My friend survived the war, spent two year in US concentration camp and then became a pacifist, dedicating his free time to the peace movement where I met him. He's dead now. Still miss him.

Floor jansen is married to the drummer Hannes and Floor sings the ending credits. All is quiet on the Western front is a great book and movie. I've lost family in both Wars. If you get to read Escape from Crete my Grandfather was one of the main soldiers to escape and help others escape his name is Walter Stewart Marshall nick name Stewie. He was part of a Victor's machine gun gunner crew fought many places like Africa and was caught in Italy. Which is where they escaped. After they made it to Turkey which was a neutral country in WW2 they caught up with Allies taken back home to train new soldiers at Burnham military camp neat Christchurch New Zealand, felt guilty while his fellows brothers kept fighting he decided to change his name just to head back over but got shot and had to except retirement from battle. He later got cancer in his stomach after losing half his stomach he later got it again a year after the Operation this time they closed him back up and said we can't help it's spread to his spine and sadly he died over the Westcoast of the south island N.Z. on a cold slab at a place called Blackball.

no it wasn't , and it didn't happen everywhere just in certain areas and most were set up by local units and their officers and even then it had alot to do with taking care of the dead on both sides as bodies had been laying in no man's land for months

The German's started singing first then other side started singing too. After the truce each side would not kill the other and had to be replaced. The Christmas Truce took place in other locations after this one it was forbidden to do so.
