Both Army and Marine Corps vet here. Please be aware that this is NOT a entry level job. What that means is that if you really want this, you will go into the military as an MP. Once there, you will have to prove yourself, then MAYBE get a shot at landing a K9 spot. Remember, though, you will be in competition against people who have been at that unit for a while, so you might never get a spot as a K9 handler. If you have a recruiter, tell you that I'm wrong, then you have them put K9 handler as your MOS in your contract IN WRITING! I promise you that they won't, and will probably try to convice you verbally. I'm not calling all recruiters liars, BUT they have to meet quotas. Make sure you do your due diligence before signing ANYTHING! It's your career. You make the choices. Also, don't let them try to BS you into anything or intimidate you into signing. If you feel that they are being dishonest, then they probably are. If that's the case, shop around and find a recruiter that will be straight with you.

This is true for all branches besides the Army. We offer K9 as its own separate entry level job now. 31K. Do not ask you recruiter to be a military police if you want to be a dog handler. Make sure you stick it out and get 31K as your MOS

Can confirm. My son is currently doing his 31K AIT at LACKLAND. His recruiter really helped him get this MOS. It wasn't available at 1st but as soon as it became available the recruiter was on it for him! I can also tell you it's definitely not puppy playtime. These men, women and dogs are putting in some serious work!!!

Somewhere I found a memorial to a military K9. One of the comments was """I think this is animal cruelty. These dogs give their lives unwillingly"""" I'm old 68 and a civilian but have had shepherds all my life since I was five. These beautiful animals were raised to work. They did a task. The task of standing in front of protecting our troops - thank them and thank God. Right now my latest GSD is at my feet. I call him my covid dog. Because he came to me December of 2020. I live alone. My family has moved to a different State so I'm all he has. It takes a bit for him to be comfortable around others. But that is the breed. My daughter has always had labs. Her house was broken into in the middle of the day and they just sat there and watched the intruder as he broke the window. That will not happen at my house. But at the same point for those who do not understand the difference between aggression and protection, you can come into my house if you're invited. If you are not invited it's best you stand on the sidewalk until you are.

A statement like that comes from someone who doesn’t have military or law enforcement in their family. They take their personal freedom for granted. GSDs, Malinois or any other breeds used by police or military love to be active.& protective. It’s in their DNA. Peeps like those would be in a world of sh*t w/o law enforcement or the military. Give them full benefits the moment they work at health human service like SSI monthly payment , snap , dogs meal on wheel , housing , healthy benefits card , the right to vote 🗳️, electric bill , free internet … when retire SSI to SSA monthly payment n continue all above till death . 12k off Tesla , n many more .. why not ? If migrants n human have it why can’t these type of dogs who protect our country has these type of benefits

Dog handlers will still be around in the army, but it’s going back to how it was before where you have to be a 31B first and then get slotted for dog handling training. Probably won’t be for awhile, but in the next upcoming years 31K will no longer be it’s own Military occupational specialty.

He's right about the promotion because what would one want to get promoted to? You get trained to be a handler and they expect you to stay a handler. There's no leadership position in dog handling. It's just you and the dog, going from company to any other company that needs a dog.
