I was born in Lage. Right in the Center of Detmold , Lemgo , Herford and Bielefeld . So I had you all and a lot of english Friends in the late 70 and 80th. Quiet sad to see you go in the 90th.

You cannot appreciate how much Wolfgang meant to us until you spend sometime in the field on the same rations menu for weeks. A Non-working BV never prevented a vehicle deploying, and Herfie was used as a currency and rewards for good deeds. In Berlin the officers may have gone to the opera but I assure you the troops didn’t 😂

Life was good in BAOR, APART FROM CRASH OUTS. But it was good for the families with everything laid on for you.

One of the most enjoyable training camps in BAOR, was Vogelsang, administered by the Belgium Army. Actually, I learned to swim there at the Olympic size swimming pool, once used by the Third Reich Officers.

Great trip down memory lane. Forwarded to a former BAOR pads brat to watch :-) Tank museum should make a replica of Wolfgangs van and exhibit it permanently in Bovvie. Impressed with your knowledge Dr Peter.

The Q&A session included a question about what happened to the barracks in Dortmund. The ones on the B1 in Gartenstadt (Moore, West Riding and Ubique barracks) were demolished shortly after the withdrawal in the mid-90s. The area now has business office blocks and housing. The NAAFI and Garrison HQ in Suffolk Barracks also went at this time, although the married quarters in this area were all bought by either the Stadtverwaltung or private individuals. Napier Barracks, the former night-fighter airfield in Brakel, survived a few years longer. Part of the airfield was bought by Borussia football club and they built a training centre with several pitches. The Anglo-German Golf Club was also sold to a local group and continues to operate. The Air Defence training domes of RAGTE are used to store the groundsmans' mowers and equipment.. The barracks accomodation area of Napier has been replaced by a housing estate - but the large lion statues that were outside the Officers' Mess were kept and are now on the roundabout at the entrance to the estate. The EOD operation to clear the old airfield before building was massive and very expensive for the developers. I have lots of photos from the period just before the demolition but can't post them here.

On my initial listing I hated it, was out most months on exercise and as listed there as an individual had a lot to learn. But once settling down and getting more Comfortable in the country I enjoyed it, served in Berlin, Detmold and Bielefeld and did Op Banner tours whilst there. I didn’t get to do much sports as was too busy with work but on hindsight probably the best time of my life

Nothing better than a cold tennets lager from the fridge, the charge bag cooler in a chieftain tank.

I dont understand why we didn't get a bfg medal for serving in Germany but the Australians got one,
@12dougreed9 ай бұрын
Yes agreed. A medal for drinking 20 pils eating 10 curry wurst mit pomfrit American, and , Australians get medals in their cornflake packets for breakfast.

Probably for the guys who served in Berlin during the cold War and the guys who served guarding the border. I served there during the BAOR and BFG days however I don't think that merits a medal but probably a clasp on the GSM.

This is just a load of research by people who had nothing to do with it .What about hearing from the poor fellows that spent 2 years out there mainly guarding whilst nearly freezing to death and if in the British zone dealing with some pretty awful "clearing" and helping ungrateful ex enemies build their industries whilst our own were virtually bankrupt and thousands of families at home still without decent housing ?
