Army Men RTS - Custom Units 2023

We hope you enjoyed this little showcase of what we have been working on for the recent past. These units are eventually going to be availible to the open, once we decide that our mod is ready to be released.
If you have any ideas as to what we could create and would like to share them, feel free to comment them under this video and who knows, maybe you will see your idea in the next showcase :D
Do keep two things in mind though. Since this game is over 20 years old, the engine it runs in is also old and thus also very limited and restrictive. From our experience, we are only allowed to make models that reach only a specific number of vertices/faces, otherwise the model file will crash the game upon launch. The second thing is that, even with having access to most of the core aspects of the game, we are still far from able to re-create everything the game has to offer, and this is mainly due to, again, engine limitations, but also the fact that all the models for this game are saved as a .god extension and this extension is irreversibly encrypted in a way, where any known attempt to decrypt and edit the file resulted in it's corruption. We do know how to create said .god files, but we cannot reverse-engineer animations and most other aspects from already existing .god files, and most of our attempts at making working animations have gone haywire (aside from spinning rotors, which work although are a bit janky).
If you put your idea into the comments, we might look at them and tell you whether we will decide to make the idea into a working unit in-game.

yeah i don't know how that would work xd It's a niche idea but probably way too complex to create. Besides, we don't quite understand the bone system and mechanics in order to make working humanoid characters with animations and everything.

Alot of these units are simply proofs of concept and are between some of my earliest creations. I am planning to revamp most, if not all of these units before the final version of the mod releases, to match the original units.

We have thought about creating mechs before, though we don't know how to make walking animations. Well, we know how to animate them, but we dont know how to force the game to recognize them quite yet.

@@amrtsmodders5258 Interesting because the Zero Engine can do mech walkers (I.E. the Atilla and Mauler from BZ2 or the AT walkers from Battlefront classic).

We may have misunderstood what you mean but in any case, you're welcome. In terms of the link, we aren't providing access to these troops yet, as we are planning to release all of our custom-content at once in the form of a modded version of the game. Once we feel like our "Army Men: RTS United Multiverse" mod is in a good enough state, we will release the Alpha to the public!

What will your mod be called? And how long will it be in development?

We are still deciding on what we will call the final result, but for now we are thinking about something like "Army Men: RTS United" or something along those lines. When it comes to how long it'll be in developement, we can't say how long, as we ourselves have no idea. We want the mod to not just be a bunch of new units strewn about everywhere. We're aiming to make new maps, new campaigns, modifications to the interface etc. Once we'll be nearing a viable state of the mod to release it as an Alpha, we will make a video about it :)

Well yeah, it is a mod, we've never stated that the mod will be in the same style as the game. As of right now it's also mainly just a playground for our creativity (or lack there-of at times). The mod will be called a United Multiverse, and a multiverse is not just made of toys. If we'll ever want to make a toy-only mod, we'll make it separate to our main project.

These models are very noob and don't feel like the same style of the rest of the units. Why don't you talk with 3D designers to make better ones?. Make a contest or something like that. A request to the community

Those are quite frankly some of my earliest models. Believe it or not, i can create better models than this, but frankly some of the models i made are as complex as the game allows, because if your model is too complex (has too many vertices/faces/tris), the game crashes upon loading a mission with the unit in it, and we don't know every single aspect of the game and the engine in order to reverse-engineer it and find out why it is that way. If you don't like the models, then that's fine, but even making such "noob" models takes some time and work. I'd suggest you trying it out yourself before judging.

@@amrtsmodders5258 yeah, i know all that, i'm game designer from those times lol. No offense or judging, but still, if you don't know how to make a less complex 3D model for an old videogame... well, you know some 3D design, but not too much. That's what i can see here and in the channel. I talked with RTS designers of those days and if i don't remember well, the max are 1400 vertices or triangles, i don't remember. I can remember how they fight with programmers to make the Heroes a little more complex, like 1600. Again, talk with those guys i told you before. I taught them in the past. They can do this job.
