Confused Reviews - Episode 67 - The Evil Dead 3: Medieval Dead - Army of Darkness (1992)
Army of Darkness is a 1992 American dark fantasy horror comedy film directed, co-written, and co-edited by Sam Raimi. The film is the third installment in the Evil Dead film series and the sequel to Evil Dead II (1987). Starring Bruce Campbell and Embeth Davidtz, it follows Ash Williams (Campbell) as he is trapped in the Middle Ages and battles the undead in his quest to return to the present.
The film was produced as part of a production deal with Universal Pictures after the financial success of Darkman (1990). Filming took place in California in 1991. The makeup and creature effects for the film were handled by two different companies: Tony Gardner and his company Alterian, Inc. were responsible for the makeup effects for Ash and Sheila, while Kurtzman, Nicotero & Berger EFX Group was credited for the remaining special makeup effects characters. Tom Sullivan, who had previously worked on Within the Woods, The Evil Dead, and Evil Dead II, also contributed to the visual effects.
Army of Darkness had its premiere at the Sitges Film Festival on October 9, 1992, and was released in the United States on February 19, 1993. It grossed $21.5 million total over its $11 million budget and received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised Raimi's direction, humor, visuals and Campbell's performance, though criticism was aimed at the lighter tone compared to the previous films.
Despite not being a box office success in the U.S., it became a success on video release and later garnered a cult following from fans of the series, along with the other two films in the trilogy. The film was dedicated to The Evil Dead sales agent and Evil Dead II executive producer Irvin Shapiro, who died before the film's production in 1989.

30 years old! There’s less scares here and more emphasis on within and comedy. It's true many fans were shocked at the tonal flip the film took, and many audiences were confused with Ash’s characterization. A box office bomb but it wasn't a total disaster as Raimi never misses a chance to make things grotesque or fun for that matter. Bruce Campbell is completely embracing the campiness of the series at this point. I’m glad we got the tv show later, video games, a remake and the newest installment coming this April.

My favorite scene in the sequel is when ash finds the book of the dead in the sematary but they are three of the books and it was funny when ash picked two of the fakes. 😀👍

Fun fact: in the original script the scene where Ash meets Arthur and the army was longer and was like in the second movie, Arthur was going to appear after he killed the deaddite and they started saying hail, The Wiseman would say that Ash was the man in the necronomicon and that the man can't bleed, so they cut Ash's hand to see if he really is and he bleeds making them believe that he is a enemy

"Bruce Campbell is the finest man to grace a silver screen." ~Psychostick 3:09 In Japan, it's called "Captain Supermarket." 6:14 "Pimp haaaand!" 9:15 Most of what he says about it isn't true. It's not a Remington. It's an IGA/Stoeger Coach Gun. It has a standard blued finish, Brazilian hardwood stock and forearm, extractors (as opposed to ejectors), a bead sight, and double triggers. Also, he doesn't mention that it's a hammerless boxlock. In ED2, it was a Stevens 311, and he trimmed the barrels down from 28" to about 12". In AoD, the Coach Gun has 20" barrels. 17:18 "Necronomicon ex Mortis" might actually be a compendium of three volumes, like the grimoires in 'The Ninth Gate', which would explain why the one that haunts Ash is called "Noturom Demonto." 18:05 Ackchyually, it's "Klaatu barada nikto." 19:01 Calls him a "damn bleating fool." Back in the '90s, I didn't know what "bleating" meant, so it baffled me for years what he was saying. 22:01 Ackchyually, "decimate" means "to reduce by 1/10th." They do way better than that by the end. More like reducing Deadite numbers TO 1/10th. 23:51 It never made sense to me how Bad Ash ended up with two organic hands since he spawned off of Ash's right side. Would have made perfect sense if he'd spawned off of Ash's left, aka "sinister," side. 25:28 Never buy guns from department stores. They cut deals with manufacturers to skimp on QC to reduce wholesale costs, then they turn around and sell them at full retail price. QC ought not be cut, especially with firearms. Plus, most department stores just aren't adept with firearm maintenance. On the upside, the actual gun you buy usually isn't a display model, but a fresh in-the-box one. 25:40 Back in 1998, I got a job at a Meijer store (Walmart's closest regional competitor here in Indiana which is only one state south of Michigan) while I was going to college. They gave me a choice of two departments, and I chose Housewares just so I could be just like Ash. u///w///u 25:56 Possibly an homage to Chuck Connors in 'The Rifleman', a Western show that Bruce and Sam's (and James Cameron's) generation grew up with. 27:26 Pessimistic, not nihilistic. I know Sam's no good with continuity, by his own admission, but do they expect me to believe that neither Bruce nor Sam knows their left from their right?! 28:20 Oingo Boingo rules! 28:30 Most of them were female. They were acrobats or dancers or some such. Slim and agile. 30:25 Same here. I ended up watching them in reverse order, then figured out how they were supposed to go, then watched them the right way, then ended up loving them even more. I agree with Joe Bob Briggs that Evil Dead 2 is the overall best, hitting all those gonzo notes in just the right way.

Are you going to do a vid on the Evil dead reboot? I remember going to universals Halloween horror nights and they had a haunted house for the reboot and I didn’t think the house was that good, especially considering how awesome the cabin was in the first two movies.
